ThinkGeek.com’s standalone online store was scheduled to close on July 2, 2019, with a curated selection of its merchandise moving to GameStop.com. That was not the same as continuing the full ThinkGeek shopping experience: GameStop described a smaller selection inside its broader retail site. The change marked the end of a distinctive online destination for geek and pop-culture merchandise, even as the company said its U.S. physical stores would remain open at the time.
What happened to ThinkGeek.com?
On June 14, 2019, TechCrunch reported the announcement posted in ThinkGeek’s FAQ: “On July 2nd, 2019, ThinkGeek.com will be moving in with our parent company GameStop. After this move, you will be able to shop a curated selection of unique items historically found on ThinkGeek.com via a ThinkGeek section at GameStop.” TechCrunch’s June 14 report reproduced the company’s wording.
So, if you are asking “Is ThinkGeek shutting down?”, the precise answer is that the standalone ThinkGeek.com store was ending, while a curated ThinkGeek section at GameStop was announced. It was not an announcement that every ThinkGeek-branded activity would cease on July 2. GameSpot reported on June 28 that the 40 U.S. physical stores would remain open at that point; that is a statement about the status announced in 2019, not evidence of their present-day status. GameSpot’s June 28 report covers the store announcement.
Why the change felt bigger than a website move
ThinkGeek was not just a place to find licensed merchandise. Its identity was bound up in being a dedicated destination for goods chosen for a geek and pop-culture audience. GameStop’s fiscal 2018 filing described ThinkGeek as serving the global geek community with exclusive and unique video-game and pop-culture products; contemporary coverage also identified apparel and collectibles among its categories. GameStop’s fiscal 2018 filing describes the business and its merchandise.

A curated section in a much broader retailer could preserve some products without preserving that destination experience. That distinction is why the change can reasonably feel like a loss to customers who valued ThinkGeek’s particular assortment and identity. It is an editorial interpretation, not a measured claim about how all customers felt: no representative survey or published statistic establishes the closure’s cultural impact.
What GameStop said about the move—and the financial context
GameStop framed the transition as a way to streamline ThinkGeek’s ecommerce operation by bringing it into GameStop’s omnichannel platform. In a June 14, 2019 report, Game Developer quoted GameStop CEO George Sherman: “We have very successful collectibles business and need to harness the power of the team and the investment made in that team going forward.” Game Developer’s report contains the statement.

There was also financial context. GameStop’s fiscal 2019 Form 10-K said lower-than-expected profitability of the ThinkGeek website, along with the decision to exit wholesale, led to a fiscal 2018 impairment of $5.9 million related to customer-relationship intangible assets. That figure is an accounting impairment, not ThinkGeek’s sales, the value of the whole business, or a measure of customer sentiment. The filing offers context, but does not establish that this item alone caused the 2019 site transition. GameStop’s fiscal 2019 Form 10-K describes the impairment.
Separately, GameStop said in an August 29, 2019 announcement about its redesigned website that customer feedback indicated GameStop.com had become increasingly difficult to use. That is relevant background on the retailer’s ecommerce challenges, but the announcement did not identify it as the reason for moving ThinkGeek. GameStop’s site announcement gives that context.

The transition FAQ, as reported by TechCrunch on June 14, 2019, said ThinkGeek gift cards would be honored at GameStop online and in stores. It also said return requests would be accepted for orders placed before June 13. These were arrangements announced for the 2019 transition; they are not current customer-service promises. TechCrunch’s report records the terms.

The historical record establishes that ThinkGeek.com’s standalone store was scheduled to move into GameStop on July 2, 2019, and that a curated assortment was planned for a ThinkGeek section there. It also records that physical stores were said to remain open at the time. Those announcements do not establish the present status of every ThinkGeek-branded store, whether legacy inventory is available now, or whether the same online section or customer arrangements still exist.
