A dependable SUV can save more than the occasional repair bill. Fewer breakdowns mean fewer missed work hours, less reliance on rental cars, and a better chance of keeping the vehicle long enough to avoid another round of purchase and financing costs.
The list below weighs repair frequency, average annual repair and maintenance costs, long-term mileage evidence, and whether the SUV is reasonably affordable to maintain after its warranty ends. The figures are averages across available model years, not promises about a particular vehicle. A well-maintained used SUV can be a better financial decision than a brand-new model with limited reliability history.
How these SUVs were evaluated
RepairPal data is useful for comparing repair patterns and average annual costs, but its figures combine unscheduled repairs and maintenance across model years. They are not the same as a manufacturer’s scheduled-maintenance estimate. iSeeCars’ 250,000-mile projections provide a separate measure of long-term durability, although they also describe groups of vehicles rather than an individual SUV.
Model-year changes matter. A 2026 redesign may carry the same name as a proven 2025 model while using a new engine, hybrid system, or electronics package. Older reliability statistics should not automatically be applied to it.

1. Honda CR-V
The CR-V is the strongest all-around choice for a buyer who wants a practical compact SUV without an unusually large maintenance budget. RepairPal rates it 4.5 out of 5 and places it second among 26 compact SUVs. Its reported average annual repair and maintenance cost is $407, with about 0.3 unscheduled shop visits per year and a 9% probability of a severe repair.
Its predicted 10.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles is 2.5 times the SUV average in the iSeeCars study. That combination of low annual cost, common parts, strong resale demand, and broad independent-shop familiarity makes the CR-V particularly attractive to cost-conscious owners.
The 2026 CR-V is offered with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine or Honda’s two-motor hybrid system, and the lineup adds a TrailSport Hybrid trim. Because that trim and its equipment mix are new, buyers should not treat older CR-V reliability data as conclusive proof for every 2026 configuration.
2. Mazda CX-5
The CX-5 is a good fit for buyers who want a more polished driving experience while staying outside luxury-brand repair pricing. RepairPal rates it 4.5 out of 5 and ranks it first among 26 midsize SUVs. Its $447 average annual repair and maintenance cost is below the midsize-SUV average of $573, while its reported repair frequency and severity are also favorable.
Inspect the brakes carefully on a used CX-5. RepairPal lists premature rear-brake wear and caliper-related complaints among reported problems. That does not mean every model year has the defect, but it is a reason to check brake thickness, rotor condition, and recall completion before buying.
3. Toyota RAV4
The RAV4 remains one of the safest financial bets among compact SUVs because of its low repair frequency, strong resale value, and plentiful parts and service options. RepairPal reports $429 in average annual repair and maintenance costs, roughly 0.3 unscheduled visits per year, and a 4.0 out of 5 rating that places it third among compact SUVs.
iSeeCars estimates a 7.3% chance of the gas model and 7.9% chance of the hybrid reaching 250,000 miles. For a used purchase, the 2020–2025 generation has the most relevant durability history.

Be cautious about applying that record to the 2026 RAV4. It is an all-new generation with new hybrid and plug-in-hybrid systems. A first-year redesign may eventually prove excellent, but it does not yet have the same depth of real-world evidence.

The Venza is worth considering if you want a quiet, efficient, upscale-feeling crossover and are comfortable buying used. The 2024 model was hybrid-only, included standard electronic on-demand all-wheel drive, and had a manufacturer-estimated 39 mpg combined rating. RepairPal reports an average annual cost of $444 in the available data.
The Venza’s main financial drawback is availability: 2024 was its final listed U.S. model year. That can limit selection and may make certain body or interior parts less common over time. Have a used example inspected for reported false factory-alarm activation and VVT-i oil-line leaks, and check the VIN for open recalls.
5. Toyota Highlander Hybrid
For families that need three rows, the Highlander Hybrid offers a more manageable fuel bill than a conventional large SUV without abandoning Toyota’s established hybrid architecture. iSeeCars gives it a 31.0% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, ranking it third among all vehicles and third among SUVs in its 2025 longevity study.
RepairPal reports an average annual cost of $489 for the Highlander across model years and rates the 2025 Highlander 4.0 out of 5. The 2026 Highlander remains available with gas and hybrid powertrains, and the hybrid is rated at up to 35 mpg combined depending on trim.
The longevity result is encouraging, but it is based substantially on older vehicles. It should not be read as a guarantee that every battery, inverter, sensor, or other component in a current model will last 250,000 miles.
6. Lexus RX Hybrid
The RX Hybrid is a reasonable option when comfort and quiet operation matter but you still want a better long-term ownership outlook than many luxury SUVs provide. iSeeCars estimates a 17.0% chance of an RX Hybrid reaching 250,000 miles, compared with 10.7% for the RX overall.

- Material Upgrade: The new windshield sunshade for 2026 provides more sun protection and shade. We abandoned the old-fashioned titanium silver coating design and chose 300T Oxford cloth with higher density as the raw material for the sunshade. It can effectively block sunlight and heat, allowing you to enjoy the coolness and tranquility inside the car in the scorching summer.
- Practical Performance: We focus on the practical performance of car sunshades in terms of shading and insulation, striving to bring tangible improvements to your driving experience. In the hot summer, it can reduce the impact of strong sunlight on car seats, dashboard and other components, allowing you to feel a cooler atmosphere when entering the car or driving, reducing discomfort caused by stuffiness.
- Size Options: Our car sun shade windshield are available in three sizes: Medium: 55.12 x 27.6 inches - suitable for most compact cars, Large: 57.08 x 31.5 inches - suitable for most SUVs, XL: 63 x 33 inches - suitable for most SUVs and small truck.
- Ordering Tip: Before placing an order, please carefully measure the size of your windshield to ensure that the product fits snugly. If you are unable to measure and confirm, you can provide us with your vehicle model via email, and we will recommend the appropriate size for your vehicle model as soon as possible.
- Quick Installation: The installation of this car sun shade is very simple. Method 1: You can use the elasticity of the visor and put it directly in front of the car windshield. Method 2: You can also use the two sunshades that come with the original car to press and fix it. It takes you only a few seconds to install and is truly easy to use.
Cost remains the compromise. RepairPal reports $550 per year for the RX350, while Lexus vehicles average $551 across its database. The 2026 RX 350h uses all-wheel drive, produces a 246-horsepower net system rating, and has a manufacturer-estimated 36 mpg combined rating.
Budget for premium tires, dealer or specialist labor, advanced-driver-assistance sensors, air-conditioning components, and expensive interior electronics. Reliable luxury is not the same as inexpensive luxury.

7. Toyota 4Runner
The 4Runner earns its place through durability evidence and rugged construction, not low running costs. iSeeCars estimates a 32.9% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, making it the second-longest-lasting vehicle overall and second-longest-lasting SUV in its study.
RepairPal reports $514 in average annual repair and maintenance costs and rates the model 4.0 out of 5. But its body-on-frame design, large tires, higher fuel consumption, and off-road hardware can make routine ownership more expensive than a CR-V or RAV4.
For the deepest reliability history, look at a 2024-or-earlier model. The 2025 4Runner began a sixth generation, and the 2026 model uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with an available i-FORCE MAX hybrid system. The long-standing V6 record should not be used as proof that the new turbocharged models will perform identically over decades.
8. Honda Pilot
The Pilot is a practical family choice for buyers who need three rows but want to avoid luxury-brand repair rates. iSeeCars estimates a 13.1% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, ranking it sixth among SUVs in its study. RepairPal reports $542 in average annual repair and maintenance costs.

It is still more expensive to operate than a compact SUV. Three-row body hardware, larger tires, brakes, suspension parts, and greater vehicle weight all raise replacement costs. RepairPal lists warped front brake rotors causing braking vibration as the most commonly reported Pilot problem in its database, so a test drive should include firm braking from several speeds.

9. Acura RDX
The RDX is among the more defensible compact luxury SUVs for long-term ownership. RepairPal rates it 4.5 out of 5 and ranks it first among 11 luxury compact SUVs. Its reported average annual cost is $497, and severe repairs are described as uncommon.
Its 7.2% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles is above the 4.3% SUV average in the iSeeCars study. However, the RDX still carries luxury ownership costs: turbocharged-engine service, premium tires, electronic features, and Acura labor rates can quickly erase its advantage over a mainstream compact SUV.
10. Acura MDX
The MDX provides three-row luxury transportation with relatively moderate repair costs for its class. RepairPal rates it 4.0 out of 5 and ranks it second among 14 luxury midsize SUVs. It reports $571 in average annual repair and maintenance costs, about 0.4 unscheduled shop visits per year, and an 8% probability of a severe repair.

What to check before buying a reliable used SUV
A reliability ranking narrows the search; it does not replace an inspection. The individual vehicle’s maintenance history can matter more than a one-position difference in a national ranking.
- Run the VIN. Check the manufacturer’s recall portal and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration database for open safety recalls.
- Verify service records. Look for documented oil changes, transmission or differential-fluid service, coolant service, and hybrid-system maintenance where applicable.
- Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. A $150–$300 inspection can identify leaks, worn suspension parts, accident repairs, tire mismatch, brake problems, or warning codes before you commit thousands of dollars.
- Check the tires and brakes. A set of tires can cost roughly $600 to more than $1,500, and larger SUVs may need brakes, tires, and suspension work sooner than compact crossovers.
- Obtain insurance quotes before purchase. Repair costs are only one part of ownership. Collision coverage, theft rates, premiums for driver-assistance sensors, registration, and fuel can materially change the monthly budget.
- Compare total cost, not just the sale price. Include financing interest, depreciation, fuel, insurance, scheduled service, repairs, and likely replacement items over the years you expect to keep the SUV.
Reliable SUVs that need qualification
Some frequently recommended SUVs deserve a more careful explanation:
- Toyota Sequoia: Its 39.1% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles is exceptional, but full-size tires, brakes, fuel use, and components make it much more expensive to run than a compact SUV.
- Subaru Forester: It may be a strong choice for standard all-wheel drive and winter conditions, but RepairPal rates it 3.5 out of 5, ranks it 21st of 26 compact SUVs, and reports $632 in average annual repair and maintenance costs.
- Toyota Corolla Cross: It is still too new for a dependable model-specific annual-cost figure. Toyota-brand averages should not be presented as Corolla Cross evidence.
Conventional hybrids also should not be rejected automatically because of battery fears. A hybrid battery is a real future repair risk, but regenerative braking can reduce brake wear and fuel savings can offset some costs. Check battery warranty terms, age, mileage, and replacement pricing for the specific model. Honda says its conventional CR-V Hybrid does not need to be plugged in; it recharges through regenerative braking and the gasoline engine.

FAQ
Which SUV is the best overall choice for low maintenance costs?
The Honda CR-V is the strongest general-purpose choice in this comparison. RepairPal reports $407 in average annual repair and maintenance costs, a 4.5/5 reliability rating, and about 0.3 unscheduled shop visits per year. A well-maintained Mazda CX-5 or 2020–2025 Toyota RAV4 is also a strong alternative.
Is a Toyota 4Runner cheap to maintain?
Not necessarily. The 4Runner has unusually strong long-term mileage evidence, including a 32.9% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, but its fuel, tire, brake, and body-on-frame component costs are higher than those of a compact crossover. It is durable rather than inexpensive in every ownership category.
Are hybrid SUVs more expensive to own long term?
Not automatically. Hybrid fuel savings and reduced brake wear can help offset the cost of hybrid components. However, battery age, warranty coverage, inverter repairs, and model-specific replacement costs should be considered before buying. A hybrid longevity statistic is not a guarantee against a costly battery or electrical repair.
What is the most important reliability check on a used SUV?
The vehicle’s documented maintenance history and an independent pre-purchase inspection are usually more useful than a small difference in ranking. Confirm oil and fluid service, inspect brakes and tires, scan for diagnostic codes, verify recalls by VIN, and check for accident or flood damage.
The Bottom Line
For the best balance of low repair costs and long-term ownership potential, start with the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, or a well-maintained 2020–2025 Toyota RAV4. The used Toyota Venza is worth considering for efficient hybrid transportation, while the Highlander Hybrid offers one of the strongest longevity records for families needing three rows.
The 4Runner and Sequoia illustrate an important distinction: a vehicle can be exceptionally durable without being cheap to operate. And while the 2026 RAV4 and 2025–2026 4Runner may eventually prove reliable, their redesigns do not yet have the established history of the generations they replaced. Before buying any SUV, price the insurance and fuel, verify maintenance records, run the VIN, and pay for an independent inspection.
