Thousands of Norwegian Eurojackpot players were reportedly sent notifications showing far larger prizes than they were entitled to receive. Norsk Tipping said a manual currency-conversion error multiplied euro-denominated prizes by 100 instead of dividing them by 100. The figures in the mistaken messages were not the amounts ultimately paid.
What happened to the Eurojackpot notifications?
In a report published June 30, 2025, PerthNow said Norsk Tipping, Norway’s state-owned lottery operator, had notified several thousand Eurojackpot players of excessively high prizes. The company reportedly declined to confirm an exact number of affected customers. PerthNow’s account described the messages as incorrect prize notifications—not proof that recipients had won or been paid the sums displayed.
How did the conversion error inflate the amounts?
Norsk Tipping’s reported explanation was that euro-denominated prizes received from Germany were converted to Norwegian kroner incorrectly: the amounts were multiplied by 100 rather than divided by 100. That reversal would make the converted figures 10,000 times the correct conversion result, assuming the same starting amount and conversion basis. The report does not explain the software or workflow involved, what controls were in place, or how the error passed review; its account of the cause should therefore be understood as the operator’s reported explanation, not a published technical postmortem.
What did players actually receive?
Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), as cited by PerthNow, reported one customer received a notification showing 1.2 million kroner. She ultimately received only a small fraction of that figure. The report does not give her actual payout, so the notification amount should not be described as money she won or received.

How did Norsk Tipping and the government respond?
Chief executive Tonje Sagstuen apologized, saying: “I am terribly sorry that we have disappointed so many, and I understand that people are angry with us.” PerthNow reported that Sagstuen stepped down after the company’s board met with the Ministry of Culture.
After meeting the company, Minister of Culture and Equality Lubna Jaffery said the board was expected “to work actively to improve the control routines” and that “such mistakes should not happen.” These statements signaled immediate pressure for stronger controls, but they do not establish what specific changes were made.

What remains unknown?
PerthNow reported that Norsk Tipping was investigating, but its June 30, 2025 account did not provide final findings. It also did not establish an exact affected-customer count, the total value of incorrect notifications, a full technical explanation, or any subsequent regulatory action. No conclusion about those matters can be drawn from the reported incident alone.
