The “new Shopping tab” headline refers to a TikTok announcement from August 24, 2021—not a new feature launched in August 2026. TikTok and Shopify were piloting a Shopping tab for selected Shopify merchants in the United States and United Kingdom, with Canada included in the rollout plan. Eligible businesses could sync a Shopify catalog, display a storefront on their TikTok profile and tag products in organic videos. In the original setup, shoppers generally left TikTok to pay on the merchant’s own website.
That pilot was an early social-commerce step. The later TikTok Shop, launched fully in the United States on September 12, 2023, added a broader marketplace, in-app checkout, LIVE and video shopping, affiliate tools and order-management features.
What the 2021 Shopping tab actually was
TikTok announced an expanded Shopify partnership and a pilot called TikTok Shopping on August 24, 2021. The feature attached a Shopping tab to eligible business profiles rather than turning every TikTok account into a store.
A participating merchant could synchronize products from Shopify and present them in a mini-storefront on its TikTok profile. The merchant could also attach product links to ordinary, organic TikTok posts. That connected entertainment and creator-led discovery with a catalog a viewer could browse.

TikTok described the idea as a way for brands and creators to help people discover products through content and community. The announcement is available from TikTok’s newsroom.
Who could use it?
The pilot was limited. It was aimed at:
- Merchants operating a Shopify store.
- Businesses with a TikTok For Business account.
- Selected businesses in the pilot markets, initially the United States and United Kingdom, with Canada included in the rollout plan.
Contemporary coverage described the tab as limited to qualifying Shopify sellers, not a universal consumer feature. Availability depended on market, account type, eligibility and rollout status; an ordinary personal profile could not simply add the tab.
How shopping worked in the original pilot
The historical user journey was a discovery-to-external-checkout flow:
- Open an eligible merchant’s TikTok business profile.
- Select its Shopping tab.
- Browse the synchronized product catalog.
- Choose a product.
- Follow the product link to the merchant’s online store.
- Complete payment and checkout on that merchant site.
Product tags in videos followed the same basic principle: TikTok supplied discovery and the product link, while the merchant’s store handled the transaction. TechCrunch reported the external-checkout distinction in its coverage of the pilot: TikTok expands Shopify partnership.

Why external checkout mattered
A product link did not mean TikTok was handling every part of the purchase. In the 2021 model, the merchant remained responsible for the online store, payment process, inventory, fulfillment, refunds and customer support. The handoff also added a step that could create friction between seeing a product and completing an order.
For shoppers, the destination domain and the seller’s policies mattered. For merchants, catalog synchronization had to keep titles, images, prices, variants and inventory accurate across systems.
TikTok Shopping versus TikTok Shop

These are different stages of TikTok’s commerce strategy, not interchangeable names for one unchanged feature.
What changed with the U.S. TikTok Shop launch
On September 12, 2023, TikTok announced the full U.S. launch of TikTok Shop. Its launch materials described a marketplace with a Shop tab, shoppable videos, LIVE shopping, Product Showcase pages, creator affiliate commissions, Shop Ads, native order and checkout functions, Fulfilled by TikTok logistics and integrations with Shopify and other commerce platforms. That later product is much closer to an in-app marketplace than the 2021 pilot. Names, menus, seller requirements, checkout behavior and availability can still differ by country and account. A Shop tab visible to one user is not proof that the same interface is available everywhere.
What shoppers should check before buying
TikTok’s presence does not by itself guarantee a seller’s quality or reliability. Before paying, check:
- The seller’s identity and whether the account appears official.
- Product specifications, reviews and variant details.
- Shipping estimates and the delivery region.
- Return, refund and cancellation terms.
- The payment destination and whether an external checkout remains on a recognizable merchant domain.
In the older Shopify pilot, the merchant’s own store handled the transaction. In current TikTok Shop experiences, TikTok may provide native checkout, but the exact protections and responsibilities depend on the market, seller and applicable policies.
What merchants and creators should know
Shopify-connected selling
Shopify merchants can use TikTok integrations to connect an existing catalog and commerce operation. Shopify’s current plan information is at shopify.com/pricing. Buying a Shopify plan does not automatically guarantee access to every TikTok Shop feature; seller approval, region, product category and integration requirements still apply.

Native TikTok Shop selling
Merchants seeking a marketplace presence can review the U.S. seller portal at seller-us.tiktok.com. TikTok Shop can centralize listings, orders, promotions and creator-affiliate relationships, but it also brings marketplace policies, operational duties and potentially changing fees. No single current fee should be assumed without checking TikTok’s official terms.
Creator affiliates
Creators can earn commissions by recommending products through TikTok Shop. Rates vary by seller, product, campaign and market, so affiliate income is performance-based rather than a guaranteed sponsorship payment. Creators remain responsible for making accurate product claims and protecting audience trust.
Advertising and operations
TikTok’s business entry point is TikTok for Business. Paid promotion can expand reach, but advertising is auction-based and requires dependable inventory, conversion tracking and tested creative. Whether selling through an external store or TikTok Shop, merchants still need processes for fulfillment, returns, customer service, tax and compliance.

- No Shopping or Shop tab: The account, market or seller may not be eligible, or the feature may not be enabled for that rollout.
- Products missing: Catalog synchronization, inventory, product data, variants or policy review may be blocking publication.
- Wrong price or stock: A synchronization delay can leave TikTok and the store temporarily out of step.
- Unexpected destination: Check the product link and domain before entering payment information.
- Weak conversion: An external-store handoff introduces more friction than native checkout.
The labels “Shopping tab,” “TikTok Shopping,” “Shop tab,” “Shopping Center” and “TikTok Shop” have been used for related but not identical products and regional implementations.

How the feature evolved
The 2021 pilot established a bridge from short-form content to a merchant catalog. TikTok later expanded that bridge into marketplace infrastructure built around videos, livestreams, creators, advertising and fulfillment. In a June 2025 update, TikTok said its U.S. seller ecosystem covered more than 750 categories and more than 70 million products. Those are TikTok’s own company-reported figures, not independently audited market totals; the update appears in TikTok Shop is where shoppers come to discover.
For current availability, use TikTok’s regional documentation and seller requirements rather than assuming that a 2021 feature description matches today’s app.
The Bottom Line
The “new Shopping tab” was a genuine August 24, 2021 pilot for selected Shopify merchants—not a new August 2026 launch and not universal in-app checkout. The modern successor is TikTok Shop, whose U.S. launch on September 12, 2023 added a broader marketplace and native commerce tools.
