EE Times’ April 22, 2024 video, “TIRIAS Research Analysts Talk Intel Vision 2024,” features TIRIAS Research principal analysts Jim McGregor and Francis Sideco discussing Intel’s Gaudi 3 announcement and its place in the data-center AI accelerator competition. It is an analyst discussion, not a hands-on product test: the available video description does not establish that the analysts tested Gaudi 3.

What the analysts discuss

EE Times frames the conversation around what Intel is bringing to AI competition, with particular attention to Gaudi 3 and enterprise data-center accelerators. The available description identifies the speakers and subject but does not provide a transcript or detailed account of their arguments, so it cannot support attributing specific conclusions to either analyst.

Read EE Times’ video listing.

Gaudi 3’s announcement and launch are separate milestones

Intel introduced Gaudi 3 at Intel Vision in Phoenix on April 9, 2024, positioning the accelerator for AI training and inference, including large language and multimodal models. Intel described an approach built around open, community-based software and standard Ethernet networking. The company later recorded a separate product launch on September 24, 2024; the announcement at Vision and the launch should not be treated as the same event.

Intel’s later materials identify enterprise system providers, offering historical context for the product ecosystem. They do not establish current inventory, pricing, support terms or availability. See Intel’s Gaudi 3 announcement and Intel’s September 2024 launch materials.

How to read Intel’s Gaudi 3 performance figures

Intel’s 2024 announcement compares Gaudi 3 with its predecessor, Gaudi 2, on three specific measures:

Metric Intel’s published comparison What the figure does—and does not—show
BF16 AI compute 4x versus Gaudi 2 An Intel-published comparison for this metric; not an independently verified overall performance result.
Memory bandwidth 1.5x versus Gaudi 2 An Intel-published comparison for memory bandwidth; it does not by itself establish end-to-end model performance.
Networking bandwidth 2x versus Gaudi 2 An Intel-published comparison for networking bandwidth; it is not a direct comparison with competing accelerators.

These figures should not be paraphrased as “four times faster” overall or as proof that Gaudi 3 outperforms Nvidia or AMD products. The published ratios use Gaudi 2 as their comparator, and the cited announcement does not independently validate them or provide an apples-to-apples competitor benchmark. The figures and Intel’s positioning are in Intel’s April 2024 announcement.

What matters in an accelerator comparison

A useful comparison depends on the deployment, not just a headline compute ratio. Match the conditions before drawing conclusions:

  • Workload and model: Compare the same model and task, and distinguish training from inference.
  • Precision and batch assumptions: Results can depend on numerical precision and batch size, so check that both sides use comparable settings.
  • Memory: Consider capacity as well as bandwidth; either can constrain a model or affect throughput.
  • Networking and scale: A single accelerator’s specifications do not describe how a multi-accelerator cluster performs. Check interconnect, cluster size and scaling methodology.
  • Software and migration: Account for the software stack, workload compatibility and engineering effort needed to move an application.
  • Deployment economics: Compare system-level cost, availability and energy use, not just accelerator specifications.
  • Evidence quality: Identify who produced each result and the test methodology. A vendor’s comparison and an independently measured benchmark are different kinds of evidence.

This checklist is a practical way to evaluate claims; it is not a list of test results from the analysts’ video. Intel executive vice president and then-general manager of its Data Center and AI Group Justin Hotard said enterprises weigh “availability, scalability, performance, cost, and energy efficiency.” That is a vendor executive’s description of buyer considerations, not an independent survey. Intel’s announcement attributes the statement to Hotard.

What this video can tell a prospective buyer

The listing establishes that two TIRIAS Research principal analysts discussed Gaudi 3’s competitive significance after Intel’s Vision announcement. It does not, by itself, establish benchmark results, present-day system availability or a purchasing recommendation. For a procurement decision, use current vendor documentation and system quotes, then compare the intended workload under equivalent conditions.
