Indeed can help you find openings, but it does not decide who gets hired—and a listing or application status is not a guarantee of legitimacy, a response, or an interview. Treat it as a job-search intermediary: verify the employer and opening, understand where your application goes, manage what you share, and use reviews as clues rather than a verdict. A 2021 Reddit post behind the phrase “the ugly truth” recommended finding roles on Indeed and applying through the company site when appropriate; that is one job seeker’s advice, not proof that this route works better for everyone.
What Indeed does—and what it does not do
Indeed can display and promote job ads, recommend matches, host profiles and resumes, and route applications. In its U.S. Terms of Service, Indeed says that “only the Employer, and not Indeed, makes any decision in the recruitment and hiring processes,” including whether to advance or hire an applicant. The same terms characterize job ads as advertising and say matching can use job ads, profile and resume information, application materials, and activity such as searches, clicks, and applications. They also caution users not to substitute the platform for their own judgment. Indeed U.S. Terms of Service
That description does not reveal every factor behind a specific recommendation or establish how a particular employer handles applications. Indeed is an intermediary, not the hiring authority; the employer controls its own recruitment decisions.
How to use Indeed without treating it as the whole process
1. Verify the job and employer
When practical, look for the opening on the employer’s official careers site and check that the company and contact details are genuine. The Reddit post’s suggestion to use Indeed for discovery and then apply directly is a reasonable verification step, but it is anecdotal—not a universal rule or a demonstrated route to better hiring outcomes. Some employers use Indeed’s application flow; others require an external site.

2. Record where each application went
Before submitting, note whether the application stays on Indeed or opens an employer or applicant-tracking-system (ATS) site. Save the job title, employer, destination URL, application date, and any confirmation. Indeed’s UK support guidance says it does not send a confirmation email when an applicant applies on an employer’s website. Questions about that submission should go to the employer, and employers may receive many applications and not respond to everyone. Indeed UK: How to Apply for a Job
3. Follow up with the right organization
If your application went to an employer’s site, check that system or contact the employer through a verified channel. If it stayed on Indeed, use the application information available there. Do not assume that an absent Indeed confirmation means an external application failed, or that a visible status means the employer has made a decision.
What to know about resume visibility and personal information
Indeed’s U.S. terms say that profiles, Indeed Resumes, and uploaded resumes may be made available to potential employers and users of Smart Sourcing or other resume-search programs. Review the profile privacy controls and the contents of any resume you submit; searchable visibility can help employers find you, but it also means sharing information with potential employers. Indeed’s privacy FAQ describes controls for profile visibility and processes to access or request deletion of personal data. Indeed U.S. Terms of Service Indeed Privacy FAQs
The same FAQ describes an employer conversion tracker that can attribute an application to Indeed when a job seeker began searching there, even if other activity took place before applying. That is an attribution mechanism; it does not establish that Indeed sees every action across other websites or controls an employer’s hiring system.

Indeed’s demographic survey is not the same as an employer’s questions
Indeed says its optional U.S. demographic survey responses are not shown on a profile or resume and are not shared individually with employers without permission; aggregated summaries may be shared. The help article lists six categories currently collected from U.S. job seekers: age (birth year), race and ethnicity, gender, disability status, LGBTQIA+ community membership, and arrest or conviction history. It describes collection in the U.S., UK, Ireland, and France, but local availability and practices can change. Indeed: Voluntary Self-Identification Survey FAQs
Questions an employer asks applicants to answer voluntarily are separate. If you provide those answers, they are shared with that employer. Check which form you are completing and who is asking before submitting information.
How to spot a suspicious opportunity
A single warning sign does not prove a job is fraudulent, but requests for money or financial transactions on an employer’s behalf are serious reasons to stop and verify. Indeed advises job seekers to check the sender’s email domain, compare an offer with the position they applied for, be cautious of offers made without an in-person or video interview, and report suspicious messages. It says never to pay a prospective employer or send or receive money for one. Indeed: How to Spot a Job Scam
- Verify the recruiter using contact details found independently on the employer’s official site, not just details in the message.
- Check that the role and offer match the job you applied for; treat unusually attractive offers with caution.
- Do not pay to apply, deposit or forward money, or share sensitive financial or identity details merely because a recruiter asks.
- Be wary if the process skips an in-person or video interview, and report suspicious messages through Indeed.
What employee reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Employee reviews can surface topics to investigate, such as management, workplace culture, work-life balance, and job security or advancement. They are not a census of a company’s workforce: people who choose to post reviews may not represent everyone, and their experiences can reflect particular events, roles, locations, or points in time.

Letian Zhang’s 2022 paper, “Racial Inequality in Work Environments,” analyzed historical Indeed review data. Its detailed sample included 932,943 unique reviews from 8,851 U.S. firms, collected from January 2012 through December 2015; the abstract rounds the dataset to one million reviews. The paper notes that reviewers are nonrandom and may post after positive or negative events, and its findings concern associations between firm racial composition and reported work environments—not a current rating of a particular employer. For a job decision, look for repeated, concrete themes across reviews and compare their dates, roles, and locations when visible. Use a review to form questions for an interview or to seek corroboration, not to conclude from one extreme post or score that an employer is good, bad, or discriminatory.

| What to check | Useful question |
|---|---|
| Listing verification | Is the role also on the employer’s official careers page, and does the employer identity check out? |
| Application route | Does the application stay on Indeed or go to an employer or ATS site? Can you save a submitted copy or confirmation? |
| Profile exposure | What resume or profile information is visible under your current privacy setting, and are you comfortable with searchable visibility? |
| Workplace evidence | Are reviews specific, repeated, recent, and relevant to the role and location—or isolated and uncorroborated? |
| Contact safety | Does the recruiter use a verifiable employer channel, conduct a normal interview, and avoid requests for money or financial transactions? |
There is no reliable, current Indeed-wide job-response rate or hiring-success rate established here. The anecdotes in the Reddit thread do not supply one, and an individual applicant’s experience cannot establish a platform-wide probability.
