Turnover can help identify liquid markets, but your decision should also account for spread, volatility, overnight financing, leverage, event risk and your broker’s execution quality.
The latest global benchmark is the BIS 2025 Triennial Central Bank Survey, based on average daily over-the-counter foreign-exchange turnover in April 2025. It recorded approximately $9.6 trillion in daily FX turnover. That figure includes spot transactions, forwards, swaps, options and other institutional OTC products—not just the retail spot trades available in a trading app.
The top forex currency pairs by global turnover
According to the BIS 2025 survey, every one of the ten most-traded currency pairs involved the US dollar. The dollar was on one side of 89.2% of all FX trades, followed by the euro at 28.9% and the Japanese yen at 16.8%. Currency shares add up to 200% because every transaction involves two currencies.
| Pair | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| EUR/USD | The largest individual currency pair by global turnover. It is widely followed and usually has deep institutional liquidity. |
| USD/JPY | The second-largest pair. It is particularly sensitive to differences between US and Japanese interest rates and central-bank policy. |
| USD/CNY | The third-largest pair in the 2025 survey, overtaking USD/GBP. Its share of global turnover rose to 8.1%, from 6.6% in 2022. |
| USD/GBP or GBP/USD | Still one of the largest dollar pairs, although it was overtaken by USD/CNY in the latest BIS ranking. |
| USD/CAD | A heavily traded dollar pair linked partly to Canadian economic conditions and commodity markets, especially energy. |
| USD/AUD or AUD/USD | A liquid dollar pair that can be influenced by Australian commodities, Chinese demand and broader risk sentiment. |
| USD/CHF | A major dollar pair associated with Swiss monetary policy and periods of demand for perceived safe-haven currencies. Its share rose to 4.9% in 2025. |
| USD/HKD | A significant Asian-market dollar pair. Its share rose to 3.6% in 2025, from 2.4% in 2022. |
| USD/SGD | An important Asian dollar pair, though less traded globally than the leading major pairs. |
| USD/MXN | One of the most prominent US-dollar/emerging-market pairs available to many retail traders. |
A frequently repeated ranking needs updating: GBP/USD is no longer the third-largest pair by global turnover in the latest BIS data. USD/CNY moved into third place. The BIS reported that USD/CNY turnover increased 59% between 2022 and 2025, while USD/CHF increased 60% and USD/HKD increased 95%.

Majors, minors and exotics
“Major,” “minor” and “exotic” are common broker and trader labels, not universal classifications established by one global authority.
- Majors: generally the most liquid US-dollar pairs, including EUR/USD, USD/JPY, GBP/USD, USD/CHF, USD/CAD, AUD/USD and NZD/USD.
- Minors or crosses: pairs without the US dollar, such as EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY.
- Exotics: pairs combining a major currency with an emerging-market currency, such as USD/TRY, USD/ZAR or USD/BRL.
Broker product lists, spreads, margin schedules and trading hours can differ. A pair called a “major” by one broker may not receive the same pricing or margin treatment at another.
How to choose a pair
1. Use turnover as a starting point, not a recommendation
High turnover often means a deeper institutional market, which can make a pair a practical starting point. It does not guarantee a narrow spread or good execution on your account. Retail forex is generally traded over the counter: your broker or dealer may be your counterparty, rather than routing your order to a single centralized exchange. The CFTC explains key features of retail forex trading.
Pricing can change according to the broker, account type, time of day, market conditions and order size. Compare the actual spread on the platform during the hours when you intend to trade—not only the minimum spread shown in an advertisement.

“Commission-free” does not mean cost-free. A dealer may recover its compensation through the bid-ask spread, a separate commission, an overnight financing charge or a combination of these. See Investor.gov’s overview of foreign-currency trading.
| Cost or condition | What to check |
|---|---|
| Bid-ask spread | Compare the normal and stressed spread, not just the advertised minimum. |
| Commission | Find out whether it is charged per side or per completed trade. |
| Overnight financing | Check swap rates for long and short positions, including any three-day financing adjustment. |
| Slippage | Review how far market and stop orders can move from the requested price. |
| Currency conversion | Look for charges when account currency and settlement currency differ. |
| Minimum position size | Check the smallest trade size the broker permits for the pair. |
| Margin requirement | Confirm the percentage required for the specific pair and position size. |
| Guaranteed stops | Check whether they are available, what restrictions apply and whether they carry a fee. |
3. Match volatility to your risk limit
Liquidity and volatility are different. A pair can be heavily traded and still make large, rapid moves around an interest-rate decision, inflation report, employment release or political announcement.

Before trading, identify the economic calendars relevant to both currencies. A trader who cannot tolerate a sharp move during a central-bank announcement may be better served by reducing position size, avoiding the release or using a different strategy. A high-turnover ranking does not tell you whether a pair suits your time horizon.
4. Look for overlapping exposure
Several trades are not necessarily several independent bets. Buying EUR/USD and GBP/USD in the same direction, for example, can leave you with a broadly similar view that the dollar will weaken. Multiple yen pairs can concentrate exposure to the same yen move. Positions in AUD/USD and NZD/USD may also respond similarly to broad risk sentiment.
Review your combined exposure by currency, not only by the number of open trades.
Practical forex trading tips
Set the loss limit before calculating the position
Do not begin with the maximum position your broker permits. Start with the amount you are prepared to lose if the stop is reached, then calculate the position from the stop distance and pip value.
For example, assume:
- Account equity: $10,000
- Maximum planned loss: 1%, or $100
- Stop distance: 50 pips
- Approximate EUR/USD value: $10 per pip for one standard lot
The approximate position size is:
$100 ÷ (50 pips × $10) = 0.20 standard lots
That example is illustrative. Pip value varies by pair, quote currency, position size and exchange rate, so use the broker’s contract specification or position-size calculator. The stop should reflect the strategy’s invalidation point, not be moved arbitrarily close merely to permit a larger trade.
Understand the quote direction
In EUR/USD, EUR is the base currency and USD is the quote currency:
Rank #3
- Buying EUR/USD means buying euros and selling dollars.
- Selling EUR/USD means selling euros and buying dollars.
- If EUR/USD rises, the euro has gained value relative to the dollar.
Symbol conventions can differ for CFDs, futures and synthetic products. Read the contract specification before placing an order.
Do not treat a stop-loss as a guaranteed price
A conventional stop order can be triggered during a fast market, but the eventual fill may be materially worse than the stop level. Slippage can occur during news, thin liquidity, sudden price gaps or platform interruptions. A guaranteed-stop product, where offered, is a different instrument and may involve a fee, limited availability or restrictions on the trade.
Test the strategy under poor conditions
A backtest or demo account may not reproduce wider spreads, slippage, rejected orders, margin liquidation, overnight financing, weekend gaps or data-feed interruptions. Automated systems can also misread parameters or data and submit trades faster than a person can review them.
Before committing real money, test what happens when:
- The spread becomes several times wider than normal.
- The stop fills beyond its requested level.
- The account approaches its margin closeout threshold.
- The market is closed overnight and reopens at a different price.
- The platform or internet connection becomes unavailable.
Leverage and margin: US retail rules
For US retail OTC forex, NFA Rule 12 requires minimum security deposits of 2% of notional value for transactions involving the British pound, Swiss franc, Canadian dollar, Japanese yen, euro, Australian dollar, New Zealand dollar, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone or Danish krone. That corresponds approximately to maximum leverage of 50:1 before broker-specific restrictions.
For other transactions, the minimum deposit is 5%, corresponding approximately to 20:1 leverage. The NFA Executive Committee can increase requirements temporarily under extraordinary market conditions. Requirements outside the United States can differ substantially.
Rank #4
Leverage magnifies both gains and losses; it does not improve a strategy’s underlying probability of success. A small margin deposit can control a much larger position, so a relatively small adverse price move can consume the deposit quickly. Depending on the account agreement and applicable protections, losses may exceed the initial amount deposited.
How to check a forex broker
US customers can use the CFTC’s registration guidance and the NFA BASIC database before depositing money. Search for the firm and relevant individuals, then compare the result with the name, website and contact details shown by the broker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Verify the firm’s registration status.
- Review its disciplinary and regulatory history.
- Confirm its physical address and telephone contact.
- Read the required customer disclosures and profitability information.
- Read withdrawal rules, funding methods and account terms.
- Confirm the offered leverage is consistent with applicable US limits.
Registration is not a guarantee against loss or fraud. However, an alleged US retail forex dealer that cannot be found in the appropriate regulatory database is a serious warning sign.
Warning signs to take seriously
- Guaranteed profits or unusually large short-term returns
- Requests to move the conversation to a private messaging app
- Withdrawal demands for extra taxes, fees or deposits
- Crypto-only funding
- Leverage above US legal limits offered to US retail customers
- No verifiable headquarters or reliable telephone number
- An unregistered offshore dealer targeting local customers
What the BIS numbers do—and do not—measure
The 2025 survey is a measure of global OTC FX activity, not a league table of retail brokers or retail traders. In April 2025, FX swaps were the largest instrument at approximately $4 trillion in average daily turnover. Spot transactions represented about 31% of total turnover, outright forwards about 19% and options about 7%.
The United Kingdom, United States, Singapore and Hong Kong SAR together accounted for 75% of trading by sales-desk location. These figures describe the institutional market and should not be interpreted as the percentage of retail accounts using each product.

Is GBP/USD the third-most-traded forex pair?
Not according to the latest BIS survey. USD/CNY overtook USD/GBP in the 2025 data, making USD/CNY the third-largest pair by global turnover.
Are major forex pairs safer?
They may offer deeper liquidity and, at some times, lower spreads, but they are not automatically safer. Leverage, volatility, event risk and position size determine how much you can lose.
How many forex pairs should a beginner trade?
There is no universal number. Focusing on one or two pairs can make it easier to learn their spreads, trading hours, economic drivers and recurring event risks. Adding pairs does not necessarily diversify the account if they share the same currency exposure.
What is the cheapest forex pair to trade?
There is no permanently cheapest pair. The effective cost depends on the broker’s spread, commission, financing, slippage, account currency and market conditions. Compare live or historical all-in costs during your intended trading hours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I lose more than I deposit in forex?
Depending on the account agreement, product and applicable protections, losses can exceed the initial deposit. Review the broker’s risk disclosures and margin-closeout terms before trading.
Is forex traded on one central exchange?
No. The global forex market is decentralized and primarily over the counter. A retail customer commonly trades through a dealer’s platform, and that dealer may be the customer’s counterparty.
The Bottom Line
EUR/USD and USD/JPY remain leading choices by global turnover, while USD/CNY is now the third-largest pair in the latest BIS benchmark. But turnover is only a starting point. Choose a pair by comparing its real spread and total costs, understanding its volatility and event calendar, limiting overlapping currency exposure and sizing the position from a predefined loss—not from the leverage available.
Before funding an account, verify the broker through the relevant regulator, read the withdrawal and margin terms and test execution in conditions that include slippage and wider spreads. Forex can provide flexibility, but leverage and OTC execution make risk control more important than a popularity ranking.
