Three Altcoins to Understand After the 2025 Crypto Market Shift

The 2025 crypto market declined overall, so a five-token “bull market” ranking would overstate the evidence. Here are three altcoins with documented functions and a practical framework for assessing them.

2025 was not a straightforward altcoin bull market: total crypto market capitalization declined over both the first quarter and the full year. The available evidence supports explaining three assets—ETH, SOL and LINK—but not a defensible ranking of five. Here is what each does, what the dated market signals do and do not show, and how to assess an altcoin without treating utility as a price forecast.

Was 2025 an altcoin bull market?

Not across the year as a whole, based on the market-cap figures cited here. CoinGecko reported that total crypto market capitalization fell 18.6% in the first quarter of 2025, ending the quarter at $2.8 trillion. Bitcoin dominance—the share of total crypto market capitalization represented by Bitcoin—was 59.1% at quarter-end. In its 2025 Q1 Crypto Industry Report, CoinGecko also attributed a substantial share of Solana’s quarter activity to meme-coin trading.

For the full year, CoinGecko reported a 10.4% decline in total crypto market capitalization, to $3.0 trillion at year-end. At the same time, stablecoin market capitalization grew by $102.1 billion, or 48.9%, during 2025, reaching $311.0 billion. Those figures describe different parts of the market: stablecoins grew while the total crypto market’s capitalization fell. They do not establish that altcoins broadly rose. See CoinGecko’s 2025 Annual Crypto Industry Report.

What does “altcoin season” mean?

It is a relative-performance label, not a promise that every asset other than Bitcoin is rising. Coinbase Research reported a common definition as “when at least 75% of the top 50 altcoins by market cap outperform BTC over the preceding 90 days.” That is a reported convention, not a universal standard. In its August 2025 outlook, Coinbase put the cited Altcoin Season Index in the low 40s, below that 75 threshold. It also reported Bitcoin dominance falling from 65% in May to about 59% by August. These are Coinbase’s snapshots from August 2025, not current readings; the index measures relative performance while dominance measures market-cap share. Market leadership can change over time. Coinbase Institutional’s December 2024 outlook described Bitcoin dominance increasing from 52% at the beginning of 2024 to 62% in November, interpreting spot exchange-traded funds as a demand anchor for BTC and ETH. That is Coinbase’s historical account and interpretation, not proof of what caused later market moves or a forecast for another cycle. Coinbase Institutional’s 2025 Crypto Market Outlook provides that context.

Three altcoins with documented functions

These are three assets with functions described in the cited primary documentation, not a performance ranking or a claim that they were the best investments of 2025. The evidence available here does not support selecting two more assets on comparable terms, so this article does not invent a top five.

Asset What the network or project says it does What that does—and does not—tell an investor
ETH (ether) Ethereum’s cryptocurrency. Users pay transaction fees in ETH; it is also used in staking and as collateral or a unit of account in parts of the ecosystem. Network use can create demand for transaction fees, but activity on Ethereum does not guarantee that ETH will appreciate. Competition and how activity translates into demand for the asset matter. SOL Solana’s cryptocurrency. Solana’s documentation describes programs as its smart contracts and accounts, instructions and transactions as core network concepts. CoinGecko reported that Solana represented 39.6% of on-chain spot decentralized-exchange trades in Q1 2025. CoinGecko noted that meme-coin trading influenced activity in that period; a single quarter’s trading share does not establish durable adoption or future SOL demand. Sources: Solana’s core concepts documentation and CoinGecko’s Q1 report.
LINK Chainlink says LINK pays for oracle services, compensates service providers and supports network security. Chainlink states that the token’s total supply is capped at one billion. Use of oracle services and value accruing to LINK holders are separate questions. Project-described service utility does not by itself show how much adoption translates into token demand or price. Ethereum is the network; ether, or ETH, is its cryptocurrency. That distinction matters: a network can be useful without every form of network activity flowing proportionally to the value of its token. The same general caution applies to SOL and LINK. Project documentation can establish a stated function, but it cannot establish investment performance.

How to compare altcoins without chasing hype

A shortlist becomes meaningful only when every candidate is assessed on the same evidence. Before treating a token as a serious possibility, check:

  • Use case: What does the network or service do, and what specific role does the token play? Separate a project’s technical function from the token’s economic role.
  • Adoption evidence: Look for dated measures of usage and identify what they count. Trading volume, transactions, users and paying customers are not interchangeable; a short burst of activity may not persist.
  • Token economics: Check supply, issuance, unlock schedules and who can sell or influence the supply. A stated maximum supply alone does not explain circulating supply or future selling pressure.
  • Liquidity: Consider whether the asset can be bought or sold in the relevant market without large price impact, and whether the data covers the exchanges and period that matter to you.
  • Risks and control: Examine competition, technical or governance risks, and how concentrated decision-making or token ownership may be. Identify a credible reason the project or token could disappoint.
  • Comparable dates: Put market metrics on the same time window before comparing assets. A project’s official description explains its claims; independent, dated activity data is needed to evaluate adoption.

For ETH, SOL and LINK, the sources cited above establish specific functions, but they do not provide a complete, comparable analysis of all these investment factors. A five-token list without that common method would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.

Self-custody is a separate decision from choosing a token

If you hold crypto yourself, Ethereum.org says a hardware wallet keeps private keys offline. That can reduce exposure to some online risks, but it does not prevent every scam, mistake or investment loss. A recovery phrase can grant access to the associated accounts, so anyone who obtains it may be able to control the funds. Read Ethereum.org’s security and scam-prevention guidance before choosing a custody setup.
