1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor U.S. shoppers comparing Samsung’s 2025 Galaxy S25 family with the 2026 Galaxy S26 and S26+, last year’s phone can be the better buy—but only when its discount is large enough to compensate for its age. The S26 generation brings a newer processor and refinements, while independent review coverage describes the S26 and S26+ as evolutionary rather than major redesigns. If a comparable S25 costs at least $100–$150 less, and it has adequate storage, support, and warranty coverage, it is often the smarter use of your money. If a promotion brings the S26 close to the same price, choose the newer model unless the S25 offers a clear advantage such as more storage.
What “last year’s Galaxy” means in 2026
For this comparison, “last year’s” means Samsung’s Galaxy S25 family, launched in 2025. The closest comparisons are the Galaxy S25 against the S26, and the S25+ against the S26+. The S25 Ultra is a separate choice because its camera system, S Pen, size, and price position differ from the standard models. The S25 FE is a lower-cost alternative, not a direct equivalent to the S26. Foldables have their own replacement cycle and are not part of this like-for-like comparison.
Why the S25 can still be a good value
The S26 is newer, but the upgrade is not necessarily transformative
Samsung identifies the U.S. S26 and S26+ processor as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy; the S25 and S25+ use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy. That is a newer performance generation, but a specification change alone does not tell you how much faster a phone will feel in everyday use. Independent coverage of the S26 generation describes the S26 and S26+ as iterative upgrades, with cameras, displays, and battery experience broadly similar to the prior generation. That is a reviewer assessment, not a guarantee that every task or user will see the same results. Samsung’s S26 product page lists its current features and processor, while Notebookcheck’s S26 review collection provides independent review context.
Compare the things you will actually use
Before paying extra for a new generation, identify a specific S26 improvement that matters to you: a processor-intensive workload, a camera or image-processing change, a battery or connectivity feature, or an AI function you expect to use. Galaxy AI is not one universal feature that works identically across every phone. Samsung’s S26 product page describes features including Photo Assist and Creative Studio and notes support for 41 languages for those tools as of March 2026; do not assume every feature, language, or processing method applies to the S25. Check feature availability, account requirements, and whether a function is exclusive to the new phone before making it the reason to spend more.

If you mostly browse, message, stream, take everyday photos, and use familiar Samsung software, the S25 may already meet your needs. The value case is not that the older phone is always better; it is that a modest generational improvement may not justify a substantial price premium for your use.
Compare real prices, not an old phone’s sale price with a new phone’s list price
Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP list gives the S25 at $799.99 for 128GB and $859.99 for 256GB; the S25+ is $999.99 for 256GB and $1,119.99 for 512GB. Samsung’s U.S. S26 256GB unlocked buy page listed $899.99 and showed a temporary $799.99 promotional price when checked on August 16, 2026. Those are price signals, not guaranteed current offers. The promotion can erase the S25’s price advantage, while remaining S25 inventory may be discounted—or may only be available from a seller with different terms. These figures are not an apples-to-apples record of current sale prices for every model. For a fair decision, compare the same storage, purchase channel, condition, and warranty. A carrier’s advertised discount may depend on a new line, an eligible plan, trade-in condition, or monthly bill credits. Such credits are not the same as an upfront unlocked discount: check the installment term, activation costs, unlock rules, and what happens to credits if you leave early.
A practical price rule
As an editorial rule of thumb—not a manufacturer specification—paying less than $75 extra for the newer model usually favors the S26 unless the S25 has more storage or better coverage. A $100–$200 gap often makes the S25 the value pick; a gap above $200 can make it compelling if condition and remaining support are acceptable. Another useful screen is whether the S25 is at least 15–20% cheaper than the comparable S26 after applying discounts and trade-in terms. These thresholds are guides, not substitutes for comparing the actual offer in front of you.

Check software support against how long you will keep the phone
Samsung says the S26 series will receive seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. That support clock begins with the phone’s launch, not the date you buy it, so an S25 purchased a year after launch has less remaining support time than a newly launched S26. Samsung’s S26 announcement states the S26 commitment.
The supplied official S25 materials establish its processor, but do not establish its exact OS-upgrade and security-update commitment. Because this article cannot verify that policy from an S25 Samsung support source, do not assume the S25 has the same seven-year term or calculate an exact end date from it. Before buying, check Samsung’s support information for the specific S25 model and region, then compare the remaining period with how long you plan to use the phone. A bargain is less attractive if its verified security support ends before you expect to replace it.

Which S25 model makes sense?
Galaxy S25 versus Galaxy S26
Consider the S25 if it is meaningfully cheaper, has the storage you need, and you do not require a new S26-specific feature. Its listed U.S. MSRP of $859.99 for 256GB is below the S26’s $899.99 listed 256GB price, but the temporary S26 sale observed on August 16, 2026, brought that model to $799.99. At that promotional price, the S26 is generally the stronger buy unless the S25 offer has more storage or a better warranty.
Galaxy S25+ versus Galaxy S26+
The same price logic applies to the Plus models: compare matching storage and current prices, not the S25+ MSRP with an S26+ promotion. The S25+ 256GB MSRP was $999.99 in Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. list, and its 512GB version was $1,119.99. Choose the older Plus only when its actual discount justifies the shorter time since launch and any differences in support, features, or coverage.

Galaxy S25 Ultra
Evaluate the S25 Ultra separately rather than treating it as an oversized S25. Its appeal can depend on the telephoto cameras, S Pen, display size, storage, and construction. Compare its real discounted price with the S26 and S26+ as well as any S26 Ultra offer available to you; a steep discount may be worthwhile, but the standard S26 is not a direct substitute for Ultra-specific functions. For a used or refurbished Ultra, confirm that the S Pen is included and that the listing accurately describes the phone’s condition.
Galaxy S25 FE
The S25 FE may suit a tighter budget, but it is a different value tier, not simply a discounted S25 or a like-for-like S26 competitor. Compare its specifications, storage, support, and warranty with the particular alternative you are considering rather than applying the S25-versus-S26 price rule to it.
When last year’s phone is the wrong deal
- The price gap is small. If a current promotion brings the S26 to the S25’s price, the newer phone generally makes more sense unless the S25 has more storage or stronger seller coverage.
- The old listing is used or poorly described. Check battery-health disclosure, screen burn-in, dead pixels, repair history, replacement parts, return period, and warranty. Do not assume a repaired phone still has its original water resistance.
- The discount depends on a costly commitment. Add up required plan costs, activation fees, remaining installments, and bill-credit conditions before counting a carrier offer as savings.
- The storage is inadequate. Compare like with like. A lower price on a smaller-storage phone is not necessarily a better deal if you keep photos, games, or offline video on the device.
- The seller or device is not trustworthy. Verify carrier compatibility, unlock status, and that the IMEI is not blocked; use a seller with a meaningful return policy.
- Support does not cover your ownership horizon. Check the model-specific policy rather than treating an older launch’s support promise as a fresh clock.
Make the decision with this checklist
- Choose the actual models and storage. Compare S25 with S26, or S25+ with S26+, at the same capacity where possible. Treat Ultra and FE models on their own merits.
- Record each current out-the-door offer. Separate unlocked price, instant discount, trade-in value, carrier bill credits, and financing. Include required fees and plan costs.
- Check condition and coverage. Prefer new or reliably certified-refurbished stock with a clear return window and warranty; inspect battery and display details for used devices.
- Verify support and the features you need. Confirm the S25 policy for your model and region, and check whether any S26-only AI, camera, connectivity, or performance feature matters to you.
- Apply the price threshold. If the S25 saves roughly $100–$150 or more after all conditions, and the other checks pass, it is often the better value. If the gap is small, favor the S26.
Samsung’s Galaxy S25 purchase page and S26 unlocked listing are starting points for checking live offers. Samsung’s New Galaxy Club page describes its upgrade program; read its current terms rather than treating a monthly payment or future upgrade credit as an outright discount.
