Solana, Base, BNB Smart Chain, TRON and Bitcoin follow. These figures are a dated snapshot, not a permanent leaderboard; TVL changes with asset prices, deposits and measurement methods.

CoinGecko’s chain ranking observed on the same date shows the same top-six order but slightly different totals: Ethereum $52.454 billion, Solana $6.453 billion, Base $6.256 billion, BNB Smart Chain $5.644 billion, TRON $5.616 billion and Bitcoin $4.457 billion. What TVL measures—and what it does not
Total value locked is the reported USD value of cryptoassets deposited in decentralized-finance protocols. Because the total is expressed in dollars, it can rise or fall when asset prices change even if the quantity deposited does not. TVL is an indicator of reported economic scale, not a count of users or a direct measure of transactions, safety, decentralization or investment quality.

It is also distinct from other indicators shown on chain dashboards. DeFiLlama lists bridged TVL, stablecoin market capitalization, DEX volume, fees, app revenue and active addresses separately. Stablecoin supply and bridged value can help describe capital presence, while volume, fees, revenue and active addresses offer different views of activity; none is interchangeable with DeFi TVL. DeFiLlama’s chain table presents these as separate metrics.
Why TVL totals can differ
Providers use different coverage and methods
Aggregator totals depend on which protocols and assets are covered and how values are calculated. A secondary page reproducing DeFiLlama data, with a snapshot dated October 3, 2026, says its chain total excludes liquid staking, bridges and deposits flagged as double-counted. It cautions that protocol-level figures may include such categories, so they need not add up to the chain total. Treat that as the scope note for that secondary page’s snapshot, not as a confirmed statement of DeFiLlama’s current methodology. DeFiLlama.

A 2025 study, “Towards Verifiability of Total Value Locked (TVL) in Decentralized Finance,” describes additional challenges in independently verifying reported TVL. In the authors’ sample of 939 Ethereum DeFi projects, 10.5% of protocols relied on external servers; the study also identified 68 alternative methods to standard balance queries and 240 equivalent balance queries repeated across multiple protocols. These are findings about that study’s sample and methodology, not current statistics for every chain or aggregator. Read the 2025 study.
Published figures are not all independently verified
The study proposes verifiable TVL, or vTVL, calculated from on-chain data and standard balance queries. In a case study of 400 protocols, its estimates aligned with published figures for 46.5% of protocols. That result describes the study’s sample and method; it is not an audit of the chain totals in the October 2026 rankings.

How to use a TVL ranking
- Check the timestamp and provider. Rankings move, and the same-date totals from DeFiLlama and CoinGecko already differ slightly.
- Compare like with like. Use one provider and the same time window when examining changes; do not compare a 24-hour move on one chain with a 30-day move on another.
- Separate scale from activity. Consider volume, fees, revenue and active addresses as distinct measures rather than treating them as confirmation of TVL.
- Do not read rank as a recommendation. A high reported TVL does not establish that a chain is safer, more decentralized, more active or more likely to perform well as an investment.
