Tolan is an animated AI companion app from Portola, the startup that announced a $10 million seed round led by investor Lachy Groom in February 2025. Rather than presenting a blank chat window, Tolan gives users a colorful alien character, voice conversations, personality matching, relationship memory and image-based interactions.
For consumers, the important questions are less about the size of Portola’s fundraise than the app’s recurring cost, usage limits, data practices and boundaries. Tolan may appeal to people who want a playful, platonic digital companion, but it is not a therapist, a human friend, a guaranteed source of advice or a private diary.
What is Tolan?
Tolan is a conversational AI companion created by Portola. Its characters live in a fictional setting called Planet Portola and are designed as animated aliens rather than photorealistic people.
The product combines several familiar AI features into a more character-driven experience:

- Image interactions: Users can share images for practical conversations, such as discussing an outfit or ingredients in a refrigerator.
- Everyday support: The intended use cases include planning, studying, meals, venting, stress and low-pressure conversation.
Portola deliberately frames Tolan as a platonic companion rather than an AI girlfriend or boyfriend. Founder Quinten Farmer described the intended dynamic as similar to a “cool older sibling,” according to GeekWire’s launch report. That is a positioning choice—not independent evidence that Tolan produces a particular emotional or mental-health outcome.
When did Tolan launch?
Portola soft-launched Tolan on iOS in late 2024 and publicly launched it on February 26, 2025. GeekWire reported that the app had reached approximately 500,000 downloads by the launch announcement. The same report said the company had about 10 employees and more than $1 million in annual revenue.
Those are launch-era figures reported in February 2025. They should not be read as current 2026 download, staffing or revenue numbers, and downloads are not the same as active subscribers or paying users.
Who founded Portola?
The reported founding team includes:
- Quinten Farmer: CEO and former co-founder and CEO of Even.
- Evan Goldschmidt: CTO and former founding engineer and CTO at Even.
- Ajay Mehta: President.
Farmer and Mehta have Seattle-area ties. Even, the founders’ previous company, was acquired by Walmart in 2022 in a transaction reported at approximately $300 million. GeekWire’s account of that history helps explain why Portola’s team had experience building and scaling a consumer technology product, although prior startup experience does not establish that Tolan will be profitable or safe for users.

Portola raised a $10 million seed round led by Lachy Groom to support the launch and further development of Tolan. Reported backers included Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, Amjad Masad, Mike Krieger and David Luan, among others.
The funding was venture investment—not an acquisition, a revenue figure or a disclosed valuation. Public reporting does not establish Portola’s valuation, ownership dilution, runway or a detailed breakdown of how the money will be spent. Investor interest shows that backers see a business opportunity in AI companionship; it does not prove that Tolan is more useful, accurate or emotionally beneficial than other AI products.

Why use an alien instead of a normal chatbot?
Portola’s product thesis is that many AI companions lack a strong visual identity, storytelling, character and thoughtful relationship design. An animated alien gives Tolan a recognizable personality without trying to imitate a real human.
The design also serves several practical purposes:
- It can feel more like a digital pet or character than an ordinary productivity assistant.
- A fictional avatar may be less uncanny than a photorealistic human.
- A playful alien identity supports the app’s non-romantic positioning.
- Animated conversations are easier to share on social platforms.
These are design goals and positioning claims, not measured proof of better emotional support. The underlying language-model technology has not been fully disclosed in the available launch coverage, so it is more accurate to describe Portola as building a companion product and relationship layer around generative-AI and voice technologies—not as a company confirmed to have trained its own foundation model.
How much does Tolan cost?
The U.S. App Store currently lists Tolan as a free download with in-app purchases. Portola’s FAQ says subscriptions can be managed through the app’s settings.
GeekWire reported launch-era prices of $4.99 per week, $10 per month or approximately $70 per year in February 2025. Those figures are historical and should not be treated as definitive August 2026 pricing. App subscriptions can vary by country, currency, device, introductory offer and account history. Check the live in-app paywall before subscribing.
That distinction matters financially. A weekly plan priced near $5 can cost more than $250 over a year if it renews continuously, while an annual plan may appear cheaper but commits the user for longer. Before starting a trial or subscription, check:
- The renewal price and billing frequency.
- What the free tier includes.
- Whether voice minutes, messages or image interactions are capped.
- Whether “boosts” or other usage allowances cost extra.
- How to cancel and whether cancellation must be completed through Apple.
- Whether a trial automatically converts to a paid plan.
AI companions often require recurring revenue because voice processing, model inference, storage and moderation create ongoing costs. A subscription may therefore be central to Tolan’s business model. It is not, however, automatically good value compared with a general-purpose AI service.

Does Tolan limit how long users can talk?
GeekWire reported that Tolan could send a message after roughly an hour of conversation suggesting that the user sign off, while allowing the user to override the prompt. Portola presented the feature as an attempt to encourage healthier connection.
A sign-off prompt is a wellness nudge, not proof of safety. It is also different from a hard usage cap. The current app may use different limits or paid allowances, so users should check the live product rather than assume that the launch behavior still applies.
Tolan should not be used as a substitute for professional mental-health care. In a crisis, or when dealing with self-harm, abuse, medication, serious illness or an immediate safety risk, contact an appropriate human professional or emergency service.
Privacy: what should users know?
Privacy is central to evaluating Tolan because the app is designed to remember personal conversations and may process voice and images. Portola’s Terms of Service say user inputs may be stored and used to provide and develop the service, including improving AI models.

That means users should not assume that a conversation with Tolan is equivalent to a confidential journal or a conversation with a licensed professional. Review Portola’s Privacy Policy for the current details on conversation data, voice recordings, images, analytics, purchases, third-party providers, deletion and model-improvement practices.
The U.S. App Store privacy disclosure says the developer may collect or link categories including purchases, location, identifiers, usage data and other data. Apple notes that these developer disclosures have not been independently verified by Apple.

Information not to share casually
- Passwords, authentication codes or financial-account details.
- Exact home, school or workplace locations.
- Highly sensitive medical, legal or employment information.
- Private images of other people without their consent.
- Personal information about children or vulnerable individuals.
Image analysis can be wrong, and a remembered detail can be outdated or incorrect. Verify advice about food safety, health, medication, relationships, money or legal matters with a reliable human or authoritative source.

Launch coverage described Tolan’s early audience as predominantly female and Gen Z, with users sharing interactions on TikTok. GeekWire cited one TikTok post with more than 9 million views. That is a social-media performance claim from the reporting period, not evidence of total active users, and it does not mean the app is designed only for women or Gen Z.
Tolan may be a fit for people who:
- Prefer voice and animation to a text-only chatbot.
- Want a platonic alternative to romantic AI-companion products.
- Enjoy digital pets, fictional characters and playful world-building.
- Want low-pressure conversation while cooking, walking or getting ready.
- Would use image-based help for outfits, meals or organization.
It may be a poor fit for anyone seeking professional counseling, guaranteed factual answers, a fully free assistant or strong confidentiality for intimate conversations. Parents and educators should separately review age suitability, data handling and available account controls before allowing children or teenagers to use it; the available material does not establish that Tolan is safe for children.
Tolan compared with other AI products
The most defensible difference is product positioning, not a proven advantage in the underlying AI. Current pricing, features and platform availability can change, so consult each company’s own materials before paying.

For a meaningful comparison, look beyond the avatar. Compare monthly and annual cost, free-tier limits, voice access, memory behavior, image support, romantic or platonic framing, privacy terms, age restrictions, parental controls, platform availability and cancellation procedures.
Is Tolan worth paying for?
Tolan’s appeal depends on whether its character design and relationship layer make conversation more engaging for you than a conventional assistant. The app’s colorful aliens, voice interaction and platonic framing are meaningful product choices. The $10 million seed round explains how Portola is financing the product, but it does not establish consumer value.
