On the most recent comparable measure, the Sports IP Revenue League’s 2026 report, the ten largest revenue-generating league ecosystems for 2025 are the NFL, NBA, MLB, Premier League, NHL, F1, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Serie A and Ligue 1. The ranking is about leagues and competition properties, not ten separate sports, and it measures revenue, not profit or what athletes earn. The sections below explain what the list includes, how to read it, and where the same money shows up differently in other rankings.
How this ranking is built
“Most lucrative sport” can mean several different things: total revenue for a league or event, the value of media rights, operating profit, athlete pay, or the value of a team as a business. Those figures use different boundaries and cannot be merged into one table. The most consistent current comparison is the Sports IP Revenue League’s 2026 report, which annualizes its figures to 2025, converts them to US dollars, and counts revenue at the point it first enters the sports intellectual-property ecosystem.
The report also removes internal transfers such as league distributions, participation fees and player transfers, so the same money is not counted twice. Central revenue generally includes media rights and league-wide sponsorship. Team-level revenue generally includes matchday income and local sponsorship. Because the figures are aggregated across each ecosystem, a league’s total can include money that clubs or franchises later distribute among themselves.

The two $4.7 billion figures are tied at the precision the report publishes, so the ranking shows them as a tie rather than ordering them. All figures are 2025 revenue as reported in the 2026 edition.

What the list does and does not tell you
Leagues, not sports
The list mixes sports and competitions. Five of the ten entries are European football leagues, so association football as a sport accounts for more of the list than any single entry suggests. Yet the revenue is split across competitions, which is why no single football league appears above the NFL. Ranking the sport as a whole requires a different dataset, covered below.
The North American entries
The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL are franchise leagues whose revenue depends heavily on domestic broadcast contracts, league-wide sponsorship and team-level income. The four together account for a large share of the top ten, which reflects how those leagues package national media rights, not a difference in how the numbers are calculated.

F1 in the list
F1 is a championship run as a calendar of races in several countries rather than a league with fixed home teams. Its place in the table reflects its commercial ecosystem, including its media, sponsorship and hospitality income, under the same method used for the other entries.
Soccer’s share of the sports economy
The same Sports IP Revenue League report says soccer properties captured 27% of sports IP revenues in 2025, and that team ball sports accounted for 70% of that market’s revenue. Those percentages apply to the report’s defined “Sports IP” market. They are not a measure of the entire global sports economy, which includes ticketing, betting, equipment and local events that the report does not count in the same way.

Revenue is not profit, pay or valuation
A high revenue figure does not mean a league is the most profitable or that its players earn the most. Those are separate measures, and two other sources illustrate how different they can be.
Houlihan Lokey’s Sports Market Update (Fall 2024) estimates global association-football media-rights revenue at about $19 billion. It estimates the NFL’s media-rights property value at about $12 billion per year, and the English Premier League and NBA at about $4 billion each. These are estimates of rights value, not total league revenue, so they cannot be read against the table above as if they were the same measure.

Standard Chartered’s April 2025 report, The investment case of sports franchises, discusses team valuations separately from revenue and operating income. Its valuation estimates are as of 2024 and are based on the previous season’s revenue and operating income. A team’s valuation is a business price, not a stand-in for the sport’s annual income.

FIFA reports total revenue and other income of $2,661.404 million for 2025. The four categories above sit beside other revenue and other income. FIFA recognizes revenue in the year an event is delivered, so a tournament-heavy year can differ sharply from a quieter one.
Checklist for comparing “most lucrative” claims
- Check the unit: sport, league, competition, team, or individual media-rights property.
- Check the metric: revenue, media-rights value, operating income, athlete pay or franchise valuation.
- Check the year and currency. The Sports IP Revenue League figures are 2025 values in US dollars.
- Check whether central and team revenue are combined.
- Check whether internal transfers have been removed, which prevents double counting.
- Check whether a one-off event, such as a tournament, drives the year’s total.
Bottom line on the ranking
For 2025 revenue across league ecosystems, the NFL leads, followed by the NBA and MLB, with the Premier League the top football entry. Treat this as a ranking of commercial ecosystems. If you need a different answer, such as the richest sport overall or the most valuable media rights, you will need a measure built for that question.
