Some imported home goods may face U.S. tariffs, but there is no single tariff rate for “home products.” The duty on a particular item depends on its customs classification, country of origin, and any additional tariff rules or exceptions that apply. Current official measures specifically cover certain upholstered wooden furniture, kitchen cabinets and vanities; a separate measure includes certain residential HVAC systems and components.
Which home products could be affected by tariffs?
Official actions identify specific products, not entire store categories. A sofa, cabinet, vanity or HVAC component is not automatically covered just because it resembles an item named in a tariff measure. The product’s construction, customs classification, origin and applicable exceptions all matter.
| Product category | What the official measure says | Rate and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Certain upholstered wooden furniture | The White House’s September 29, 2025 timber and derivative-products proclamation covers certain upholstered wooden furniture. The product language and country exceptions govern whether an item qualifies. | 25% for covered goods during 2026 under the December 31, 2025 amendment. A 30% rate is scheduled for January 1, 2027, subject to exceptions or further changes. |
| Kitchen cabinets and vanities | The September 29, 2025 proclamation lists certain kitchen cabinets and vanities. The measure does not establish that every cabinet or vanity is covered. | 25% for covered goods during 2026 under the December 31, 2025 amendment. A 50% rate is scheduled for January 1, 2027, subject to exceptions or further changes. |
| Certain residential HVAC systems and components | A separate White House action in June 2026 modifies tariffs on listed aluminum, steel and copper articles and derivatives. It names certain residential HVAC systems and components. | A temporarily reduced 15% rate applies to the listed HVAC classifications under that measure. It is not a general rate for all HVAC equipment. |
The furniture and renovation rates come from the White House’s September 2025 proclamation and December 2025 amendment. The HVAC rate comes from the separate June 2026 metals action. The measures have different product language and exceptions, so their rates should not be treated as interchangeable.
Are kitchen cabinets and vanities subject to tariffs?
Certain ones are covered by the timber-products measure. The White House’s December 31, 2025 fact sheet said the current 25% tariff on “certain upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities” would remain in effect. The word “certain” matters: the proclamation’s definitions, classification requirements and exceptions determine coverage, not a product’s everyday name or where it is sold.

For covered kitchen cabinets and vanities, the same amendment delayed a scheduled increase to 50% until January 1, 2027. That is a scheduled future rate, not a statement that every cabinet or vanity currently carries a 25% duty or will necessarily carry a 50% duty in 2027. Policy changes and product-specific treatment may alter the result.
Could tariffs affect other household goods?
Potentially, when a product or component falls within another tariff action’s listed classifications. The June 2026 White House proclamation addresses aluminum, steel and copper articles and derivatives, including certain residential HVAC systems and components at a temporarily reduced 15% rate. It does not support applying that rate to every air conditioner, furnace, HVAC component, appliance or household metal product.

Materials alone do not settle the question. A product containing steel or aluminum is not automatically covered by a particular metals tariff; the relevant tariff provisions and classification control. Nor does the existence of a tariff on one product establish that similar products, replacement parts or accessories receive the same treatment.
How to check whether a specific product is covered
- Identify the item precisely. Note its function, materials, construction and, where relevant, whether it is a finished product or a component. A broad label such as “sofa” or “HVAC” may not be enough to determine classification.
- Establish the country of origin. The country where a product is sold or shipped from does not by itself establish its customs origin. Origin can affect tariff treatment, including exceptions or other trade arrangements.
- Find the customs classification. Use the product’s tariff classification rather than relying on a retailer’s category name. For a consequential purchase or import, a customs broker or trade professional can help assess the classification and origin.
- Check the current tariff schedule and additional duties. The USITC announced that 2026 HTS Revision 20 was published September 28, 2026. Check the current Harmonized Tariff Schedule provisions, including any relevant Chapter 99 duties, exclusions and country-specific treatment. Later revisions or policy actions may change the result.
- Confirm the effective date and exceptions. Compare the product and origin against the applicable measure’s full language and check whether the duty is in effect, temporarily reduced, delayed or subject to an exception.
The USITC’s Revision 20 announcement identifies the latest revision as of September 28, 2026; it does not mean the same rate applies to all products or origins. The tariff schedule and the governing White House measures control the treatment of an individual import.

Will tariffs make furniture or renovation products more expensive?
A customs duty is assessed on covered imports under the applicable customs rules. It is not a direct retail-price increase. A company may absorb some added cost, change suppliers or product mix, or pass some of the cost on to customers. A 25% import duty therefore does not establish that a covered item’s store price will rise by 25%.
Virco Manufacturing Corporation’s 2026 annual report describes uncertainty around tariff levels, duration, costs and pass-through. That company-specific disclosure does not quantify how retail prices across home goods have changed. Without item-level pricing evidence, the tariff rates alone cannot predict what a shopper will pay.

What the current dates mean for shoppers
As of October 7, 2026, the covered furniture, cabinet and vanity goods remain at 25% under the December 31, 2025 amendment, with higher rates scheduled for January 1, 2027: 30% for covered upholstered furniture and 50% for covered kitchen cabinets and vanities. These are the rates and dates stated in that amendment, not a guarantee that the schedule will remain unchanged.
The USITC identified Revision 20, published September 28, 2026, as its latest announced HTS revision. Because tariff provisions, country treatment and exceptions can change, check the current schedule and relevant measures when evaluating a specific product or import.
