Cloud mining is real, but a cloud-mining contract is not automatically profitable. You pay a provider for access to mining capacity while it operates the hardware, pays for power and maintenance, and credits you with a share of mining proceeds. Your result depends on Bitcoin’s price, network difficulty, hardware efficiency, fees, uptime, contract terms, and the provider’s ability to pay.
In other words, cloud mining is exposure to mining economics—not free Bitcoin and not guaranteed passive income. Before paying, calculate net rewards, stress-test the contract, verify the provider, and compare the outcome with simply buying Bitcoin.

What is cloud mining?
Cloud mining lets customers obtain Bitcoin-mining capacity without buying, installing, cooling, or maintaining mining equipment. The provider operates ASIC miners—specialized machines built for proof-of-work mining—usually in a data center.
- You purchase a contract, hashrate allocation, marketplace order, or digital mining asset.
- The provider directs its equipment to a mining pool.
- The pool calculates rewards according to contributed work and its payout method.
- The provider deducts electricity, maintenance, pool, platform, and other charges.
- The remaining amount is credited to your account or paid to your wallet.
A provider can be genuine while selling an unattractive contract. Conversely, photographs of mining farms, a polished dashboard, or daily payout figures do not prove that the provider controls the hashrate it advertises.

Cloud mining product types
| Product | What you buy | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-term contract | A specified amount of hashrate for a defined period | Difficulty may rise until the contract becomes uneconomic |
| Perpetual or open-ended contract | Hashrate without a fixed end date | The provider may pause or terminate service when rewards fall below fees |
| Hosted mining | Usually a physical miner, with the provider supplying space, power, and maintenance | Hardware, facility, shipping, repair, and custody risk |
| Hashrate marketplace | Short-term hashrate purchased from sellers | Variable pricing and greater technical complexity |
| Tokenized or digital miner | A token or platform asset representing mining capacity or reward rights | Legal ownership, token, liquidity, and platform risk |
| Mobile “mining” app | App-based rewards | It may simulate mining rather than perform meaningful Bitcoin proof-of-work |
These categories are not interchangeable. Bitdeer, for example, separates cloud-hashrate services from self-mining and hosting activities in its public disclosures (company operating update). GoMining markets “digital miners” whose rewards are reduced by electricity and service costs (GoMining calculator).
How Bitcoin mining generates revenue
Bitcoin miners collect pending transactions into candidate blocks and repeatedly calculate hashes until one meets the network’s difficulty target. Mining pools combine many miners’ work and distribute rewards more regularly than solo mining.
- Hashrate: Computing power, commonly measured in TH/s, PH/s, or EH/s.
- Difficulty: The network’s measure of how hard it is to find a valid block.
- Hashprice: Expected mining revenue per unit of hashrate, often expressed per PH/s per day.
- Block subsidy: Newly issued Bitcoin paid to the successful miner.
- Transaction fees: Fees attached to transactions included in a block.
- Uptime: The percentage of time equipment actually hashes.
- Efficiency: Electricity consumption per unit of hashrate, often watts per TH/s.
- Maintenance fee: Charges for electricity, cooling, repairs, administration, and data-center operations.
Bitcoin’s most recent halving occurred on April 19, 2024, reducing the block subsidy from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. Difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks, approximately every two weeks, so a contract’s expected revenue can fall even when its advertised hashrate remains unchanged. The subsidy and difficulty figures are documented in public filings such as this Bitcoin mining disclosure.
Pool payout methods also matter. FPPS can include expected block subsidies and transaction fees, less the pool fee; PPS and other methods use different calculations. See the explanations of FPPS and PPS payouts and pool-fee deductions.
How to calculate cloud-mining profitability
Do not use the provider’s headline ROI as your conclusion. Start with the provider’s hashrate and estimate your share of network rewards.
Gross BTC per day ≈ customer hashrate ÷ network hashrate × expected daily network rewards
Expected daily network rewards include the block subsidy and transaction fees. Then subtract every cost:
Net daily revenue = gross mining revenue − electricity fee − maintenance fee − pool fee − platform fee − withdrawal/conversion costs
A simple nominal break-even calculation is:
Break-even days = total upfront cost ÷ expected net daily revenue
This is a scenario estimate, not a forecast. It assumes the inputs remain stable, which they will not necessarily do.

Use a worksheet
Initial contract price: $X
Expected gross revenue per day: $Y
Electricity and maintenance per day: $Z
Pool, platform and withdrawal costs: $A
Expected net revenue per day: $Y − $Z − $A
Nominal break-even period: $X ÷ net daily revenue
Run the worksheet at least four ways:
- Base assumptions.
- Bitcoin price 30% lower.
- Network difficulty 25% higher.
- Ten percent downtime.
- Maintenance fees 20% higher.
- Rewards falling below the provider’s fee floor.
Some provider calculators use static assumptions. Bitdeer’s materials identify scenarios in which future Bitcoin price, difficulty, and block rewards are held constant—an assumption that is especially weak for long-term contracts (Bitdeer cloud-mining information). GoMining likewise says its displayed rewards are approximate and depend on Bitcoin price, network complexity, and maintenance costs (GoMining calculator).
Every fee to find in the contract
Look beyond the sales page and locate these charges in the legal terms:
- Upfront hashrate purchase price.
- Electricity cost per TH/s per day.
- Maintenance or operations fee.
- Mining-pool fee.
- Platform commission.
- Deposit, withdrawal, or conversion fees.
- Minimum withdrawal amount.
- Currency-conversion spread.
- Dormancy or account fees.
- Activation, hardware replacement, or early-termination charges.
- Taxes or local charges.
- Reinvestment or compounding charges.
- Fees payable in a platform token.
- Terms allowing the provider to change fees.
Gross rewards are not your income. A calculator that shows gross output before maintenance can make a contract appear profitable until electricity and service costs are deducted. Token-based discounts add another risk: the discount may depend on buying or holding a volatile platform token.
Why a contract can become unprofitable
Difficulty growth
When more miners join the Bitcoin network, difficulty generally rises. Your fixed 10 TH/s then represents a smaller share of total network computation.

Bitcoin’s block subsidy periodically falls by half. Unless Bitcoin’s price, transaction fees, uptime, or hardware efficiency compensates, miners receive less revenue per unit of hashrate.
Bitcoin-price volatility
A contract can produce more Bitcoin while losing money in dollars, or appear profitable in dollars only because Bitcoin’s price has risen. Choose the currency that matters to your goal and model both where relevant.

- Continue mining while crediting nothing.
- Accumulate a negative balance.
- Pause the contract.
- End the contract permanently.
- Require an additional payment to reactivate it.
Downtime and operating risk
Power failures, repairs, cooling problems, connectivity issues, regulatory restrictions, weather, and facility relocation can reduce output. A contract with no meaningful uptime commitment leaves you bearing much of that risk.

Counterparty risk
You depend on the provider for accurate accounting, wallet access, payouts, contract enforcement, and continued operation. Bitdeer’s risk disclosures identify exposure to Bitcoin price, network hashrate, electricity and data-center costs, contract pricing, occupancy, and regulation (risk factors).
How to investigate a provider
Evidence worth seeking
- A named legal entity and verifiable corporate registration.
- Real physical locations and operating disclosures.
- Audited accounts or regulatory filings where applicable.
- Specific hashrate, hardware, efficiency, pool, and payout information.
- Clear terms, fees, suspension rules, and jurisdiction.
- Independent evidence of wallet or pool activity where possible.
- Working customer support and a documented KYC process.
- Withdrawals that do not require arbitrary extra payments.
Public-company filings and operating figures improve transparency but do not prove that every customer contract is profitable. Bitdeer reported 86.1 EH/s of total hash rate under management as of June 30, 2026, including several business lines; that company-wide figure is not proof of the economics or customer-level hashrate of a particular plan.
Scam signals
- Guaranteed daily or monthly returns.
- “Risk-free” or “zero-risk” Bitcoin.
- Fixed ROI despite changing difficulty.
- Referral commissions emphasized more than mining operations.
- Pressure, countdown timers, or “limited slots.”
- Anonymous operators or no legal address.
- Fake-looking dashboards without verifiable transactions.
- Withdrawals blocked until you pay a tax, unlock fee, or verification fee.
- Fees payable only in cryptocurrency.
- Claims that a phone performs industrial-scale Bitcoin mining.
- No explanation of hardware, electricity, pool, or contract duration.
The Federal Trade Commission warns that crypto scams may promise guaranteed returns, use fake account balances, block withdrawals, or demand additional fees. Bitcoin.org also describes cloud-mining-style Ponzi schemes in which later deposits fund apparent payouts to earlier participants (scam guidance).
Ten checks before paying
- Search the legal name plus “complaint,” “fraud,” “withdrawal,” and “lawsuit.”
- Read the contract rather than relying on the FAQ.
- Confirm hashrate, algorithm, duration, hardware, and fee basis.
- Determine whether payouts are actual BTC or internal credits.
- Test the smallest available withdrawal.
- Check wallet destinations and transaction history where possible.
- Confirm country eligibility, KYC, and geo-blocking.
- Find clauses allowing fee changes or suspension.
- Treat affiliate reviews as marketing unless conflicts and methodology are disclosed.
- Never send more money to release an already displayed balance.
Cloud mining compared with alternatives
Buying Bitcoin directly
Buying Bitcoin provides simpler price exposure without hardware, electricity, uptime, or mining-provider risk. It still involves Bitcoin-price, exchange, and custody risk, but the comparison is straightforward: what amount of Bitcoin could the same initial capital buy?
Owning and operating mining hardware
Owning ASICs provides control over the machine, pool, firmware, location, and operating strategy. It also creates upfront cost, noise, heat, electrical, repair, logistics, and obsolescence problems. Electricity cost can determine whether the operation works at all.
Hosted mining
Hosted mining may give you ownership and resale value in a physical machine while outsourcing facility operations. You still face hosting-rate changes, shipping delays, repairs, facility risk, and disputes over custody or ownership.

- Canaan has launched the Avalon Nano 3S ASIC miner designed for residential spaces, featuring the SHA-256 algorithm for direct Bitcoin mining.
- The Nano 3S boasts an eye-catching design with an information display screen and simple setup, making it suitable for beginners or as a gift.
- Despite its small size and quiet operation, its hash rate of 6Th/s and power consumption of 140W result in a relatively low energy efficiency.
Hashrate marketplaces
Marketplaces can offer shorter durations and more control over pools and strategies. They suit technically capable users better than beginners because order pricing, algorithms, pool fees, and payout mechanics require active evaluation.
Mining stocks
Mining-company shares provide equity exposure to a business rather than direct Bitcoin or mining payouts. Shareholders face dilution, debt, management decisions, energy costs, stock-market volatility, and possible shifts into AI or other data-center businesses.

Pricing and availability can change after August 16, 2026. Provider calculators are marketing tools, not independent forecasts. Availability may also depend on country, KYC, and account status.
| Provider or service | Product type | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bitdeer | Cloud hashrate, hosting, and mining infrastructure | Public reporting improves transparency, but contract profitability still depends on live fees, difficulty, price, and availability. |
| GoMining | Tokenized or digital miners | The calculator separates gross rewards, electricity, and service costs; token discounts add platform and token exposure. |
| NiceHash | Hashrate marketplace | More flexible, but short-term rates and pool configuration require technical understanding. |
| BitFuFu | Cloud-mining contracts | Review live plan economics, withdrawal terms, and contract language individually. |
| ECOS | Fixed-term cloud contracts | Beginner-oriented presentation does not eliminate long-term difficulty and fee risk. |
| Binance Cloud Mining | Cloud-mining products for eligible users | Availability may vary by country and account; exchange, custody, platform, and regulatory risks are added. |
Do not describe any provider as universally “the best” or “safe” solely because it appears in a comparison. Classify products by fit: infrastructure transparency, low-complexity entry, advanced marketplace flexibility, or existing-exchange convenience.
Tax, custody, and regulatory considerations
Mining income, token rewards, digital-asset ownership, and contract payments can receive different treatment depending on your country and circumstances. A contract may give you a claim to rewards rather than ownership of physical hardware. Keep records of deposits, fees, payouts, wallet transfers, token transactions, and the contract itself. Obtain jurisdiction-specific tax and legal advice before committing significant money.
Providers may restrict countries, require KYC, apply anti-money-laundering controls, or use IP geo-blocking. Bitdeer’s disclosures describe such controls for certain products and jurisdictions (filing). Availability should be checked for your country and the date of purchase.

Step 1: Define your goal
- Bitcoin price exposure?
- Learning how mining works?
- Owning physical hardware?
- Speculative income?
- A short-term hashrate trade?
If your only goal is Bitcoin exposure, compare the contract with buying Bitcoin using the same initial capital.

Step 2: Record every input
Contract price
Hashrate and algorithm
Start and end date
Hardware model and efficiency
Electricity and maintenance fees
Pool and platform fees
Payout method
Minimum withdrawal and withdrawal fee
Uptime commitment
Suspension and fee-change clauses
Refund, cancellation, jurisdiction, and dispute terms
Step 3: Stress-test the outcome
Model lower Bitcoin prices, higher difficulty, downtime, fee increases, missed payouts, and a contract ending once rewards fall below fees.
Step 4: Verify the provider
Check corporate identity, filings, infrastructure evidence, payout evidence, terms, independent complaints, and country eligibility.
Step 5: Choose a conclusion
- Avoid: The economics are negative or provider evidence is inadequate.
- Speculative only: The provider appears operational, but the return is highly uncertain.
- Potentially reasonable: Costs are transparent and the contract remains plausible under conservative assumptions.
- Use an alternative: Buying Bitcoin, owning hardware, hosted mining, or a marketplace better matches your goal.
Cloud-mining scorecard
For a structured comparison, score each provider from zero to five on:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Legal identity and corporate transparency.
- Evidence of operating infrastructure.
- Hashrate clarity.
- Hardware-efficiency disclosure.
- Fee transparency.
- Contract flexibility.
- Withdrawal reliability.
- Payout-method clarity.
- Geographic and regulatory clarity.
- Financial resilience and independent reporting.
- Absence of guaranteed-return language.
Do not turn the result into a misleading single “best provider” score without explaining the weighting. A public company may score well on disclosure while still offering a contract with poor expected value. A low-entry-price product may be accessible but burdened by maintenance or token risk.
Final answer: is cloud mining worth it?
Cloud mining may suit a technically informed investor who understands Bitcoin mining, can tolerate losing the entire amount, and finds a contract with transparent costs and plausible economics under conservative assumptions. It is a poor fit for anyone seeking guaranteed passive income, predictable cash flow, or a simple way to grow Bitcoin.
The decisive test is not the advertised daily payout. It is whether the provider, contract, fees, difficulty assumptions, downtime risk, withdrawal rules, and counterparty exposure still make sense after an adverse scenario. If your goal is simply Bitcoin exposure, buying Bitcoin directly is usually easier to evaluate. If your goal is mining ownership, hosted or self-operated hardware may provide clearer rights—along with greater operational responsibility.
