Re:

The TikTok Chase Bank “Money Glitch” Is Check Fraud—Don’t Try It

The TikTok Chase “money glitch” is a fake-check scheme, not free money. A deposit can be reversed, and knowingly moving fraudulent funds can bring criminal risk.

The viral “Chase Bank money glitch” is not a way to create money. It relies on depositing a fraudulent check and moving the apparent proceeds before the bank determines the check is bad. The deposit can later be reversed, leaving you responsible for the loss—and knowingly helping with the scheme can expose you to criminal charges.

What is the Chase Bank money glitch on TikTok?

It is a check-fraud scheme, not a bank feature or loophole. In the pattern Chase describes, someone deposits a counterfeit check, sees a credit or available funds in the account, and is urged to withdraw, transfer, or return money before the bank identifies the check as invalid.

A credit showing in an account does not establish that the check is genuine or has been finally honored. Chase warns that counterfeit checks can take weeks to be identified as fake. If the check is rejected, the apparent funds can be removed from the account, and the person who deposited it may be responsible for money already spent or sent. Chase’s counterfeit-check guidance explains the risk.

Is the Chase money glitch real?

No legitimate “glitch” creates spendable money this way. The temporary appearance of funds is not proof that a check is valid. A genuine check that is ultimately honored and a counterfeit check later rejected can look similar at first in an account; the eventual outcome is different.

Chase also warns about fake-check overpayment scams, in which a recipient is told to return part of a payment. Do not send money back to someone who claims a check deposit was an overpayment, and do not withdraw or transfer funds at a promoter’s direction. Once money has been sent, recovery may be difficult, especially if you authorized the payment. Chase explains the limits of recovering money sent to a scammer.

Can you get in trouble for the Chase check glitch?

Knowingly depositing fraudulent checks and quickly withdrawing or transferring the proceeds can be treated as participation in bank fraud. In July 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice reported that Chase Matthew Griffin was sentenced to 108 months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud. According to the DOJ, he recruited account holders online to deposit stolen or altered checks and withdraw funds before banks detected the fraud. Read the DOJ case announcement.

That case illustrates the legal risk of knowingly joining such a scheme; it is not a ruling about every person who saw or shared a video, or who innocently received a bad check. Whether a particular person committed an offense depends on what they knew, their intent and conduct, and applicable law. Do not assume that following a stranger’s instructions makes the activity safe or lawful.

What should you do if you already deposited the check?

  1. Stop moving the money. Do not spend, withdraw, return, or transfer funds tied to the suspicious check.
  2. Contact Chase through a verified channel. Use the number on the back of your card, visit a branch, or find a contact method through Chase’s official fraud guidance. Do not rely on a phone number or link supplied by the person promoting the “glitch.” Chase says to act quickly when you suspect fraud.
  3. Explain what happened and follow the bank’s instructions. Be clear about the check, any money moved, and any information you shared. Chase’s report-fraud page lists current contacts and reporting details; contact information and hours can change. For personal checking or savings accounts and debit cards, that page lists 1-800-935-9935, option 8.
  4. Keep records. Save the video and messages, check image, deposit information, and transaction details. If you exposed identity information, ask Chase what additional steps apply; Chase advises contacting law enforcement for identity theft.
  5. Do not count on recovering an authorized transfer. Tell Chase promptly if you sent money, but understand that money you authorized sending to a scammer can be difficult to recover.

Why a social-media money tip deserves caution

Chase reported that nearly 50% of scams reported to the company originated on social media in the second half of 2025. That figure describes Chase’s reported-scam population during that period; it is not an estimate of all scams or of this particular TikTok trend. See JPMorgan Chase’s report.

A video can make a temporary account credit look like proof of a successful trick. It does not show that the check will clear, that a participant will avoid losses, or that knowingly moving fraudulent funds is lawful. Treat requests to deposit a check and quickly send money elsewhere as a warning sign, not a financial opportunity.
