The Verge’s 2025 bag guide collects staff favorites for travel, everyday carry, and organizing smaller essentials. In the available article copy, Allison Johnson’s Tom Bihn Synik 30 stands out for family outings and weekend travel, while Tina Nguyen’s canvas pouch is a compact organizer. These are personal recommendations, not results from a scored, head-to-head test.
What the 2025 guide covers
The guide asks staff about the bags they favor for travel, day-to-day use, and other ways of carrying belongings. The available syndicated copy includes specific accounts from senior reviewer Allison Johnson and senior reporter Tina Nguyen. It does not establish the complete set of recommendations in the original guide, so the examples below should not be read as an exhaustive list.
A backpack for family outings and weekend travel
Tom Bihn Synik 30 — Allison Johnson
Johnson says she bought the Synik 30 a few years before writing about it and uses it for a day out with her children or for weekend travel. She describes it as roomy enough for what she needs, including clothing and a small first-aid kit, and values its pockets and materials. Her summary: “It holds everything I need for a day out with the kids or a weekend traveling.”
Johnson also says her bag still looked new after about six years. That is her observation of her own bag, not a durability test, guarantee, or claim about every unit.

A small pouch for essentials inside another bag
The Unemployed Philosophers Guild 9-inch canvas pouch — Tina Nguyen
Nguyen uses a 9-inch canvas pouch to keep small items together inside her other bags. She says her own pouch holds items such as pens and cables, and describes it as “well-constructed, big enough to hold multiple items.” Its flat profile fits unobtrusively in most bags, and the description mentions a carabiner loop. These are Nguyen’s impressions and use details, not independent testing.
Other bags named in Nguyen’s rotation
Nguyen also names the Peak Design Everyday 15L, an Anya Hindmarch canvas tote, and a Uniqlo half-moon bag as bags she regularly cycles through. The available passage does not give detailed evaluations of these examples or establish them as the complete guide’s recommendations, so there is not enough information to compare their capacity, organization, or performance.
