The best SEO tool depends on what you mean by “traffic”: Search Console measures Google Search performance for a site you own, while Semrush and Ahrefs estimate competitor visibility. Keyword Planner helps assess Google search demand and paid-search forecasts; Google Trends reveals relative interest and seasonality. For most small sites, start with the three free Google tools and add one paid platform only when competitor research justifies the cost. No third-party tool can report a competitor’s exact Google traffic.
Compare the five tools at a glance
| Tool | Best for | What its traffic data means | Cost position | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | Broad SEO, competitor, and market research | Modeled estimates of competitor traffic and keyword visibility | Premium; separate toolkits can add cost | Teams that combine SEO, paid search, and reporting |
| Ahrefs | Competitor keywords, pages, and backlinks | Modeled traffic estimates, ranking keywords, and estimated traffic potential | Premium; plan limits apply | SEO specialists and content teams |
| Google Search Console | Measuring a verified site’s Google Search performance | First-party impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position | Free | Every site owner |
| Google Keyword Planner | Google search-demand research and ad forecasting | Search estimates and paid-campaign forecasts, not organic traffic | No separate tool subscription; Google Ads account setup requires billing information | Advertisers and businesses validating commercial terms |
| Google Trends | Seasonality, momentum, and regional interest | Normalized relative search interest, not a count of visits or searches | Free | Publishers and marketers choosing timing or geography |
What “traffic research” actually measures
These tools answer different questions, so their numbers should not be compared as though they were the same metric.

- Actual Google Search performance: Search Console reports clicks and impressions for a verified property, along with CTR, average position, queries, and pages. It is the closest source to direct measurement of your own Google Search results. It does not represent all website sessions, and it does not provide private competitor data. Google describes the product at Search Console.
- Competitor traffic estimates: Semrush and Ahrefs use their own keyword, ranking, search-volume, and modeling systems to estimate visibility and likely traffic. Use the figures to compare domains, find pages, and discover opportunities—not for accounting or as exact visit counts.
- Traffic opportunity and demand: Keyword Planner estimates search demand and forecasts paid campaign outcomes. Ahrefs’ Traffic Potential estimates the broader traffic a top-ranking page may receive from related queries. Neither guarantees the organic visits your page will earn.
- Overall site sessions and outcomes: Google Analytics 4 is useful for sessions, engagement, and conversions on a site you can instrument. It does not replace Search Console’s query and impression reporting or a competitor research database.
1. Semrush: best all-around competitive research platform
What it does well
Semrush brings keyword discovery, competitor analysis, site auditing, rank tracking, content tools, and paid-search intelligence into a broad marketing platform. Its Traffic & Market Toolkit offers Traffic Overview, historical data, daily trends, industry and market views, traffic distribution, competitor monitoring, and regional trends. The product page describes coverage across more than 190 countries and regions and analysis of up to 100 competitors on the listed Pro tier; it also describes Google Analytics and Search Console integrations for reporting workflows. Check the current scope and terms at Semrush Traffic & Market pricing and features.

#1 Best Overall
Where it falls short
- Competitor traffic is estimated rather than measured from a rival’s analytics.
- The platform can feel complex if you need only occasional keyword ideas.
- Toolkits and add-ons complicate the total cost. The Traffic & Market Toolkit is a separate, materially more expensive offering than the core SEO research product; its price and plan inclusions can change, so check the current buying pages for your country and billing terms.
Choose Semrush if you want one broad platform for keyword research, competitor traffic analysis, SEO, PPC, reporting, and market research.
2. Ahrefs: best for competitor SEO, pages, and backlinks
What it does well
Ahrefs connects keywords, ranking pages, SERPs, and backlinks. Keywords Explorer provides keyword ideas, search-volume estimates, ranking difficulty, SERP analysis, and Traffic Potential. That last metric looks beyond one query: a page ranking for a target term may also attract visits from related searches. See Ahrefs Keywords Explorer.
Site Explorer helps investigate a competitor’s estimated organic traffic, ranking keywords, top pages, and backlinks. Ahrefs’ current product lineup also includes Site Audit, Rank Tracker, Content Explorer, Web Analytics, and Brand Radar; its FAQ outlines the tools. This makes it particularly useful for identifying the pages and topics behind another site’s visibility and for backlink-led content planning.
Rank #2
Limits and plan considerations
- Site Explorer traffic figures remain estimates, and the proprietary keyword difficulty score is a directional indicator, not a guarantee of how hard a term will be to rank for.
- Usage limits vary by plan and can involve projects, tracked keywords, credits, rows, crawls, or exports. The free plan offers limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access for verified website owners.
- Ahrefs’ pricing page has displayed plans in GBP, but prices, currencies, billing options, and limits can vary or change. Check the current Ahrefs pricing page and the plan comparison before budgeting. Existing customers may also be on legacy terms; see how Ahrefs identifies subscription plans.
Choose Ahrefs if your main job is discovering competitor keywords, top-performing pages, backlink opportunities, and broader traffic potential. Individuals often do not need to pay for both Ahrefs and Semrush: choose according to your workflow, and consider both only when research volume or cross-database comparison warrants the expense.
3. Google Search Console: best for your actual Google Search performance
Search Console is the essential free baseline for any verified website. It reports Google Search clicks and impressions, click-through rate, average position, queries, and pages. Unlike competitor estimates, these are first-party performance measurements for the property you manage.
How to use its data
- Find queries and pages already receiving impressions, including unexpected related searches.
- Review pages with substantial impressions but weak CTR; the title, snippet, or result’s fit with the query may need attention.
- Look for relevant queries where average position is near the first page, then assess whether the page can better satisfy the search intent.
- Check whether optimization work changes actual Google Search clicks and impressions over time.
Search Console is not real-time, does not show every query, and some query reporting is limited by privacy and aggregation thresholds. Average position is an aggregate metric, not a fixed rank every user sees. Clicks are not equivalent to total website sessions. Use it to measure your own Google Search results, not to size a whole market or inspect a competitor.
4. Google Keyword Planner: best for demand and commercial validation
Keyword Planner is part of Google Ads. It can generate keyword ideas from a seed term or website, provide monthly search estimates, group terms, and forecast advertising outcomes such as potential clicks, impressions, costs, and bids. Google describes these features and access requirements in its Keyword Planner help page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is especially helpful when a business needs to compare commercial or transactional terms, geographic targeting, and advertising signals. There is no separate subscription for the tool, but Google’s instructions say that users must complete account setup and enter billing information to unlock basic keyword-idea features.
Do not mistake ad forecasts for SEO forecasts
- Search-volume figures may be rounded, grouped, or broad rather than precise counts for a single phrase.
- Paid campaign forecasts are not predictions of organic clicks. Organic results depend on rankings, SERP layout, intent, and click behavior.
- Advertiser competition and bid signals do not directly measure organic ranking difficulty.
- Review the live results page as well: volume alone does not reveal whether searchers want a guide, product page, local service, or something else.
5. Google Trends: best for seasonality and momentum
Google Trends helps answer whether interest is rising, falling, seasonal, or concentrated in particular places. It is useful for comparing topic concepts, timing a publication, checking regional variation, and spotting emerging interest. Use the Google Trends interface to compare terms or topics over a relevant period and geography.
Rank #4
Trends reports normalized, relative search interest—not monthly search counts, site visits, or a competitor’s traffic. A score of 100 marks the peak interest in the selected comparison and period; it does not mean 100 searches. Low-volume topics may not show enough data, and a topic comparison can differ from a search-term comparison. A short-lived rise is not proof that demand will last or that a new page will rank.
How to choose by budget and job
| Your situation | Recommended starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner or small site with a tight budget | Search Console, Keyword Planner, and Trends | Measure your own search performance, check demand, and assess timing before paying for competitor databases. |
| Content marketer planning an editorial calendar | Search Console plus Ahrefs or Semrush; use Trends for timing | Combine real site queries with competitor topics, then check seasonality and the live results. |
| Affiliate publisher or SEO specialist | Ahrefs or Semrush, plus Search Console once the site is verified | Competitor pages and keywords help with discovery; Search Console shows what actually gains traction on your site. |
| Local business | Search Console, Keyword Planner, Trends, and a paid platform only if needed | Check city and neighborhood terms and inspect location-specific results, including map listings. National averages can hide local intent and mobile differences. |
| Agency or in-house team researching several markets | Semrush or Ahrefs, with Search Console and Analytics for client-owned properties | Prioritize competitor coverage, country and language databases, historical needs, exports, integrations, and plan limits. |
| E-commerce brand with paid-search needs | Keyword Planner plus Semrush or Ahrefs, and Search Console | Use Google Ads demand and bid signals for paid planning, competitor tools for organic discovery, and first-party data for actual search performance. |
For Semrush, select the country and toolkit that match your work: its broad feature set is most valuable when SEO, PPC, market research, or reporting overlap. For Ahrefs, check which plan’s project, keyword, credit, and export limits match your workload. Neither paid subscription guarantees rankings or traffic.

- Generate ideas: Enter a seed topic in Semrush or Ahrefs and shortlist relevant terms by intent, difficulty, estimated volume, and traffic potential.
- Inspect the results: Review the live search results for the intended country and language. Identify what formats and answers already satisfy the query; tool scores cannot replace this check.
- Check momentum: Compare the candidate topic in Google Trends for seasonality, recent direction, and regional differences.
- Validate commercial demand: Use Keyword Planner to assess related terms, geography, and ad signals when commercial intent matters. Keep paid forecasts separate from organic expectations.
- Look for existing footholds: In Search Console, find your pages with relevant impressions, weak CTR, or queries around positions 5–20. An existing page may be a better opportunity than a new one.
- Make the editorial decision: Choose based on business value, intent fit, and your ability to create a more useful result—not search volume alone.
A workflow for improving a page you already have
- In Search Console, open the performance report and filter it to the target page.
- Review queries with high impressions and low CTR, near-page-one positions, or related terms the page does not clearly address.
- Compare the page with ranking competitors in Ahrefs or Semrush. Check intent match, completeness, internal links, title and snippet, and format rather than copying a rival’s outline.
- Use Trends to see whether demand is seasonal or changing; avoid judging a seasonal page against an unrelated period.
- Update the page where the evidence supports a change, then measure its Google Search performance in Search Console.
A workflow for assessing a competitor’s opportunity
- Enter the competitor domain in Ahrefs Site Explorer or Semrush and review estimated top pages and ranking keywords.
- Separate branded searches from non-branded searches so brand demand does not distort your view of replicable topic opportunities.
- Look for pages ranking across several related queries, then inspect those results manually for intent, format, and SERP features.
- Validate topic demand with Keyword Planner and Trends, using the target country and language.
- Treat competitor traffic estimates as comparative clues, not reported visits. Plan a page that serves the same intent more usefully rather than assuming the estimate is attainable.
Why tool numbers disagree—and why volume is not traffic
Semrush, Ahrefs, Search Console, and Keyword Planner may disagree because they use different keyword sets, country and device assumptions, ranking snapshots, search-volume models, click-through assumptions, and definitions of organic traffic. Search Console reports performance for your property; third-party platforms model competitors. A difference is not, by itself, evidence that one tool is broken.
A keyword’s search volume does not equal visits available to your page. Ads, direct answers, AI and other SERP features, strong brands, repeat searches without clicks, and mismatched intent can all reduce organic clicks. Likewise, position alone does not produce a fixed share of clicks: results vary by query, device, location, title, brand familiarity, and page layout. Give more weight to the live SERP, traffic opportunity, and business value than to a single volume or difficulty number.
Common situations that need extra care
New websites
A new site may not yet have useful Search Console history. Use Ahrefs or Semrush for competitor and topic discovery, Keyword Planner for demand signals, and Trends for timing. Treat those estimates as hypotheses until your own pages begin accumulating first-party performance data.
Local and international research
For local SEO, validate city and neighborhood modifiers, mobile results, map-pack visibility, local intent, and Business Profile visibility. For international SEO, choose the intended country and language before comparing keyword volumes or estimated traffic; coverage and estimates vary by market.
Low-volume or emerging topics
Keyword databases can understate a new product, technology, cultural term, service, or news-driven topic. For those cases, weigh Trends and live SERP inspection more heavily, but remember that early momentum may fade before a page can rank.
Recommended tool stacks
- Free foundation: Search Console for your Google Search performance, Keyword Planner for demand and commercial signals, and Trends for timing.
- Broad paid research: Add Semrush when you need competitor comparisons, SEO and PPC overlap, market research, or reporting across several rivals.
- Competitor SEO and content research: Add Ahrefs when top pages, backlinks, ranking keywords, and traffic potential are central to the work.
- Agency workflow: Pair one paid platform with Search Console and Analytics access for the properties you manage. Compare plan limits and export needs with your actual account volume before committing.
Other options include Moz Pro, SE Ranking, Ubersuggest, and Mangools/KWFinder. They may suit a preferred interface, budget, or simpler workflow, but the core decision remains the same: determine whether you need first-party measurement, competitor estimates, demand validation, or trend context before choosing a subscription.
