A report says Amazon plans to expand its U.S. same-day fulfillment network to more than 1,000 locations by 2031, but that target is not confirmed by an accessible original report or an Amazon announcement. Amazon has disclosed a U.S. network of more than 85 Same Day Fulfillment Centers and broader same-day service in more than 9,000 cities and towns; its separate announcement of more than 1,000 micro-fulfillment centers refers to Amazon Now in India.
What is Amazon’s reported 1,000-center plan?
The Plain Record reported on September 16, 2026, that Amazon planned to expand its U.S. same-day fulfillment network to more than 1,000 locations by 2031, citing internal documents. The article could not be retrieved, and Amazon has not publicly confirmed that U.S. target in the material available. Treat it as a reported plan, not a company commitment.
Amazon’s disclosed U.S. baseline is more than 85 Same Day Fulfillment Centers, stated by CEO Andy Jassy in his 2025 shareholder letter, published in 2026. The letter said those centers carried Amazon’s top 90,000 SKUs and had enabled more than 500 million same-day units in 2026 “thus far.” That disclosure describes the network at the time of the letter; it does not establish a plan to reach 1,000 sites.
Why the “1,000 centers” figure is easy to misread
Amazon has announced a figure above 1,000 for a different service and country. On June 17, 2026, Amazon India said it planned to expand Amazon Now to 100 cities with more than 1,000 micro-fulfillment centers in India. The announcement also covered plans for more than 100 larger Urban Fulfillment Centers. Those are India plans, not evidence of a 1,000-center U.S. same-day network.

Amazon’s U.S. releases distinguish its broad Same-Day Delivery service from Amazon Now, a faster offering. The center counts, service areas and customer terms should not be combined as if they described one network.

How to check whether fast delivery could replace a store run
- Enter or confirm your delivery address in Amazon’s storefront. Availability is address-dependent, even within a city where a service is offered.
- Search for the items you need and check the delivery options shown for each eligible product. A service’s general city coverage does not mean every item qualifies.
- Compare the promised arrival time with your need: Same-Day Delivery is a same-day option, while Amazon Now was described as about 30 minutes or less in its May 2026 announcement.
- Review your Prime status, order threshold and any delivery or small-order charges displayed at checkout. The published terms may differ from the rates or minimums shown for your address.
- For fresh groceries, confirm that grocery delivery is offered for your location and that the specific products are available in the delivery window you select.
How Amazon says it gets orders closer to customers
The basic approach is to position inventory closer to the people ordering it, so an item can travel less distance before last-mile delivery. Amazon describes several formats rather than one universal type of “center.”
Same Day Fulfillment Centers
These U.S. sites stock high-demand products for quick order processing. Amazon’s 2025 shareholder letter said its more than 85 U.S. Same Day Fulfillment Centers carried its top 90,000 SKUs.

Smaller Amazon Now sites
Amazon said U.S. Amazon Now orders would be served from smaller sites near where customers live and work. That format supports the service’s much shorter delivery promise, but Amazon Now is distinct from general Same-Day Delivery.
Hybrid hubs for smaller and rural communities
In a June 2025 U.S. announcement, Amazon described converting some existing delivery stations into hybrid hubs that hold inventory and prepare orders for last-mile delivery. The company said it planned to expand Same-Day and Next-Day service to more than 4,000 smaller cities, towns and rural communities by the end of 2025, alongside a $4 billion investment to triple the size of its delivery network by the end of 2026. These were dated targets, not a confirmation that all milestones were met.

Amazon also described using demand forecasting to select local inventory. The point of these formats is to place suitable products nearer to customers; a larger site count alone would not tell a shopper what is available at a particular address.

- Amazon said in February 2026 that Same-Day Delivery was available in more than 9,000 U.S. cities and towns. That is a measure of service coverage, not a count of fulfillment centers.
- In August 2025, Amazon said fresh-grocery Same-Day Delivery reached more than 1,000 U.S. cities and towns, with a plan to exceed 2,300 by year-end. Those figures describe city coverage and a dated target, not facilities.
- Amazon reported that more than 13 billion items arrived the same or next day globally in 2025. In the U.S., Prime members received more than 8 billion same- or next-day items, up more than 30% year over year; groceries and everyday essentials accounted for half of the U.S. total. These are company-reported delivery figures, not a count of centers.
What the unconfirmed target means for shoppers
A larger local fulfillment network could support quicker delivery and a wider range of nearby items, but the reported 1,000-site target does not establish when a particular ZIP code will gain a service, which items will qualify or what delivery will cost. For a decision about whether to make a store run, the useful facts are the delivery promise, product availability and final charges Amazon shows for your own address and cart.
