Chinese-made electric cars are finding buyers well beyond Europe and the United States. In 2025, sales grew fastest in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, while more than half of Chinese electric-car sales overseas went to markets outside Europe and the U.S., according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). But the pattern differs by country: some markets rely heavily on imports from China, others are supplied mainly by local automakers, and several are building local production.
Where Chinese electric-car sales are growing fastest
The IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026 reports that Chinese electric-car sales increased by 130% year over year in Southeast Asia in 2025, 60% in the Middle East and 55% in Latin America. Those are growth rates, not measures of each region’s market size. They show where sales were gaining momentum, but do not mean the regions sold equal numbers of vehicles or that every country within them followed the same trend.
The broader shift is from a Europe-heavy export picture toward a wider set of destinations. In 2025, more than half of Chinese electric-car sales overseas were in markets outside Europe and the United States. The IEA also reports that four in five Chinese-made electric cars sold overseas in 2025 were made by Chinese manufacturers; the comparable share was less than two in five in 2021. That statistic describes the manufacturers of vehicles made in China, not the share of all electric cars in overseas markets that were Chinese-branded.
How much of each market’s supply comes from China?
Growth and import dependence are different measures. Across markets outside China, Europe and the United States, China-origin imports accounted for 55% of electric-car sales in 2025, the IEA reports. This regional grouping does not mean every country had a 55% share: India and Viet Nam were exceptions where local automakers supplied most electric-car demand.

Brazil and Thailand: import demand alongside growing local production
Brazil and Thailand illustrate why import shares should be tied to a year. In 2024, Chinese imports accounted for 85% of electric-car sales in each market, according to the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2025. The IEA’s 2026 outlook says local production shares began growing notably in both countries. The reports therefore point to a changing balance between imported vehicles and locally produced supply—not a fixed import share that can safely be carried forward.
The earlier report also put emerging-market electric-car sales in Asia and Latin America at almost 600,000 in 2024, after growth of more than 60%. That is a combined regional figure for the period, not a current count or an individual-country total.

What “Chinese EV” means—and why the distinction matters
“Chinese EV” can describe a vehicle’s place of manufacture, the nationality or ownership of its automaker, or simply a brand associated with China. These are not interchangeable. A foreign-headquartered automaker can build a car in China, and a Chinese-owned brand can build or sell cars in another country. To understand a market-share figure, check whether it counts China-made vehicles, Chinese manufacturers, Chinese brands, exports or registrations.
Europe shows how much the distinction can change the picture. In 2025, China-made vehicles represented close to 60% of the European Union’s electric-car imports, but less than 20% of total EU electric-car demand, according to the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026. Chinese brands made up over 70% of imports from China in 2025, up from 50% in 2023. These figures refer to different denominators: imports from China versus total EU demand, and the brand mix within those imports.

Why shipment figures can overstate sales
Exports are vehicles shipped across borders; they are not necessarily vehicles already sold to consumers. The IEA warns that export figures can diverge from overseas sales when cars are stockpiled as unsold inventory in destination markets. Its 2025 outlook also reported that Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) accounted for 70% of total electric-car exports from China in 2024, up from 55% in 2023. Those are export-mix figures for 2024, not current market shares or proof that all exported cars were sold.
For a personal-finance decision, this distinction matters: a large shipment total does not by itself establish how many cars are available to buy, how well a brand is selling to local consumers, or whether its presence will last. The IEA reports that import tariffs and other trade restrictions changed in several major destination markets, and that local production is growing in some of them. Those shifts can alter the balance between imports and locally made vehicles over time.

What these market figures do—and do not—tell a buyer
Sales growth and import shares help map the spread of Chinese-made electric cars, but they do not establish buyer satisfaction, reliability, resale value, service coverage or the commercial success of any individual automaker. Nor does a high import share prove durable consumer preference. Those questions depend on the specific country, model and ownership conditions; the market figures here describe sales, trade and production, not vehicle-level ownership costs.
