Norwegian Cruise Line said a guest was reported overboard from Norwegian Jewel on October 20, 2025, while the ship was sailing from Ponta Delgada, Portugal, to Miami. The company said authorities were notified and a search involving multiple vessels was unsuccessful. Later passenger accounts mentioned an argument at the casino, but available reporting did not establish what led to the incident.
What Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed
In a statement quoted by Local 10 on October 22, an unnamed Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said the company was notified that a guest had reportedly gone overboard during the ship’s passage from Ponta Delgada to Miami. The spokesperson said authorities were notified and an extensive search and rescue operation involving multiple vessels was conducted. The search was unsuccessful, and authorities released the ship to continue its voyage.
The company also said its team was attending to the guest’s loved ones. Its statement did not identify the guest or explain the circumstances of the incident.
What passengers said about the casino
In a follow-up published October 27, Local 10 reported passenger accounts of an argument at the casino before the overboard incident. Passenger Jerry Cohn described the announcement’s effect aboard the ship, saying, “As soon as you heard the bell for the announcement, the whole ship got silent, cause they all wanted to know.”
