The exact ten wallets and their ranking in a December 2024 article titled “Top 10 Best Cryptocurrency Wallets” cannot be verified from the available contemporaneous evidence. Reconstructing that list from current product pages would risk passing off newer features and rankings as historical facts. What can be established is how to assess a cryptocurrency wallet: start with who controls the keys, then check recovery, supported assets and networks, device compatibility, and transaction approvals.
Why the December 2024 top-ten list is unverified
The original article or contemporaneous material confirming its ten entries, order, and selection method has not been identified. Current vendor pages and directories cannot establish what a December 2024 ranking contained. They can help explain wallet types and offer present-day comparison points, but those details should not be backdated.
For example, Ledger’s current wallet-app comparison includes later changes: it says MetaMask added native Solana support in May 2025 and native Bitcoin support in December 2025. Those are subsequent developments, not evidence of what a wallet supported in December 2024. Ledger’s current comparison should therefore be read as a later snapshot.
What “cryptocurrency wallet” means
A wallet is part of the system used to access and authorize crypto transactions. The key distinction is whether a service manages the private keys or the user controls them.

Custodial exchange account
An exchange or other custodial service manages the keys while the customer accesses funds through an account. The platform may offer account recovery, but the customer depends on that service to manage access. Coinbase’s wallet explainer describes this distinction.
Self-custody software wallet
A self-custody wallet gives the user control of the keys through an app, browser extension, or other software interface. Coinbase’s educational page puts it this way: “If you received a recovery phrase during setup and control your own private keys, it’s a self-custody wallet.” That control also makes the user responsible for safeguarding the recovery phrase; losing it may mean no one can restore access.

Hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is a physical device used to keep signing keys offline and approve transactions. It can be used alongside compatible wallet software, rather than serving as a substitute for every app or interface. MetaMask’s help page explains that users need physical access to a connected hardware wallet to approve transactions. See MetaMask’s hardware-wallet guidance.
How to compare wallets for your needs
No single wallet is established as universally safest or best by the available evidence. A hardware device can add an offline signing step, but it cannot by itself prevent phishing, mistaken transfers, or loss of recovery material. Choose based on how you plan to use a wallet and what responsibilities you are prepared to manage.

- Key control and recovery: Determine who controls the keys and what happens if you lose access to a device, account, or recovery phrase.
- Assets and networks: Confirm support for the specific coins, tokens, and networks you intend to use. Support can vary by product and change over time.
- Devices and interfaces: Check whether the wallet works on your phone, computer, or browser, and whether it supports the hardware signer you want to use.
- Approval flow: Understand what you must review and confirm before a transaction is signed, including whether physical device confirmation is required.
- Fees and features: Check current fee disclosures and the exact features relevant to your use; do not assume that an app’s interface or a vendor comparison settles the full cost of a transaction.

Recovery material is a critical part of self-custody. Exodus describes its wallet as self-custody and says the user controls its 12-word Secret Key. Its support guidance recommends keeping the phrase private and avoiding an unencrypted digital copy. Exodus also recommends considering a hardware wallet for significant holdings; that is the vendor’s guidance, not an independent safety ranking. Read Exodus’s security advice.

Exodus says its software can pair with Ledger or Trezor hardware wallets for offline storage. That kind of arrangement combines a software interface with a separate signing device, where compatible.
