There is no single best mobile-hotspot plan in 2026. Choose by device type, high-speed data requirement, location and post-cap policy. For phone tethering, US Mobile advertises Unlimited Premium at $44 per month with unlimited hotspot, subject to verification of its current terms. For a dedicated hotspot, T-Mobile’s prepaid 50GB plan is the clearest $50 option, AT&T’s annual 20GB plan has the lowest effective monthly price for buyers willing to prepay, and Verizon’s 100GB and 150GB plans offer the largest reviewed dedicated-device allowances.
Prices and plan details below reflect U.S. offers observed August 16–18, 2026. Taxes, device availability, coverage, eligibility and carrier policies can change.
Quick picks
| Best for | Plan | Advertised price and data | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone-based hotspot | US Mobile Unlimited Premium | $44/month; unlimited hotspot advertised | Provider claim; verify speed, priority and network-specific terms |
| Dedicated 50GB hotspot | T-Mobile Prepaid 50GB | $50/month; 50GB high-speed | Continues at 128 Kbps after allowance; $25 connection charge and taxes may apply |
| Lowest effective dedicated price | AT&T Prepaid annual 20GB | $300 paid upfront, equivalent to $25/month | 12-month commitment; not a normal month-to-month price |
| Dedicated 100GB | Verizon Prepaid 100GB | $80/month | $50 is an additional-line price with the $30 multiline discount, not a first-line price |
| Dedicated 150GB | Verizon Prepaid 150GB | $100/month | $70 applies only with a qualifying additional-line discount |
| Light use | T-Mobile Prepaid 10GB | $30/month | Data continues at 128 Kbps after 10GB |
| Stationary household service | Eligible 5G home internet | Varies by address | Not portable; availability and capacity are address-specific |
These are use-case recommendations, not laboratory performance rankings. A cheaper plan on the strongest network at your address can be better than a larger allowance on a congested network.
What counts as a mobile-hotspot plan?
Phone tethering
Your phone plan shares its cellular connection with a laptop or other device. It is convenient for occasional use, but tethering can drain and heat the phone, and the hotspot allowance may be much smaller than the phone’s on-device data.

Dedicated hotspot or router service
A separate cellular hotspot or router has its own line and data allowance. Verizon describes Jetpack and MiFi products as dedicated devices that share a cellular connection over Wi-Fi: Verizon hotspot devices and plans. Dedicated hardware is preferable for several devices, long work sessions, Ethernet connections or keeping your phone available.
Tablet, data-only and home-internet plans
A tablet line may not be permitted in a dedicated hotspot. Fixed-wireless home internet is designed for one address and sustained household use, while business and government broadband can have different eligibility and priority rules. Confirm that the plan explicitly supports your device category and IMEI before purchasing hardware.
Best dedicated mobile-hotspot plans
Verizon Prepaid: best for 100GB to 150GB on Verizon
Verizon lists 5GB for $40, 25GB for $60, 100GB for $80 and 150GB for $100 per month on its prepaid data-only page: Verizon Prepaid data-only plans. A $30 discount applies to each additional Verizon Prepaid hotspot or router line. The first line can be a phone, tablet, hotspot or router; hotspot/router lines do not qualify for Verizon Auto Pay or Loyalty discounts, and taxes and fees may apply.
5G Ultra Wideband requires a compatible device and coverage. Verizon lists up to 4K UHD streaming on capable devices over 5G Ultra Wideband, while connected-device video on 5G/4G LTE is listed up to 720p. Eligible connected-device plans may receive a 5GB Data Boost after the included allowance is exhausted: Verizon hotspot overview.

Best fit: users needing 100GB or 150GB and Verizon is reliable at their locations. Drawback: the attractive $50 and $70 figures are multiline prices, not ordinary single-line prices.
AT&T Prepaid: best annual value and a straightforward 100GB tier
AT&T lists 20GB for $300 paid 12 months in advance (an effective $25 per month), 15GB for $35 per month, 50GB for $55 and 100GB for $90. A 5GB add-on costs $10 per month. Taxes and fees are extra, and 5G requires a compatible plan and device: AT&T prepaid data-only support and AT&T prepaid hotspot and tablet plans.
Best fit: predictable moderate use, especially when AT&T coverage is strongest and you can prepay. Drawback: the $25 figure requires $300 upfront, and the reviewed material does not establish normal-speed service after the allowance.
T-Mobile Prepaid: clearest 10GB–50GB ladder
T-Mobile lists 5GB for $20, 10GB for $30, 30GB for $40 and 50GB for $50. After the high-speed allowance, data continues at 128 Kbps. A $25 device connection charge applies per line, taxes vary by location and no early-termination fee is listed: T-Mobile Prepaid internet plans.

T-Mobile discloses typical 5G download speeds of 144–561 Mbps and upload speeds of 6–34 Mbps. Those are provider disclosure ranges, not guaranteed speeds at your address.
Best fit: a dedicated device needing up to 50GB of high-speed data. Drawback: 128 Kbps is generally inadequate for video meetings, streaming, cloud synchronization and software updates.
Phone plans that include hotspot data
US Mobile Unlimited Premium
US Mobile’s August 2026 comparison says Unlimited Starter costs $25 per month with 20GB of hotspot data, while Unlimited Premium costs $44 and includes unlimited hotspot; both can use a choice of three nationwide networks. These are carrier-advertised terms, not independent tests. Check the live plan page for hotspot speed, priority data, taxes, device eligibility and network-specific restrictions before enrolling: US Mobile unlimited-plan comparison and US Mobile plans.
This category is suitable when you also need voice and text. It is not automatically suitable for a carrier-approved standalone hotspot, and “unlimited” does not by itself prove uncapped full-speed tethering.

Premium postpaid phone plans
Verizon’s Unlimited Ultimate and some T-Mobile premium plans include substantial high-speed hotspot allowances, according to secondary comparison coverage: Tom’s Guide unlimited-plan comparison. Their headline prices generally include a phone line and may depend on autopay, multiple lines or premium-plan enrollment. Do not compare a phone plan’s full price directly with a data-only line without valuing the included voice, text and phone benefits.
How much data do you need?
| Monthly use | Typical activities | Plans to examine |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5GB | Email, messaging, navigation and occasional laptop work | Verizon 5GB ($40) or T-Mobile 5GB ($20), subject to coverage |
| 10–30GB | Remote work, video calls, browsing and occasional streaming | T-Mobile 10GB/$30 or 30GB/$40; AT&T 15GB/$35 |
| 50–100GB | Frequent laptop work, streaming and several devices | T-Mobile 50GB/$50; AT&T 50GB/$55 or 100GB/$90; Verizon 100GB/$80 |
| 100GB-plus | Full-time remote work, RV living, live streaming, household backup | Verizon 150GB/$100 or fixed-wireless home internet where available |
Video meetings, operating-system updates, cloud sync, photo backups and high-resolution streaming can consume data far faster than ordinary web pages. Track a full billing cycle rather than estimating from browsing alone.
How to compare usable speed
- High-speed allowance: gigabytes available before a threshold.
- Post-cap rate: T-Mobile’s reviewed data-only plans continue at 128 Kbps, which is service technically continuing but not a practical replacement for full-speed data.
- Deprioritization: a prepaid or MVNO line may slow during congestion even before its allowance is consumed.
- Hotspot-specific caps: on-device unlimited data may coexist with a smaller or slower tethering allowance.
- Video limits: resolution policies can matter more than headline speed when streaming.
Ask whether “unlimited” means uncapped full-speed hotspot data, a fixed high-speed bucket, a speed-limited continuation or merely unlimited on-device use. Providers may also restrict excessive or abusive use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the network for your actual locations
- Enter your home, work, regular travel routes, campgrounds and likely event venues into each carrier’s coverage map.
- Check indoor signal, LTE versus 5G availability and the bands supported by the proposed hotspot.
- Test during the hours you need service; congestion can change results at a stadium, fairground, campground or rural site.
- Confirm the return window, cancellation terms and whether a device-financing obligation survives service cancellation.
No national ranking can replace an address-level check. Verizon may win at one address while T-Mobile or AT&T wins at another.

Prepaid, annual and postpaid costs
Compare the first month, not just the advertised recurring rate. Include the service charge, device purchase or financing, activation or connection fee, SIM, taxes, shipping, add-ons and any annual prepayment. T-Mobile’s $25 device connection charge and AT&T’s $300 annual payment materially change the cash required at signup.
Prepaid generally avoids a credit check and long service contract, but can offer fewer support and financing options. Postpaid may provide higher priority or device financing while requiring credit approval, autopay or multiple lines. A “no contract” label does not erase a financed-device obligation.
Buying the hotspot hardware
- Carrier-supplied device: simplest activation and compatibility path, but often tied to that carrier.
- Unlocked 5G hotspot: flexible, provided its modem bands, IMEI and SIM/eSIM are accepted by the plan.
- LTE hotspot: can reduce hardware cost for light use, but lacks 5G capacity.
- 5G router: best for multiple users, Ethernet, external antennas or semi-permanent installation.
- Practical checks: Wi-Fi generation, supported devices, battery life, USB tethering, Ethernet, antenna ports, firmware updates and thermal performance.
A premium modem cannot overcome weak coverage or a low-speed plan. Independent buying guidance also emphasizes the separate-device advantage when a phone plan lacks sufficient hotspot data or must serve several devices for long periods: Tom’s Guide mobile-hotspot roundup.
Mobile hotspot versus 5G home internet
Choose a hotspot when you need portability, travel connectivity or emergency backup. Choose fixed 5G home internet when service is primarily at one address and several household users will consume data continuously. Home service depends on address eligibility and network capacity, but can be better value than repeatedly buying large portable allowances.
Quick Recap
Security and reliability checklist
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 with a unique, strong Wi-Fi password.
- Install hotspot firmware updates and disable public or guest access you do not need.
- Place the device where cellular signal is strongest and keep it ventilated.
- Use a VPN and device-management controls for sensitive business work.
- Keep a second carrier or offline workflow if the connection is mission-critical.
Final verdict by reader profile
- Occasional laptop user: choose the lowest sufficient tier on the network that works at home and on your routes; T-Mobile 10GB is a transparent starting point.
- Dedicated-device user needing about 50GB: T-Mobile Prepaid 50GB is the clearest reviewed value, provided 128 Kbps post-cap service is acceptable.
- Annual-value buyer: AT&T’s 20GB plan costs $300 upfront for a $25 monthly equivalent.
- 100GB–150GB user: compare Verizon’s $80/$100 single-line prices with AT&T’s $90 100GB offer, using coverage and taxes to decide.
- Phone-plus-hotspot buyer: US Mobile’s advertised $44 Unlimited Premium is worth checking against live terms, but do not treat the provider’s claim as an independent performance test.
- Stationary household or full-time backup: price eligible 5G home internet before committing to a portable hotspot allowance.
