Verizon may advertise a new iPhone as free or nearly free, but the discount usually depends on your plan, trade-in, financing term and willingness to remain eligible for monthly credits. This guide is for existing U.S. Verizon postpaid customers upgrading an existing line—not just new customers adding service.
The best offer is the one with the lowest verified total cost, not necessarily the largest advertised phone discount.

1. Check your upgrade eligibility—and your remaining balance
Verizon separates several forms of eligibility that are easy to confuse:
- Upgrade eligibility: Whether the line can purchase a replacement phone.
- Device-payment eligibility: Whether Verizon will finance the new device.
- Trade-in eligibility: Whether your current iPhone qualifies for value.
- Promotional eligibility: Whether your account, plan, device and trade-in qualify for the maximum advertised credits.
- Early-upgrade eligibility: Whether a specific program can settle some or all of the old phone’s balance after you return it.
To check your account, sign in to My Verizon, open the relevant mobile line, and select the device or upgrade section. Review:

- The old iPhone’s remaining device balance.
- Whether the line is upgrade-eligible.
- Whether an early-upgrade option is available.
- The promotions shown specifically for your account.
- The price and trade-in value for the exact iPhone model and storage capacity you want.
Being allowed to buy a new phone does not prove that you qualify for a “free iPhone” promotion. Verizon says offers can be targeted and may depend on the account, line, plan, trade-in device and promotion terms. A generic deal shown in an advertisement may be a new-line offer rather than an existing-line upgrade.
What if your current iPhone is not paid off?
With a standard upgrade, you may need to pay the remaining device balance before keeping the old phone or completing the trade-in. Verizon’s upgrade guidance describes options that can include paying off the balance and keeping the phone, or—where available—paying it off and trading it in.
An early-upgrade program is different. It may settle the remaining balance only after you meet its payment threshold and return the qualifying phone in acceptable condition. Verizon does not automatically pay off every financed iPhone for every customer.

“Free” usually means the device installment is offset by monthly promotional bill credits. The credit is not normally an instant reduction at checkout, and Verizon commonly spreads it over as long as 36 months. Credits may stop if you cancel service, change to an ineligible plan or otherwise stop meeting the offer’s conditions. Future credits are not generally paid out in advance.

Before accepting an offer, read Verizon’s device-deal terms for the exact model and account. Confirm:
- The required plan and whether changing plans affects existing discounts.
- Whether the offer is for an upgrade or a new line.
- The device-payment term and monthly installment.
- The monthly credit and total credit period.
- Whether the old phone must have been active on Verizon for 60 consecutive days.
- The trade-in deadline and condition requirements.
- What happens to the credits if you leave Verizon or pay off the phone early.
Some promotions accept damaged devices, but that is offer-specific. Do not assume a cracked iPhone receives the maximum value. Verizon’s stated good-working-condition requirements for relevant programs generally include powering on and off, having no cracked screen or significant damage, and disabling password-protected security features such as Find My iPhone.
Trade-in checklist
- Back up and transfer your data.
- Sign out of your Apple Account and iCloud where required.
- Turn off Find My iPhone and Activation Lock.
- Erase all content and settings.
- Remove the physical SIM, if applicable.
- Photograph the phone’s condition, serial number and IMEI.
- Keep the shipment receipt and tracking number.
- Confirm Verizon received and accepted the device.
- Check later bills for the promised credits.
A return can fail if the IMEI does not match the submitted phone, Activation Lock remains enabled, the device arrives after the deadline, the screen or back glass is cracked, there is water or corrosion damage, the phone does not power on, or the shipment is lost without tracking evidence. Verizon’s early-upgrade terms provide the applicable condition rules.

3. Calculate the total cost—not just the phone payment
The relevant comparison is the cost of your service plan and device over the full credit period. Use this formula:

Net phone cost per month = phone installment − monthly promotional credit
Extra plan cost = (new plan price − current plan price) × 36For example, a plan that costs $15 more per month adds $540 over 36 months, before taxes and other charges. That extra service cost can outweigh a phone discount that appears generous.
Also check sales tax, surcharges, any required down payment and Verizon’s one-time upgrade fee. Verizon’s general upgrade FAQ says a fee may apply when changing to a device with a new SIM on an existing line. Verizon’s Simplicity marketing page says activation and upgrade fees are extinct, so verify the amount shown at checkout for your specific plan and purchase channel rather than relying on a universal rule.
Save screenshots or a PDF of the offer showing the device installment, credit, qualifying plan, trade-in value and duration. This is especially important when the promotion is targeted to your account.

Verizon’s early-upgrade programs are not the same as an ordinary trade-in. They add recurring costs and impose payment, plan and return requirements.

Simplicity, Simplicity Plus and Simplicity Pro
As of August 18, 2026, Verizon advertises the Simplicity plan at $45 per line per month with Auto Pay and paper-free billing, or $55 without that discount. Its public marketing page also displays a possible $15 Switch & Save discount, resulting in a displayed $30 price under stated conditions. Taxes and fees are additional. Availability and eligibility can vary.
The plan includes unlimited data, talk and text, 5G Ultra Wideband access, 10GB of hotspot data, Mexico and Canada talk, text and data, satellite texting, Call Filter, Verizon Family and Verizon Dollars. Switching from an older plan can affect existing discounts or perks.
Verizon’s current terms list:
- Simplicity Plus: $35 per month for eligible smartphones priced from $350 to $830.
- Simplicity Pro: $50 per month for eligible smartphones priced from $830.01 to $1,200.
Both generally require the Simplicity plan and a qualifying 36-month device-payment agreement. They can allow up to two upgrades in a rolling 12-month period, but the customer generally must have paid at least 33% of the device balance and return the phone in good working condition. The phone must usually be returned within 30 days. You may make an extra payment to reach the 33% threshold.
The add-on can offset device-installment costs under the program’s rules, but it is not the same as free ownership. You continue paying the recurring subscription and remain responsible for the new device agreement and service charges. Review the program FAQ and legal terms before enrolling.

Flex Upgrade
Verizon’s official pages currently show inconsistent pricing for Flex Upgrade: its FAQ lists $15 per month, while the legal terms list $10 per month as the standalone price. Eligibility also depends on the plan and device. Confirm the amount displayed in your My Verizon account and save the enrollment terms before accepting it.
These programs are most useful for someone who upgrades frequently and expects to remain on the required Verizon plan. They are a poor fit if you upgrade rarely, dislike recurring add-on charges, want to own the phone outright, or may switch carriers soon.

Apple also offers carrier-financing paths, including Verizon device payments on eligible purchases. Compare Apple’s exact trade-in value with Verizon’s offer; neither is automatically the better deal.
A phone bought elsewhere may work on Verizon, but it generally will not qualify for Verizon’s device-promotion credits or early-upgrade program unless the purchase and financing satisfy that program’s conditions. Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program, Apple Trade In and Verizon’s early-upgrade programs are separate arrangements with different ownership, financing, upgrade and cancellation rules.
Before you place the order
- Exact iPhone model, storage capacity and retail price.
- New monthly device payment and promotional credit.
- Credit duration, usually up to 36 months.
- Required plan and any lost discounts or perks.
- Whether the offer is an existing-line upgrade or new-line promotion.
- Trade-in value, condition requirements and deadline.
- Remaining balance on the old iPhone.
- Taxes, surcharges and any activation or upgrade fee.
- Early-upgrade subscription cost, if applicable.
- What happens to the balance and credits if you change plans or cancel.
Wait if your current iPhone works well, you are near the end of its payment term, the promotion requires a substantially more expensive plan, the phone is damaged, or the offer requires an unnecessary line or bundled device. In each case, keeping your current phone or buying independently may produce the lower total cost.
