Melbourne comedian Tom Siegert said he used his household’s monthly 10% Woolies Rewards discount on a $10.80 lunch shop instead of saving it for his wife’s larger weekly grocery shop. The small purchase—salad, tuna and a soft drink—prompted a playful household disagreement and a large comment thread, according to reports published in February 2025.

Siegert described using the monthly discount when he bought lunch, rather than leaving it for his wife to use on the household’s bigger weekly shop. In a post quoted by PerthNow on 24 February 2025, he wrote: “Of all the stupid things I’ve done over the years, nothing pisses my wife off more than when I use our 10% Woolies Rewards discount when I grab something for lunch instead of leaving it for her to use on her big weekly shop. Unforgivable.”
The purchase was reported as salad, tuna and a soft drink costing $10.80. YourLifeChoices reported the same details in a follow-up published on 25 February 2025.
Why did the discount become a household argument?
The disagreement was about when to use a limited discount: on a small, immediate lunch purchase or on a larger grocery shop. A percentage discount can translate into a larger dollar saving on a larger eligible bill, so Siegert’s wife reportedly wanted it saved for her weekly shop. The February 2025 accounts described the 10% offer as usable on one shop per month. Their descriptions of who qualified differ: PerthNow described it as exclusive to Woolworths Insurance customers, while YourLifeChoices referred to customers with certain Woolworths financial or mobile products and said the discount was capped at $50.
