Top Flight-Booking Mistakes That Can Cost You Money—and How to Avoid Them

A low airfare can hide baggage costs, risky transfers, or restrictive terms. Compare the full trip and verify who handles changes before you book.

The cheapest flight is the one that fits your trip at the lowest realistic total cost—not necessarily the lowest fare shown in search results. Before booking, check baggage and other fees, dates and airports, transfer risks, fare rules, and who will handle changes or refunds. Prices and protections vary by itinerary and country, so verify the final checkout details and terms that apply to your ticket.

Compare the total trip cost, not just the fare

A low displayed fare may exclude checked baggage, a carry-on, seat selection, or other optional services. Add the services you actually need before comparing flights; a fare that looks cheaper at first can cost more once those items are included. The U.S. Department of Transportation explains what airlines must disclose and how optional services are handled in its ticket-buying guidance.

Check the baggage allowance and fee for each flight on your itinerary, rather than assuming one airline’s rules apply to another. DOT says airlines cannot preselect optional services such as baggage fees and require passengers to opt out; passengers must affirmatively agree to pay. That does not mean the service is included at no charge. If you plan to use an airline-sized carry-on suitcase, confirm the specific airline’s current size and weight limits and whether your fare permits it.

Use date and price tools without treating them as promises

Flexible-date views, airport alternatives, price graphs, and price tracking can help you compare options for your specific trip. They do not establish that a particular weekday or booking lead time will always produce the lowest fare. Google says its flight-price predictions use historical price trends, and cautions that “there is always a chance that future prices will not behave as we expect.” See Google Flights’ fare guidance.

Use those tools to identify fares that fit your budget and schedule, then decide based on the price currently offered and the consequences of waiting. A prediction is not a guarantee of a future drop. Google reported in August 2022 that U.S. searches for “cheapest airline tickets” had surged by more than 240% from April to August 2022; that figure describes historical search activity, not airfare savings or a current trend. Google’s 2022 account also recorded “when is the best time to book a flight?” as a popular air-travel query.

Check the itinerary for self-transfers and separate tickets

A result with separate tickets or a self-transfer can require you to collect checked baggage, leave the transit area, and check in again. If the first flight is delayed, you may miss the separately ticketed onward flight, and the next carrier may not be responsible for getting you to your destination. An airport change can add another transfer and its associated time and cost.

Before choosing one of these itineraries, compare the apparent fare saving with the transfer time, baggage handling, extra transport, change costs, and what happens if a delay disrupts the connection. Google describes these risks in its ticket and transfer guidance.

Compare the seller’s terms as well as the flight

Flight-search results may link to the airline or to an online travel agency (OTA), sometimes with different prices for what appears to be the same itinerary. Compare the exact flights and the final checkout total, then identify who is selling the ticket and which terms govern changes, cancellations, refunds, and fees. An OTA may impose additional fees on a change or refund request; that does not mean every agency booking is unsafe or that booking directly is always cheaper. Google explains that both airline rules and an agent’s additional terms can matter in its booking terms.

Make a side-by-side comparison using the details that affect your trip:

  • Total price: The fare plus the baggage and optional services you need.
  • Schedule and airports: Departure and arrival times, journey duration, and whether a transfer uses another airport.
  • Flexibility: The applicable change and cancellation conditions and any fees.
  • Connection structure: Whether the flights are a protected connection or separate tickets requiring a self-transfer.
  • Seller and support: Who issues the ticket, which terms apply, and whom to contact if something changes.

Know the limits of the U.S. 24-hour booking rule

For a ticket bought from an airline at least seven days before its scheduled departure, U.S. rules require the airline to offer either cancellation for a full refund within 24 hours or an unpaid 24-hour hold. The airline does not have to offer both options. This requirement does not apply to tickets booked through travel agents or OTAs, and it does not create a general right to change a ticket for free, such as to correct a misspelled name. Check the U.S. DOT’s ticket guidance and refund guidance for the relevant conditions.

These are U.S.-specific protections, not a worldwide rule. For travel elsewhere, check the aviation regulator and booking terms that apply to your country and ticket.

Verify the confirmation after checkout

Once payment is complete, review the confirmation while there is still time to address an error. Confirm the passenger names, dates, airports, flight numbers, baggage allowance, fare conditions, and seller contact details. Keep the confirmation and the terms shown at purchase. For a change or cancellation, contact the airline or OTA that handles the booking; Google directs customers to the relevant seller and explains that airline and agent conditions govern in its cancellation help and booking terms.
