Re:

Three Food Editors Named the Same Best Canned Tuna: Safe Catch

Three food editors named Safe Catch as their shared canned-tuna pick, but the recommendation is preference—not a documented taste test—and the article gives no current price.

In a Simply Recipes article published August 6, 2026, three food editors named Safe Catch as their shared canned-tuna pick. That is a reported preference—not the result of a blind taste test or a comprehensive comparison. For shoppers, the useful caveat is price: the article says Safe Catch costs about twice as much as most grocery-store brands, but gives no dated price or can size.

Why the editors chose Safe Catch

The editors’ reasons were personal preferences, not a published scoring system. Megan Scott, Simply Recipes’ senior editor, said she reaches for Safe Catch at Costco rather than Kirkland. Jennifer Zyman, Food & Wine’s commerce testing editor, said she usually buys Safe Catch. Stacie Billis, a food editor and podcast host, recommended it to people concerned about mercury and said she particularly liked the water-packed variety’s flavor.

The article characterizes Safe Catch as a low-mercury, sustainable option and reports that the brand tests every tuna for mercury. It also says its tuna and salmon products are Marine Stewardship Council certified, are Ocean Wise Partners, and follow Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch recommendations. Those statements are claims reported by the article; the information available here does not independently establish the testing details or verify the organizations’ certifications and recommendations.

Safe Catch versus Fishwife and Kirkland

Brand What the article says What it does not establish
Safe Catch The three editors’ shared pick. Scott says she buys it at Costco; Billis favors the water-packed variety. A blind-test win, comparative taste scores, verified mercury measurements, current price, or specific can size.
Fishwife Zyman’s choice when she wants a treat or splurge. A consensus recommendation or a direct comparison against Safe Catch.
Kirkland Scott says she reaches for Safe Catch instead. The article includes Kirkland among the less expensive grocery-store brands. A head-to-head test or an exact price comparison.

The article’s broad price comparison is not enough to calculate what you would pay today: it provides no observation date, pack size, or specific prices. Check the shelf or retailer listing and compare the price per ounce for the products you are considering.

How to use the recommendation

  • Want the editors’ shared pick? Start with Safe Catch, but treat it as an interview-based recommendation rather than a proven winner in a controlled comparison.
  • Choosing by price? Compare the actual package prices and price per ounce where you shop; the article’s “about twice” description is not a current price quote.
  • Prefer water-packed tuna? Billis specifically praised Safe Catch’s water-packed variety, based on her stated flavor preference.
  • Looking for a splurge? Zyman named Fishwife as her treat-yourself option, not as the group’s shared pick.
  • Buying because of mercury or sustainability claims? The article reports those reasons and brand claims, but supplies no numeric mercury results or independent verification. Do not treat the recommendation as individualized dietary or medical guidance.
