Capabilities vary by edition, region, contract, connector, and implementation. Treat the table as a screening tool, not a substitute for a matter-specific demonstration.
What counts as an eDiscovery tool?
“eDiscovery software” can describe several different categories:
#1 Best Overall
- FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
- ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
- Legal hold and preservation: issuing notices, tracking acknowledgments, interviewing custodians, and documenting preservation.
- Collection: gathering email, cloud content, chats, mobile data, endpoints, databases, and forensic images.
- Processing: extracting metadata, OCR, de-duplication, normalization, and data preparation.
- Early case assessment: sizing a matter and identifying likely relevant custodians and documents.
- Review: searching, batching, coding, organizing, and assigning documents to reviewers.
- Analytics and TAR: clustering, conceptual search, near-duplicate detection, email threading, communication analysis, predictive coding, and continuous active learning.
- Privilege and confidentiality: privilege coding, redactions, access controls, and privilege-log support.
- Production: creating images, native files, metadata, Bates numbers, redactions, load files, and exception reports.
- Trial preparation: building chronologies, deposition materials, exhibits, and case narratives.
- Forensic investigation: processing technically difficult data and analyzing devices or structured sources.
A platform can be excellent at one stage of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model and weak at another. A legal-hold product is not necessarily a full document-review system, and a powerful forensic processor may not be the easiest tool for attorneys to use during review.
How a law firm should evaluate the workflow
- Assess the dispute or investigation and identify likely custodians.
- Issue and track legal holds.
- Identify data sources and preservation obligations.
- Collect data defensibly.
- Process, de-duplicate, normalize, and OCR the collection.
- Cull irrelevant material.
- Review for responsiveness, issues, confidentiality, and privilege.
- Use search, clustering, analytics, TAR, or AI where appropriate.
- Perform quality control, privilege checks, and sampling.
- Apply redactions and confidentiality designations.
- Create and validate productions and load files.
- Maintain audit logs, reports, and documentation.
- Export, archive, or delete matter data under the firm’s policy.
Relativity describes RelativityOne as covering preservation, collection, processing, review, analytics, and production, while its Legal Hold product supports notices, custodian interviews, follow-ups, response tracking, and audit reporting. Relativity’s workflow overview and Legal Hold documentation provide product-specific detail.
Best eDiscovery tools by law-firm profile
Best for complex, high-volume litigation: RelativityOne
RelativityOne is the safest default for large firms, recurring litigation, investigations, regulatory matters, antitrust work, and matters requiring extensive customization. It combines a broad workflow, advanced review and analytics, production tools, integrations, reporting, and a large service-provider ecosystem.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallRelativity advertises collection from sources including Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Slack, and ChatGPT Enterprise. That does not mean every connector is identical in every matter: confirm licensing, permissions, retention settings, export behavior, and geographic availability.
The trade-off is operational complexity. Firms may need trained administrators, consultants, or managed-service support. Relativity’s pricing is not a universal public rate card. Its materials describe pay-as-you-go and one- or three-year commitments, while Cost Explorer documentation identifies data usage, users, staging, storage tiers, AI usage, and contract terms as potential cost factors. See the Relativity pricing page and Cost Explorer documentation.
Choose it when: the firm needs repeatable, sophisticated workflows and has the staff to administer them. Avoid making it the default for one small, straightforward matter.
Best collaborative cloud platform: Everlaw
Everlaw is a strong candidate for mid-market firms and collaborative litigation teams that want cloud review, visual and conceptual analysis, search, production, and case-building in an approachable environment. It can provide more review depth than basic self-service tools without necessarily requiring the same administrative model as the most customizable enterprise platforms.
Confirm the exact AI capabilities, data-source coverage, production specifications, support model, and pricing. Cloud-only deployment may also be unsuitable where a client requires a particular hosting or hybrid arrangement.
Rank #2
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
Best integrated AI-oriented workflow: DISCO
DISCO appeals to firms seeking an integrated cloud workflow with AI-assisted review and case analysis. It is worth considering for mid-sized litigation practices that want a comparatively streamlined experience.
During a demonstration, test production exception handling, reporting, administrative permissions, connector coverage, and the boundaries of AI functionality. Do not assume that a feature labeled AI is unlimited, included in every plan, or independently validated for your matter.
Best for small-firm self-service: Logikcull
Logikcull is generally better suited to solo and small firms, smaller collections, and attorneys who need a lower-administration workflow for ingestion, filtering, search, culling, and review. It can be more practical than an enterprise platform when the matter is modest and the firm lacks dedicated discovery staff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore choosing it, verify advanced analytics, privilege workflows, production formats, reporting, mobile and chat support, and performance at the size of the firm’s actual matter. Simplicity reduces the training burden; it does not remove the need for defensible collection and quality control.
Best for discovery plus trial preparation: Nextpoint
Nextpoint deserves attention from boutique and midsize litigation firms that want discovery and trial preparation together. Chronologies, deposition workflows, exhibits, summaries, and case organization can matter as much as document review after discovery closes.
Confirm advanced analytics, data-source support, production specifications, and how its economics change as the matter grows. It may not be the best match for forensic-heavy investigations or firms requiring the broadest enterprise ecosystem.
Best enterprise or hybrid alternative: Reveal
Reveal is an enterprise-oriented alternative for large litigation and investigations, particularly where advanced analytics or potential hybrid and on-premises deployment options are important. Verify feature parity, AI governance, implementation requirements, data residency, and support across the specific deployment being proposed.

- EASY SETUP — USB-powered connect to your computer for quick and simple scanning; No batteries or external power supply required to operate portable document scanner; Standard Connectivity: USB 2.0
Its implementation model, user experience, timeline, support arrangements, and custom pricing deserve close scrutiny. A highly configurable system can be unnecessary overhead for a small litigation practice.
Best for legal hold and information governance: Exterro
Exterro is particularly relevant when discovery is connected to privacy, information governance, compliance, and enterprise legal operations. It may be a stronger strategic fit than a review-only product for organizations trying to standardize preservation and governance across many matters.
Firms primarily seeking document review and trial preparation should compare its review, production, and case-organization capabilities with dedicated litigation platforms.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Best for forensic and technically complex investigations: Nuix
Nuix is aimed at technically demanding investigations, forensic data, government work, and large enterprise matters. Its strengths are most relevant when the challenge involves difficult data processing or specialized investigative analysis rather than simple attorney-led review.
The trade-off is technical demand. Specialized forensic and data-processing staff may be necessary, and pricing and deployment can be more complicated than for self-service tools.
Best low-commitment option for small matters: GoldFynch
GoldFynch may suit very small firms and occasional matters where direct access and low commitment are more important than a large services ecosystem. Treat claims about affordability or ease of use as preliminary until you confirm current plan limits, support, data-source coverage, advanced analytics, and production capabilities.
Best Microsoft 365-native starting point: Microsoft Purview eDiscovery
Microsoft Purview eDiscovery can be a useful first step when the relevant data is primarily inside Microsoft 365 and the firm or client already has the necessary licensing. It may support basic preservation, search, review, and export without moving all data immediately into a dedicated platform.
It is not automatically a complete litigation-review replacement. Licensing, tenant configuration, non-Microsoft data, production requirements, analytics, and service-provider needs can change the answer. The Sedona Conference’s small-case eDiscovery primer distinguishes Microsoft 365 eDiscovery from dedicated platforms such as Everlaw, Logikcull, RelativityOne, Casepoint, and Nextpoint.
Rank #4

Data sources matter more than raw gigabytes
Ask each vendor to demonstrate the exact collection path for:
- Microsoft 365, Exchange, and Google Workspace;
- Slack, Microsoft Teams, and workplace AI systems;
- SMS, iMessage, mobile devices, and other messaging platforms;
- cloud storage and endpoints;
- social-media data;
- databases and structured records;
- audio and video;
- forensic images;
- encrypted or password-protected files;
- scanned documents requiring OCR; and
- foreign-language or multilingual data.
A 20-GB matter involving mobile data, urgent deadlines, difficult privilege issues, and cross-border restrictions may be harder than a much larger collection of ordinary office documents. Test whether conversations, attachments, family relationships, timestamps, and time zones remain understandable after collection and processing.
Review, AI, privilege, and production
Useful review capabilities include Boolean and proximity search, metadata search, conceptual search, near-duplicate detection, email threading, communication analysis, timelines, clustering, TAR or continuous active learning, translation, transcription, quality-control sampling, and reviewer-disagreement reporting.
Recommended Free Tools
AI can prioritize, summarize, classify, cluster, or predict. It does not remove the need for defensible collection, human validation, sampling, privilege review, production checks, and documentation. Ask vendors to explain ground-truth creation, confidence thresholds, error reporting, audit logs, human override, treatment of privileged material, and whether prompts or outputs are retained or used for model training.
Relativity says its aiR for Privilege can predict potentially privileged documents and draft privilege-log descriptions. Its documentation also identifies usage-based and contract-defined terms. That is assistance, not an automatic legal determination. See aiR for Privilege documentation.
Production should receive equal weight with search and AI. Test native and image productions, TIFF and PDF output, metadata, Bates numbering, redaction burn-in, family integrity, slip sheets, DAT/OPT/CSV load files, custom specifications, exception reporting, reproduction of prior productions, and export limits.
An audit log shows what users did; it does not prove that the firm’s collection scope, search method, TAR protocol, sampling, or privilege process was reasonable.
eDiscovery pricing explained
Most platforms combine several charges rather than using one simple price. The quote may include or separately bill:
Best Value
- OUR MOST ADVANCED SCANSNAP. Large touchscreen, fast 45ppm double-sided scanning, 100-sheet document feeder, Wi-Fi and USB connectivity, automatic optimizations, and support for cloud services. Upgraded replacement for the discontinued iX1600
- CUSTOMIZABLE. SHARABLE. Select personalized profiles from the touchscreen. Send to PC, Mac, mobile devices, and clouds. QUICK MENU lets you quickly scan-drag-drop to your favorite computer apps
- STABLE WIRELESS OR USB CONNECTION. Built-in Wi-Fi 6 for the fastest and most secure scanning. Connect to smart devices or cloud services without a computer. USB-C connection also available
- PHOTO AND DOCUMENT ORGANIZATION MADE EFFORTLESS. Easily manage, edit, and use scanned data from documents, receipts, photos, and business cards. Automatically optimize, name, and sort files
- AVOIDS PAPER JAMS AND DAMAGE. Features a brake roller system to feed paper smoothly, a multi-feed sensor that detects pages stuck together, and skew detection to prevent paper damage and data loss
- user, reviewer, named-user, or concurrent-user fees;
- hosting and storage, including archive or cold storage;
- upload, ingestion, processing, OCR, and de-duplication;
- translation, transcription, or specialized data processing;
- productions and re-productions;
- AI or document-analysis usage;
- professional services, project management, and training;
- premium support;
- data export, termination, and deletion; and
- minimum monthly, annual, or matter commitments.
Enterprise products are often quote-based, while smaller products may use monthly, per-matter, per-user, or consumption pricing. Published estimates are not comparable unless they cover the same data volume, users, processing, storage duration, productions, services, and geography.
Request a sample invoice based on your own matter profile. Model both a normal case and a scenario in which data volume doubles, the review team expands, a second production is required, or AI analysis is used extensively.
Software or managed eDiscovery service?
Self-service software may be sensible when the firm has repeatable matters, internal discovery expertise, predictable data sources, and staff who can manage permissions, workflows, productions, and quality control.
Vendor-assisted software is a middle ground when the firm wants control of the workspace but needs help with processing, collection, configuration, or production.
Managed review or full-service litigation support may be more economical for a one-off matter, an urgent deadline, unusual data, a large review population, or a firm without trained administrators. Buying a license is not automatically cheaper than paying an experienced provider to perform the work.
How to test a platform before signing
Use representative data, not a polished vendor sample. Your pilot should include:
- ordinary email and attachments;
- Slack or Teams conversations;
- mobile or text-message data;
- scanned documents and OCR;
- foreign-language material if relevant;
- privileged documents and confidential information;
- redactions and confidentiality designations;
- at least one complex proximity or metadata search;
- a sample AI or TAR workflow with validation and sampling;
- a real production specification with natives, images, Bates numbers, and load files;
- an export and, if possible, re-import test; and
- an audit-log, permissions, deletion, and recovery review.
Ask support staff to demonstrate what happens when a production fails, a connector loses access, a family relationship is broken, or a reviewer needs to reproduce an earlier result.

Procurement checklist
- What exactly is included in the quoted price?
- Is billing based on peak or average hosted data?
- Are staging, processing, OCR, translation, productions, AI, and exports separate charges?
- Are reviewer accounts named, concurrent, unlimited, or tiered?
- Are there matter minimums or annual commitments?
- What happens when a matter closes?
- Can the platform reproduce a production months later?
- Which connectors are native, partner-built, or service-assisted?
- Where is data stored and processed?
- Does any AI provider retain prompts, outputs, or customer data for model training?
- What security certifications, audit reports, subprocessors, and incident commitments apply to this edition and region?
- What support is included during a production deadline?
- Which functions require professional services?
- What are the export, deletion, and termination timelines and fees?
- Can the vendor provide a sample invoice using the firm’s own matter assumptions?
- How are AI results validated, overridden, audited, and documented?
Final recommendations
- Solo or small firm: Start with Logikcull or GoldFynch for modest matters; consider Microsoft Purview when the relevant data is already in Microsoft 365.
- Boutique litigation firm: Compare Everlaw, DISCO, Logikcull, and Nextpoint based on review needs, trial preparation, and support.
- Midsize firm: Evaluate Everlaw, DISCO, Nextpoint, and RelativityOne; choose based on administrator capacity and matter complexity.
- Large firm or recurring litigation program: RelativityOne is the strongest default, with Reveal and Casepoint as serious alternatives.
- Legal hold and governance program: Give Exterro and Relativity Legal Hold particular attention.
- Forensic or technically complex investigation: Evaluate Nuix and specialized service providers.
- Cross-border matter: Make data residency, transfer rules, local collection, subprocessors, and AI-processing geography mandatory procurement questions.
- One-off or urgent matter: Price a managed-service provider alongside software licenses; outsourcing may reduce deadline and administration risk.
The best platform is the one that fits the firm’s actual workflow, data, staffing, budget, and production obligations. No product becomes defensible merely because it offers AI, TAR, analytics, or audit logs.
