Three pre-owned Speedmasters stand out for different reasons: the classic manual-wind Moonwatch, the smaller automatic Speedmaster Reduced, and the newer-generation Moonwatch with calibre 3861. They are not interchangeable versions of the same watch: size, movement design and technical features differ. The right choice depends on which trade-offs matter to you—and on the condition and history of the individual watch.

At a glance: three different Speedmaster choices

Buyer priority Watch Movement and winding Size and defining details
Classic Moonwatch format Speedmaster Professional 3570.50 Calibre 1861; manual-wind 42 mm Professional format; Hesalite crystal, according to Watches.co.uk
Smaller case and automatic winding Speedmaster Reduced Automatic; confirm the exact movement in the specific listing Typically 38–39 mm, with a thicker case profile and different dial proportions than the Professional, according to Watches.co.uk
Newer Moonwatch generation Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, reference 310.30.42.50.01.001 Calibre 3861; manual-wind 42 mm; Co-Axial, Master Chronometer certified and METAS approved, according to OMEGA

These are reference points, not guarantees about every watch advertised under a model name. Check the exact reference and configuration before comparing features.

1. Speedmaster Professional 3570.50: the classic pre-owned Moonwatch

The 3570.50 is a documented pre-owned Moonwatch example powered by calibre 1861 and fitted with a Hesalite crystal. Watches.co.uk describes it as a recognizable Professional choice produced in large numbers. Its appeal is the familiar manually wound Moonwatch format, rather than automatic convenience or the newer calibre 3861 specification.

Watches.co.uk’s guide describes the Speedmaster name as having been used continuously since 1957, while emphasizing that it does not mean a single, uniform watch. That history is a reason to shop by exact reference, not by the Speedmaster name alone.

  • Model 310.30.42.50.01.002

2. Speedmaster Reduced: the compact automatic

The Reduced is the size-and-winding alternative. Watches.co.uk gives its typical case diameter as 38–39 mm, compared with 42 mm for the cited Professional models. It is automatic, but it is not simply a smaller Moonwatch with identical mechanics: its movement architecture, thicker case profile and dial proportions differ.

Because the Reduced encompasses specific references and movement details that can vary by example, ask the seller for the exact reference and movement rather than relying on the model nickname. Try it on if possible: diameter alone does not establish how the case thickness or proportions will sit on your wrist.

3. Calibre 3861 Moonwatch: a newer technical generation

For buyers who want a more recent Moonwatch generation, OMEGA’s current steel-on-steel Moonwatch Professional product page specifies reference 310.30.42.50.01.001. It lists a 42 mm case and manual-winding calibre 3861. OMEGA says the movement is Co-Axial, Master Chronometer certified and METAS approved, with resistance to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss and a 50-hour power reserve.

Those specifications describe the current product-page reference, not every pre-owned 3861 watch or a particular used listing. Moonwatch configurations can differ in crystal and caseback; verify the exact reference and configuration before treating a feature as included.

How to choose between them

  • Choose the 3570.50 if you want the classic 42 mm manual-wind Professional format and the documented calibre 1861/Hesalite combination.
  • Choose the Reduced if a typically 38–39 mm case and automatic winding matter more than matching the Professional’s movement architecture and proportions.
  • Choose a 3861-generation Moonwatch if you want a 42 mm manual-wind Moonwatch with the newer movement specifications OMEGA lists for the exact reference.
  • Compare fit in person where possible. Case diameter is only one part of wear; thickness and dial proportions also affect how a watch feels and looks.

What to check before buying pre-owned

Verify the identity and configuration

Ask for the full reference and clear photographs of the dial, case, caseback and movement documentation available to the seller. Match the advertised crystal, movement and other features to that exact reference. A model-family name is not enough to establish what is fitted.

Understand condition, originality and service history

Ask when the watch was last serviced, who performed the work, and which parts were replaced or retained. Request an account of any polishing, restoration or other work. For vintage examples, Watches.co.uk advises checking for period-correct parts and signs of over-polishing or restoration. Watches sharing a reference can still differ substantially in wear, maintenance and originality.

Box and papers can provide reassurance, but their absence alone does not prove a watch is problematic, and they do not replace a condition and mechanical assessment.

Calculate the full ownership cost

Compare the asking price alongside any likely service needs and the seller’s return and warranty terms. OMEGA publishes a service and pricing page, but a specific service total for these suggested references is not established here. Ask OMEGA or a qualified specialist for a current quote for the exact watch and your location.

Before relying on a price, verify the exact reference, condition, originality, service history, geography and live listing.
