Mahindra began in 1945 as a steel-trading business. It moved into vehicles through Jeep assembly, built a second industrial base in tractors, and expanded internationally through exports, partnerships, acquisitions, local assembly and engineering investment. Today, Mahindra & Mahindra is the Mahindra Group’s flagship company, with businesses extending well beyond SUVs.
When was Mahindra founded?
J.C. and K.C. Mahindra and Ghulam Mohammed established Mahindra & Mohammed on 2 October 1945, initially as a steel trader, according to the company’s official history. The company’s name later became Mahindra & Mahindra.
How did Mahindra start making cars?
Mahindra entered vehicle manufacturing by assembling Jeeps in India. The company’s timeline says 75 Jeeps arrived from Willys Overland Export Corporation in completely knocked-down condition and were assembled at Mazagon, Bombay, in 1949. Its FY2024–25 annual report separately says it assembled its first vehicle in 1947. Mahindra’s published materials do not explain the difference, so these should be treated as separate company-recorded milestones rather than reconciled into a single date. Why did tractors matter to Mahindra’s growth?
Tractors gave Mahindra a second major industrial business alongside vehicles. In 1961, the company joined with U.S.-based International Harvester to manufacture tractors. In 1963, the International Tractor Company of India (ITCI) was formed as a joint venture involving International Harvester and Voltas, with a licence to manufacture 3,500 tractors, according to Mahindra’s history.

ITCI merged into Mahindra in 1977 and became its tractor division. Mahindra says it became India’s largest-selling tractor brand in 1983 and held that position for four decades. Its FY2024–25 report describes the group as the world’s largest tractor company by volume. Both leadership statements are company claims; the latter is tied to that reporting year and volume measure, not an independent ranking. The annual report provides the company’s current framing.
How did Mahindra build its modern automotive business?
Mahindra’s later automotive development combined manufacturing capacity, acquisitions and engineering investment rather than relying on a single vehicle or deal.

Facilities and electric vehicles
The company records the opening of an automotive facility at Chakan, Pune, in 2008 and its acquisition of Reva Electric Vehicles in 2010. These milestones added manufacturing infrastructure and an electric-vehicle business to its portfolio. Mahindra’s timeline lists both.
A global SUV and an overseas acquisition
Mahindra launched the XUV500 in 2011, calling it its first global SUV model. That same year, it acquired South Korean SUV maker SsangYong Motor. The XUV500 milestone marks a product designed for a broader international role; the acquisition was a separate route into another automotive market. Neither milestone alone explains the company’s subsequent expansion. The company timeline records both events.

Investment in engineering and motorsport
Mahindra also opened Mahindra Research Valley, which it describes as an automotive and tractor innovation hub. In 2014, Mahindra Racing joined Formula E as a founding team. These are examples of investment in engineering and technical visibility, alongside the company’s manufacturing and market-building activity. How did Mahindra become a global company?
“Global” describes several different kinds of activity in Mahindra’s story: exporting finished vehicles, assembling vehicles locally, entering markets through local channels, acquiring a foreign automaker, and building international research and design capacity. They should not be collapsed into one measure of overseas sales.
