For a first shortlist, consider SAP, Oracle and Microsoft for broad enterprise requirements; add Infor or Workday where their fit merits evaluation. Mid-sized organizations commonly compare Oracle NetSuite, Acumatica, Epicor, Sage Intacct and IFS. Smaller organizations may also look at Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, SAP Business One and Odoo. These are starting points, not rankings or rules based on company size alone.
Which ERP vendors belong on your shortlist?
Independent vendor guides updated in 2026 place these products in broad size-based groups, but neither establishes a neutral best-to-worst ranking. Treat “top” as “worth evaluating for your requirements.” A company’s process complexity, industry, locations, entities, deployment constraints and implementation capacity matter at least as much as headcount or revenue. The ERP Research vendor guide offers one segmentation; a CIOPages buyer guide updated in June 2026 provides a broader comparison set.
| Starting point | Vendors and products to consider | How to use the list |
|---|---|---|
| Broad enterprise requirements | SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Infor and Workday | Compare specific products and deployment models; vendor names alone do not define scope. |
| Many mid-market evaluations | Oracle NetSuite, Acumatica, Epicor, Sage Intacct and IFS | Use as candidates, then test industry workflows, entity needs and functional scope. |
| Smaller-organization evaluations | Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, SAP Business One and Odoo | Validate modules, editions, hosting, localization and support against the organization’s needs. |
The groups reflect editorial guidance in the 2026 ERP Research guide, not a requirement that a business of a given size choose a particular system.
What each vendor’s product family means
SAP
SAP positions S/4HANA Cloud as cross-functional ERP spanning areas such as finance, supply chain, HR and sales, and describes public- and private-cloud options. SAP Business One is another product to consider in smaller-business evaluations. Check the particular product and deployment against your requirements rather than assuming the portfolio is one system. SAP’s S/4HANA Cloud product page describes its current scope and deployment options.

Oracle
Oracle’s portfolio includes Fusion Cloud ERP and NetSuite, as well as established on-premises product families such as E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft and JD Edwards. NetSuite is often considered in mid-market shortlists, but Oracle’s products are not interchangeable deployments. Identify the exact product, edition and operating model under consideration. Oracle’s applications catalogue lists cloud and on-premises product families.
Microsoft
Dynamics 365 is a family of applications, not one monolithic ERP license. Microsoft lists Finance, Supply Chain Management, Project Operations, Human Resources, Commerce and Business Central among its offerings. It describes Business Central as aimed at small and midsize businesses; confirm whether its scope covers the processes you need or whether other products are relevant. See Microsoft’s ERP overview.
Rank #2
Infor, Workday, Acumatica, Epicor, Sage, IFS and Odoo
These vendors appear in contemporary ERP comparison guides, but a broad vendor list alone does not establish that a specific product is right for a particular industry or workflow. Ask for product-specific documentation and demonstrations. For Odoo in particular, confirm edition, hosting, module coverage, localization and support before treating it as a fit. Vendor guides can help identify candidates; they are not substitutes for validating current product capabilities.
How to compare ERP vendors for your business
Build the shortlist around the work the system must support. Ask each vendor and implementation partner to respond to the same requirements and demonstrate the same scenarios.

- Map your organization. Document business units, subsidiaries, legal entities, locations, currencies, consolidation needs and process complexity. Company size is only a rough first filter.
- Specify industry and operational workflows. List requirements for manufacturing, distribution, projects and services, retail or other operations. Ask vendors to demonstrate your actual scenarios, including exceptions and approvals.
- Define functional scope. Decide whether the project includes finance, procurement, inventory, supply chain, manufacturing, projects, HR, commerce, analytics or planning. Products and licensed modules differ; Microsoft’s product family, for example, separates several of these capabilities.
- Set deployment and architecture constraints. Document public-cloud, private-cloud, hybrid or on-premises needs, data residency, release cadence, integration approach and extension model. SAP describes public- and private-cloud options for S/4HANA Cloud, while Oracle’s catalogue includes cloud and on-premises families.
- Evaluate implementation and ongoing support. Ask for named partner experience with comparable projects, migration and integration plans, data ownership terms, training, support coverage and the post-go-live operating model. Microsoft says it routes buyers to partners for assessment, implementation and industry services; confirm the scope and cost of any proposed engagement.
- Compare lifecycle economics. Request a scoped proposal covering licensing or subscriptions, implementation, integrations, migration, testing, support, upgrades, internal staffing and exit costs. The sources available do not establish a neutral, comparable price table across these vendors, so avoid treating a headline subscription price as total cost.
- Run scripted demonstrations and reference checks. Give shortlisted vendors identical scenarios and acceptance criteria. Speak with customers whose processes and implementation scope resemble yours, and ask what changed between the proposal and the live system.
What a vendor shortlist cannot tell you
A vendor name or product overview cannot establish implementation speed, total cost, project success or performance for your organization. Official product pages describe vendor offerings, not neutral comparative evaluations. The 2026 guides are useful for finding candidates, but their segment labels are editorial judgments rather than market-share statistics. No neutral, original-publisher market-share or adoption figure is established by the cited material.
Likewise, do not assume that a broad product family includes every capability in the edition or license being quoted. Confirm modules, integrations, geographic localization, data residency, release terms and support in writing for the exact proposal. ERP selection is a business-process and change-management decision as well as a software decision.
