Amy Howland’s cybersecurity career began in financial auditing, moved through ethical hacking and consulting, and ultimately led to chief information security officer roles. Guidehouse announced her appointment as partner and CISO on October 1, 2024, identifying her as the executive responsible for the company’s corporate cybersecurity strategy and operations.

Who is Amy Howland?

Guidehouse describes Howland as a cybersecurity and information-assurance leader with 25 years of experience. That figure is the company’s description in its October 1, 2024 appointment announcement, not an independently measured industry statistic.

Guidehouse lists her previous CISO positions at Maxar Intelligence, Perspecta and CSRA. Its leadership biography says she has advised commercial and public-sector organizations, including civilian agencies and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Her responsibilities have covered policy, governance, risk, vulnerability management, security operations and compliance, as well as security engineering, insider-threat programs, security operations centers, malware, threat intelligence and cybersecurity architecture.

How did Amy Howland get into cybersecurity?

Howland has said she started as a financial auditor and CPA. Guidehouse’s appointment announcement says she later moved into a security and technology practice. A 2017 CyberScoop profile describes that transition as a progression from accounting toward security work and then ethical hacking.

That route illustrates that cybersecurity is not limited to one academic major or an entry-level security-operations job. Auditing gave Howland experience examining controls and evidence; ethical hacking added a hands-on view of how systems could be attacked; consulting exposed her to different organizations and their security problems.

Her career stages

Stage Primary responsibility What Howland has described
Financial auditor and CPA Reviewing financial processes and controls Her starting point before moving into security and technology
Ethical hacker Finding weaknesses from an attacker’s perspective CyberScoop describes her move into ethical hacking at her firm
Security consultant Advising customers on policies, controls and remediation She told WashingtonExec that this work focused on recommending what clients should do
Internal CISO Implementing and operating security inside one organization At CSRA, she became accountable for carrying out the work she had previously advised customers to undertake
Enterprise security leader Setting strategy and overseeing governance and operations Guidehouse says she leads corporate cybersecurity strategy and operations as CISO

What was the turning point in her career?

In a 2021 WashingtonExec interview, Howland identified “Becoming the CISO at CSRA” as a career turning point. She explained that consulting had involved advising customers on policies and remediation. As CSRA’s internal CISO, she had to implement those controls and accept responsibility for the results inside the organization.

The change was more than a title promotion. Consulting rewards diagnosis, recommendations and influence across clients. An internal CISO must set priorities, secure resources, coordinate teams, manage risk over time and demonstrate that controls work in practice.

Howland’s experience integrating companies and systems

Building the CSRA network

A 2017 CyberScoop profile describes Howland as CSRA’s CISO during the creation of a new network after two legacy organizations came together. The challenge was to establish a workable security environment while combining inherited technologies, processes and teams.

Integrating Perspecta

Howland later discussed integrating disparate systems and cultures into a Perspecta network. In the WashingtonExec interview, she presented that effort as a team accomplishment rather than an individual achievement.

These accounts show why mergers and acquisitions are a security problem as well as an information-technology project. Leaders must reconcile different identity systems, network designs, policies, risk assumptions and organizational habits without losing visibility or interrupting essential work.

What does Howland’s leadership scope include?

Guidehouse’s biography places her work across the full security lifecycle:

  • Governance and policy: setting expectations and accountability for security decisions.
  • Risk and compliance: evaluating exposure, meeting obligations and documenting controls.
  • Vulnerability management: identifying weaknesses and coordinating remediation.
  • Security operations: running monitoring and response capabilities, including security operations centers.
  • Threat-focused functions: supporting insider-threat programs, malware analysis and threat intelligence.
  • Architecture and engineering: designing and implementing technical safeguards, including cloud security.

Guidehouse’s appointment announcement says her remit includes compliance, cloud, integration, vulnerability management, threat intelligence and risk management. Her background therefore spans both technical disciplines and the executive work of deciding which risks an organization will address first.

What advice does Amy Howland give women considering technology careers?

Howland’s public advice is exploratory rather than prescriptive. In the March 16, 2017 CyberScoop interview, she said, “Find what interests you and investigate it more.” She also told women considering technology careers, “There are no limits.”

Her comments reflect the breadth of cybersecurity itself. Someone interested in investigation might explore threat intelligence or ethical hacking; a person drawn to systems may prefer security engineering or architecture; others may find a fit in governance, compliance, risk or program leadership. Howland’s own path—from audit to hands-on security, consulting and executive accountability—supports the idea that careers can develop across several of those categories.

Why her career path matters

Howland’s experience connects financial controls, offensive security, consulting and enterprise leadership. It also demonstrates the difference between knowing what an organization should do and being responsible for making it happen. Her work integrating companies shows another executive reality: security leaders must align technology, processes and people during periods of major change.

Guidehouse’s October 1, 2024 announcement identifies Howland as its CISO. Earlier titles at CSRA, Perspecta and Maxar Intelligence describe previous stages of her career and should not be treated as her current position.
