Meta announced on January 6, 2025, that UFC president and CEO Dana White had been elected to its board of directors alongside Exor CEO John Elkann and technology investor Charlie Songhurst. Meta said the new directors would add expertise as it pursued artificial intelligence, wearables and “the future of human connection.”
The appointment was also politically conspicuous because of White’s close public association with Donald Trump. That context matters, but Meta did not say White was chosen to influence content moderation, win regulatory favor or create a UFC–Meta business deal.
What Meta actually announced
Meta’s investor-relations release used the word “elected,” although headlines commonly described the move as an appointment. All three men joined Meta’s formal board, not an advisory panel or operating team. Contemporary coverage said the additions brought the board to 13 directors, including CEO and chairman Mark Zuckerberg, at the time of the announcement.
Meta’s governance page later listed White as having served since December 2024. The clearest way to reconcile the dates is to distinguish the public announcement on January 6, 2025, from the service date recorded in Meta’s governance materials.

Why Dana White could be useful to Meta
White has led the UFC as president and CEO since 2001, according to his Meta board biography. The UFC is part of TKO Group Holdings, the publicly traded sports-and-entertainment company created through the UFC–WWE combination.
White is not presented as an artificial-intelligence engineer. His potentially relevant expertise is commercial and audience-focused:
- Growing a personality-driven brand across international markets.
- Running live events and distributing sports media.
- Developing commercial partnerships and new revenue opportunities.
- Turning fan engagement into a global entertainment business.
That background can complement technical and investment expertise on a technology-company board. Zuckerberg said the three directors would bring “expertise and perspective” as Meta pursued AI, wearables and new forms of human connection. White said he viewed social media and AI as the future and was interested in building brands. Those statements describe broad strategic value, not a specific product assignment.
The Trump connection and Meta’s political timing
White has been a prominent Trump supporter. He spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention and at Trump’s election-night rally, and he appeared in Trump’s first TikTok video, according to contemporaneous reporting by TechCrunch.

The board announcement came amid other moves widely read as bringing Meta closer to the incoming Trump administration. Meta had appointed Joel Kaplan as its policy chief, and on January 7, 2025—the day after announcing the directors—it published changes described as “More Speech and Fewer Mistakes” to its fact-checking and political-content approach. Meta’s policy announcement is available at about.fb.com.
That timing makes political interpretation reasonable, but it does not establish motive. No cited source shows that Trump personally requested White’s seat or that politics was the primary reason for it. Meta’s stated rationale was the directors’ experience and perspective, while White’s commercial record supplies a separate, nonpolitical explanation.
Who were the other new directors?
John Elkann
Elkann is CEO of Exor and executive chair of Ferrari and Stellantis. His background adds experience overseeing large, globally operating companies, capital allocation and industrial businesses. That is a different skill set from White’s sports-media expertise.
Charlie Songhurst
Songhurst is a technology investor and former Microsoft general manager and head of global corporate strategy. His work included partnerships and mergers and acquisitions involving companies such as Yahoo and Skype. TechCrunch reported that he had also advised Meta executives on AI through an advisory group before joining the board.

The three appointments therefore should not be treated as a single political bloc. White carried the clearest political symbolism; Elkann and Songhurst brought more conventional corporate, investment and technology experience.

A director helps oversee the company, evaluates major strategy and management decisions, and fulfills fiduciary responsibilities. A board seat does not make White a Meta executive or give him day-to-day control over Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Reality Labs or content policy.
Meta’s governance page lists White as a member of the Risk & Strategy Committee. It does not assign him responsibility for AI, wearables or moderation. Committee service indicates where board oversight is organized; it does not create operational authority.
Zuckerberg also remained chairman and retained majority voting control through Meta’s dual-class share structure, according to contemporary coverage. Adding directors therefore did not mean he was surrendering control of the company.

The announcement also did not announce a UFC–Meta streaming agreement, advertising partnership or product integration. Any such arrangement would require separate evidence.
What changed after the January 2025 announcement?
Meta later announced that Stripe co-founder and CEO Patrick Collison and Dina Powell McCormick would join the board effective April 15, 2025. That announcement continued to list White as a director: Meta’s April 2025 release.
In January 2026, Meta announced that Powell McCormick would leave the board to become Meta’s president and vice chairman: Meta’s January 2026 announcement. As of the Meta governance page reviewed for this article, White remains listed as a board member and Risk & Strategy Committee member.
What investors and readers should take from the move
White’s election was a real change in Meta’s corporate governance and a conspicuous signal about the company’s interest in influential consumer brands and its evolving political environment. The evidence supports describing him as a sports-and-entertainment operator serving in board oversight. It does not support saying he controls moderation, directs Meta’s AI strategy, was selected by Trump or guarantees a commercial relationship between Meta and the UFC.
