A March 2022 TikTok reportedly showed a Walmart employee replacing salad-dressing shelf labels marked $2.24 with labels marked $7.88. The clip became a point of discussion about inflation and price gouging, but the reporting does not establish why the label changed—or whether the prices were for a comparable product.
Which TikTok video is the story about?
The title does not identify a creator or date, so the closest reported match is a video by Shawn Connor, who posts as @devious_love. The Daily Dot reported on March 10, 2022, that the clip showed a Walmart employee changing salad-dressing shelf labels from $2.24 to $7.88. This is a likely match, not a uniquely confirmed identification.
The report says the video’s comments debated inflation and price gouging. Its framing does not establish that price gouging occurred, and it does not give Walmart’s reason for the label change.

The Daily Dot described the video as showing the label change and those two displayed prices. The figures are the report’s account of what appeared in the clip; they are not independently verified transaction prices.

What remains unknown
The report does not establish the product’s brand or package size, the store’s location, when each price applied, or whether the two labels referred to the same item. It also does not establish what caused the change. The clip therefore cannot, on its own, prove either an inflation-driven adjustment or price gouging.
How inflation figures fit the conversation
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 7.9% over the 12 months ending February 2022. In the same period, food-at-home prices rose 8.6%; they also increased 1.4% in February 2022 on a seasonally adjusted monthly basis. These are national index figures, not measurements of the Walmart shelf labels in the video.

The CPI tracks average price changes across a broad basket of goods and services. A national food-at-home increase can help explain why grocery prices were a subject of concern in early 2022, but it cannot confirm a particular store’s prices, show that the compared products were identical, or identify why a retailer changed a label. Those questions require product, location, timing, and pricing information that the report does not provide.

The most supportable reading is narrower: a TikTok reportedly displayed a sharp change between two salad-dressing labels, and viewers discussed inflation and price gouging against a backdrop of rising national grocery prices. The available reporting does not settle the cause of the change or substantiate the accusation.
