BitPay is the best all-around turnkey choice for most established merchants, while Stripe stablecoin payments suit existing U.S. Stripe users, NOWPayments fits broad multi-asset acceptance, BTCPay Server is the specialist choice for Bitcoin self-custody, and Coinbase Business or Payment Acceptance targets U.S. and Singapore businesses building stablecoin infrastructure. The right gateway depends on whether you want bank settlement, stablecoins, many cryptocurrencies, or control of your own wallet and server.
Quick comparison
| Provider | Best for | Model | Settlement and custody | Published pricing signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BitPay | Turnkey merchant processing | Hosted processor | Fiat, crypto or hybrid; next-business-day bank settlement is described; processor-managed option | 2% + $0.25 below $500,000 monthly volume; lower tiers at higher volume |
| Stripe stablecoin payments | Businesses already using Stripe | Stablecoin payment method inside Stripe | USD credited to Stripe balance; Stripe-managed settlement | Public page currently shows both 1.5% and a promotional 0.8% signal; verify your account rate |
| NOWPayments | Broad asset coverage and flexible integrations | Hosted multi-asset gateway | Crypto or converted asset, depending on configuration; merchant-configurable flows | 0.5% mono-currency service fee or 1% when conversion is required, before other costs |
| BTCPay Server | Bitcoin self-custody | Open-source, self-hosted gateway | Merchant wallet; no processor percentage fee | No processor transaction fee, but network, hosting and maintenance costs remain |
| Coinbase Business / Payment Acceptance | Enterprise stablecoin payment systems | Custodial business platform and API | USD or USDC depending on product; Coinbase custody | Pricing is not fully public for every implementation |
These are different product categories, not interchangeable coin-count rankings. Compare the custody model, supported networks, settlement path, integration effort and total cost—not just the advertised percentage.
How the ranking was determined
The ranking weighs merchant fit (25%), settlement and custody (20%), integration quality (15%), total cost (15%), relevant asset and network coverage (10%), operational risk (10%) and documentation and pricing transparency (5%). It is an editorial comparison of documented capabilities, not a hands-on performance test.
1. BitPay: best turnkey crypto payment processor
Why choose it
BitPay most closely resembles a conventional payment processor. It offers hosted invoices, online checkout, email billing and integrations for Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and other platforms. Merchants can settle in local currency, cryptocurrency or a combination. See BitPay Business and online payments.

Fees and settlement
BitPay’s published tiers are 2% + $0.25 below $500,000 in monthly transaction volume, 1.5% + $0.25 from $500,000 to $999,999, and 1% + $0.25 at $1 million or more. Rates are adjusted using cumulative monthly volume, and high-risk industries may pay more (pricing). BitPay says bank settlement is initiated the next business day; its support documentation lists, for example, a $20 minimum for USD settlement (settlement schedule).
Strengths and limitations
- Exchange-rate locking limits direct price exposure during an invoice.
- Useful hosted checkout, invoices, plugins and developer tools.
- Bank settlement avoids private-key management for merchants that do not want custody.
- The entry-level fee is materially higher than the often-repeated “1% BitPay” claim.
- Approval, identity checks, risk-tier pricing, account reviews and payment exceptions still apply.
- Supported coins and networks vary by account and jurisdiction; it is not unrestricted long-tail token acceptance.
Choose BitPay if: you are an established online merchant that values support, compliance processes and fiat settlement. Look elsewhere if: you need Bitcoin self-custody, the lowest possible percentage cost or many obscure assets.
2. Stripe stablecoin payments: best for existing Stripe merchants
What it actually supports
Stripe’s product is stablecoin acceptance inside Stripe—not a gateway for Bitcoin, Ether and every altcoin. Stripe documents Checkout, Payment Links, Elements and the Payment Intents API, with completed payments settling into the merchant’s Stripe balance in USD (stablecoin payments).
Documented assets are USDC on Ethereum, Solana, Polygon and Base; USDP on Ethereum and Solana; and USDG on Ethereum. The list can change. Stripe currently says only U.S. businesses can accept stablecoin payments, although customers may pay globally subject to restrictions.

Pricing and operating rules
Stripe’s public pricing page currently displays both a 1.5% figure and a promotional 0.8% figure with “through January 1, 2027; +0.2% thereafter.” Confirm the rate shown in your account and contract before comparing costs (Stripe pricing).
- Customer transaction limits are documented at $10,000 per transaction.
- Recurring payments and partial refunds are supported; manual capture is not.
- Refunds return as stablecoins to the customer’s original wallet.
- Stablecoin payments do not have card-style disputes or chargebacks.
Choose Stripe if: you already run Stripe and want stablecoins alongside cards, with USD accounting and familiar APIs. Look elsewhere if: you need volatile assets, merchant eligibility outside the U.S., self-custody or chargeback-style dispute handling.
3. NOWPayments: best for broad crypto coverage
Integrations and assets
NOWPayments provides a payment API, payouts API, subscriptions, payment links, invoices, ecommerce plugins, point-of-sale links and donation tools (help center). It advertises support for more than 100 crypto wallets (NOWPayments).
Fees and settlement choices
The site advertises a 0.5% service fee for mono-currency payments, where the merchant receives the same asset paid, and 1% when conversion is required. Those are service fees, not a complete cost estimate. Add blockchain network fees, conversion spreads, withdrawals, destination-wallet or bank charges and any applicable compliance costs. Network fees vary with the blockchain, asset, congestion and processing speed.

Operational trade-offs
- Broad coverage lets you accept assets customers actually hold and retain crypto when desired.
- More assets and networks increase pricing, accounting, refund and support complexity.
- Test wrong-network transfers, underpayments, overpayments, expired invoices and delayed confirmations.
- Verify country, asset and industry eligibility before launch.
Choose NOWPayments if: you need multiple assets, payment links, subscriptions, donations or payouts and can manage wallet and network decisions. Look elsewhere if: you want a narrowly controlled stablecoin-only flow with automatic USD settlement and minimal operational variation.
4. BTCPay Server: best self-hosted Bitcoin gateway
Cost and control
BTCPay Server is free, open-source and self-hosted. Its documentation describes no processor transaction fee beyond blockchain costs (BTCPay guide). You still pay for hosting, backups, monitoring, security work, Bitcoin network fees and, where used, Lightning liquidity or routing.
What the merchant operates
- Wallets, private-key backups and signing procedures.
- Node synchronization, Lightning liquidity, uptime, updates and monitoring.
- Refund workflows, accounting exports and customer support.
- Any separate service needed to convert Bitcoin to USD.
BTCPay supports online and in-person use and can assist some migrations through its legacy BitPay API compatibility. A server outage or lost key can interrupt or permanently affect operations, so redundancy and recovery drills matter.
Choose BTCPay if: you are technically capable and prioritize Bitcoin sovereignty and self-custody. Look elsewhere if: you need one-click deployment, automatic bank settlement, broad token coverage or a provider to manage keys and infrastructure.

5. Coinbase Business or Payment Acceptance: best for enterprise stablecoin infrastructure
Current product distinction
Do not treat Coinbase Commerce as a current standalone recommendation. Coinbase says the Commerce portal became inaccessible after March 31, 2026, directing merchants to Coinbase Business or alternatives (transition information).
Coinbase Business is available to legal entities in the U.S. or Singapore and describes custody, bank offramps, accounting integrations and stablecoin payments. Its transition information lists USDC and says USDT was launching in March 2026; confirm current availability before implementation.
Payment Acceptance API
Coinbase Payment Acceptance targets payment platforms, marketplaces, PSPs and large commerce businesses. Its APIs cover authorization, capture, voids, refunds, settlement, webhooks and reporting, with documented cross-chain support including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism and Polygon (Payment Acceptance overview).
- Strong fit for stablecoin checkout requiring lifecycle controls and reconciliation.
- Onboarding is partner- or enterprise-oriented rather than a universal instant signup.
- The model is custodial, and geographic, asset and account eligibility apply.
- Former Commerce integrations require migration work.
Choose Coinbase if: you are a U.S. or Singapore business, marketplace or payment platform building stablecoin infrastructure. Look elsewhere if: you want a simple plugin, self-custody, broad volatile-asset support or transparent self-serve pricing.

Hosted processor versus self-hosted gateway
| Hosted (BitPay, NOWPayments, Stripe, Coinbase) | Self-hosted (BTCPay) | |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment | Faster; provider runs core infrastructure | Merchant or host runs servers and updates |
| Settlement | Often includes conversion and bank payout | Funds go to merchant wallet unless another service is added |
| Custody | Usually provider-managed or custodial | Merchant-controlled keys |
| Costs | Processor, conversion and possible payout fees | No processor percentage fee, but hosting, network and engineering costs |
| Main risk | Account review, freezes, policy changes or provider discontinuation | Security, backups, uptime and recovery failures |
What crypto gateway fees really include
Separate the advertised processor fee from the full cost of accepting payment:
- Percentage and fixed transaction charges.
- Conversion spreads and exchange fees.
- Blockchain network or Lightning costs.
- Withdrawal, bank-payout and destination-wallet charges.
- Refund-related network fees or exchange-rate losses.
- Hosting, monitoring, plugins, support and engineering.
- Compliance reserves or account-review costs.
For example, a 0.5% mono-currency service fee is not comparable to a 2% + $0.25 processor fee until conversion, network and payout assumptions are stated.
How to choose
- Need automatic USD or bank settlement? Start with BitPay, Stripe (if eligible) or Coinbase Business.
- Already use Stripe? Evaluate Stripe stablecoin payments first.
- Need many assets, links, subscriptions or donations? Compare NOWPayments.
- Want Bitcoin self-custody? Choose BTCPay Server if you can operate infrastructure.
- Need authorization, capture, webhooks and reconciliation at scale? Assess Coinbase Payment Acceptance.
- Need a conventional ecommerce plugin? BitPay or NOWPayments are the more direct starting points.
Refunds, failed payments and compliance
Questions to answer before launch
- Are partial refunds supported, and must refunds return to the original wallet?
- Who pays a second network fee, and what happens if the asset price changes?
- How are underpayments, overpayments, expired invoices and late confirmations resolved?
- What happens when a customer uses the right token on the wrong network?
- Are duplicate webhooks retried safely and mapped to one order?
- Can the provider freeze funds or place an account under review?
- Which merchant and customer countries, industries and assets are restricted?
- What KYC, beneficial-owner, AML and sanctions checks apply?
Blockchain irreversibility is not the same as absence of business risk. Fraudulent orders, stolen funds, sanctions exposure, wrong-wallet refunds, account holds and delivery disputes remain possible. A provider’s compliance program does not remove the merchant’s own legal obligations.
Tax, accounting and settlement questions
Decide how your business will record revenue, exchange rates, retained-crypto cost basis, sales tax or VAT, processor fees and refunds. Reconcile each order with the provider report and on-chain transaction. Ask whether downloadable reports include the asset, network, conversion rate, fees, refund and settlement identifiers. Obtain advice from an accountant familiar with digital assets rather than treating a gateway report as tax advice.
Implementation checklist
- Verify merchant-country, customer-country and industry eligibility.
- Complete business and beneficial-owner verification.
- Connect the bank account or merchant wallet and document who controls keys.
- Select exact assets and networks; disable options you cannot support.
- Set quote duration, confirmations, exchange-rate and expiration rules.
- Configure authenticated webhooks and map pending, paid, failed, refunded and underpaid states.
- Write customer-facing instructions for network selection and refund addresses.
- Export a sample accounting and reconciliation report.
- Test successful payments, underpayments, overpayments, wrong networks, expired invoices, duplicate webhooks, refunds and delayed confirmations.
- Document backups, monitoring, incident response and account-review contacts.
Other options
CoinGate is another hosted multi-asset processor worth evaluating, but comparable current information on its pricing, availability, settlement and integration depth was not sufficient to rank it above these five. See its merchant product and commercial policy. Coinbase’s PPRO partnership is more relevant to qualified payment platforms and acquiring infrastructure than to a typical small store (announcement).
The Bottom Line
For most businesses that want a managed checkout and fiat settlement, start with BitPay. Choose Stripe for stablecoins inside an existing U.S. Stripe stack, NOWPayments for broad multi-asset flexibility, BTCPay Server for Bitcoin self-custody, and Coinbase for enterprise stablecoin APIs. Confirm eligibility, total fees, network support, refund behavior and account policies before accepting a live customer payment.
