The ten options below are pathways to investigate—not a national ranking. Program length, cost, practical training, certification eligibility, licensing and local job prospects vary by provider and location.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) uses “short-term” for occupations that typically require one month or less of combined on-the-job experience and informal training to reach competency; “moderate-term” means more than one month and up to 12 months. Those categories describe training typically needed for an occupation, not the duration of a school course. Apprenticeships are a separate earn-while-you-learn route that BLS says usually lasts three to five years. BLS explains its education and training categories.
10 short-term career training programs to investigate
These options appear in catalogs from Job Corps, Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), Frederick Community College and Dallas College. Their listings show examples of training offered by those providers; they do not establish that every program is available nearby, enrolling now or offered in the same format everywhere.

2. Phlebotomy technician
Phlebotomists collect blood for tests, transfusions, research or donation. Job Corps lists this pathway, and HACC lists a noncredit phlebotomy course. Ask how much supervised practice the course includes and whether it prepares you for a credential or exam that local employers recognize. Job Corps healthcare training areas; HACC workforce development courses.
3. Clinical medical assistant
Medical assistants combine clinical and administrative duties in healthcare settings. Job Corps lists the training area, and BLS says the occupation typically requires a postsecondary nondegree award. For U.S. medical assistants, BLS reports a 2024 median annual wage of $44,200 and projects 13% employment growth from 2024 to 2034. These are national occupation figures, not a graduate’s expected starting pay or a school’s placement result. BLS medical assistant outlook; Job Corps healthcare training areas.

4. Dental assistant
Dental assistants support examinations and related administrative work. Job Corps lists dental assistant training, while BLS identifies a postsecondary nondegree award as typical for entry. State rules can limit which duties an assistant may perform, so check permitted duties and any required credentials where you plan to work. BLS reports a 2024 national median annual wage of $47,300 and projects 6% growth from 2024 to 2034. BLS dental assistant outlook; Job Corps healthcare training areas.
5. Emergency medical technician (EMT)
EMTs provide emergency care to people who are ill or injured. Job Corps lists EMT training. Verify the state certification process, required exams and practical training before choosing a course; completing a class alone may not authorize you to work. Job Corps healthcare training areas.

6. Commercial driver’s license (CDL) truck-driver training
HACC lists noncredit CDL courses. Compare the license class and endorsements covered, behind-the-wheel hours, testing arrangements and any employer requirements. Confirm which costs—such as licensing tests or equipment—are included in the course price. HACC workforce development courses.
7. Welding
HACC and Dallas College list welding training. This hands-on trade can differ substantially by process and credential, so ask which welding methods the course covers, how much lab time it provides, and what safety preparation and assessments are included. HACC workforce development courses; Dallas College workforce training.
8. HVAC technician
Frederick Community College lists HVAC among its short-term training areas. Check whether a program includes practical lab work and prepares students for applicable refrigerant-handling certification. Ask which credentials it covers and what additional steps are needed to qualify for work in your area. Frederick Community College short-term training.
9. Bookkeeping
HACC lists bookkeeping as a workforce training option. Ask which accounting software and practical tasks are covered, such as recording transactions or reconciling accounts. Also check how employers nearby assess entry-level applicants; a course listing alone does not establish hiring outcomes. HACC workforce development courses.

10. Entry-level IT certification training (CompTIA)
HACC lists CompTIA IT certification training among its workforce courses, while Frederick Community College lists technology and cybersecurity training. A course title is not enough to estimate the time, cost or job-readiness involved. Ask each provider for the details below, then compare offers on the same basis.
- Time and schedule: Request total instructional, lab and clinical hours; calendar length; attendance rules; and any supervised practice required after the course. Do not infer duration from the phrase “short-term.”
- Credential and regulation: Confirm the exact credential awarded or exam the course prepares you to take. Check state or local requirements, scope-of-practice limits and whether employers accept the credential.
- Hands-on learning: For healthcare and trade paths, ask about supervised practice, clinical placements, lab equipment and safety instruction.
- Full cost: Request an itemized total for tuition, fees, books, exams, equipment and transportation. Include any unpaid clinical or internship time in your budget. The provider catalogs cited here do not supply comparable prices across all ten options.
- Outcomes and fit: Ask for completion and employment data for the relevant cohort, how outcomes are counted, and whether local employers hire people with that training. Consider whether the role matches your physical, schedule and customer-contact preferences.
What national wage and growth figures can—and cannot—tell you
BLS figures describe occupations across the United States, not the likely results of a particular course or an individual graduate. For the occupations with figures cited here, BLS’s February 2026 article reports 2024 median annual wages and projected employment change for 2024–34:
| Occupation | 2024 U.S. median annual wage | Projected employment growth, 2024–34 |
|---|---|---|
| Medical assistants | $44,200 | 13% |
| Phlebotomists | $43,660 | 6% |
| Dental assistants | $47,300 | 6% |
These are national occupation statistics from BLS, not starting salaries, wage guarantees or program placement rates. Job Corps also displays national average annual wage figures for some training-area occupations, including certified phlebotomy technician ($43,660), clinical medical assistant ($44,200) and dental assistant ($47,300). Those figures are not presented as starting wages for Job Corps graduates. BLS healthcare occupations; Job Corps healthcare training areas.
