The 3,028 figure comes from Forbes’ 2025 annual list; Forbes counted 3,428 billionaires in its March 2026 list. The Washington ranking below is a separate snapshot: Stacker compiled it from Forbes estimates dated May 11, 2026, and listed 18 residents. These figures are estimates, not audited disclosures, and the global total and state roster were not measured on the same date.

Who are the richest billionaires in Washington?

In Stacker’s May 11, 2026, Washington snapshot, Steve Ballmer ranked first with an estimated $131.2 billion, followed by Bill Gates at $102.2 billion and MacKenzie Scott at $33.5 billion. The list reports each person’s city or community and industry; those residence labels are list data, not proof of where someone spends most of their time.

Rank Name Estimated net worth Reported residence Industry
1 Steve Ballmer $131.2 billion Hunts Point Technology
2 Bill Gates $102.2 billion Medina Technology
3 MacKenzie Scott $33.5 billion Seattle Technology
4 Melinda French Gates $30.1 billion Seattle Technology
5 Gabe Newell $11.0 billion Seattle Technology
6 Charles Simonyi $7.4 billion Medina Technology
7 Howard Schultz $3.6 billion Seattle Food and beverage
8 Craig McCaw $2.8 billion Hunts Point Telecom
9 John Stanton $2.4 billion Bellevue Telecom
10 Michael Hsing $2.4 billion Yarrow Point Technology
11 Shuo Wang $2.0 billion Medina Technology
12 Christopher Stolte $1.3 billion Seattle Technology
13 Satya Nadella $1.3 billion Bellevue Technology
14 James Jannard $1.2 billion San Juan Islands Fashion and retail
15 Christian Chabot $1.1 billion Seattle Technology
16 Orion Hindawi $1.1 billion Seattle Technology
17 Bob Muglia $1.0 billion Mercer Island Technology
18 David Hindawi $1.0 billion Seattle Technology

All ranks, estimates, residence labels, and industry categories in the table come from Stacker’s compilation of Forbes data as of May 11, 2026. Values are rounded as listed and can change with asset prices. The complete roster is a single compilation republished by The Bellingham Herald; separate Forbes profiles corroborate the listed residences of Ballmer, Gates, Nadella, and Melinda French Gates. Those profile pages use different measurement dates, so their figures are not substituted into this dated ranking.

How the 2025 global figure compares with 2026

Forbes’ 2025 annual list counted 3,028 billionaires worldwide, with combined estimated wealth of about $16 trillion, according to Axios’ report on the list. Forbes’ March 2026 annual list counted 3,428. The latter is the newer global count; it should not be read as a recalculation of the Washington roster, which is dated May 11, 2026.

What the Washington roster says about wealth sources

Technology is the dominant industry category in this list, but it is not the only one. The entries also include food and beverage, telecom, and fashion and retail. The roster describes industries and estimated fortunes; those categories alone do not establish the scale of any person’s current business activity or broader social or economic influence.

A billionaire designation is a point-in-time estimate, not a permanent status. Forbes and Stacker’s figures are estimates rather than audited disclosures, and a person’s position or inclusion can change as asset values move.
