The Sports Cards and Collectible Trading Cards Market: How It Works and What Buyers Should Know

Sports cards are a varied collectibles market, not a single investment index. Learn how card attributes, grading, platform data, and transaction costs shape a careful buying decision.

Sports cards and collectible trading cards are a broad, fragmented collectibles market—not one asset class with a single reliable price index. A card’s sport, athlete, year, set, card number, variant, features, condition, authenticity, and provenance all affect what it can sell for. Platform search activity, category-level price comparisons, and headline auction records offer clues about attention and demand, but none by itself establishes the value or likely return of a particular card.

What is the sports and collectible trading-card market?

It is an ecosystem of collectors, sellers, marketplaces, auction houses, grading and authentication companies, and storage services. It includes sports cards across leagues and eras as well as other collectible trading cards. Cards may be bought to complete a set, follow a favorite athlete or team, preserve a personal connection to a sport, or resell. Those motives overlap, but they are not interchangeable: a card that matters to one collector may not have the same appeal to another.

There is no clearly established, authoritative total-market size or forecast in the sources cited here. The available figures have narrower scopes: eBay reports activity on its platform, PSA publishes claims about its own certification and marketplace share, and an auction record describes one transaction. These figures should not be combined into a market-wide growth estimate.

What makes one card different from another?

Before comparing prices, identify the exact card. A player name or a year alone is not enough: several cards of the same athlete can differ substantially by set, card number, parallel, insert, signature, memorabilia content, and condition. A useful comparison matches as many of those attributes as possible.

2025 Topps NFL Signature Class Football - Factory Sealed - Value Box
  • Chase the game’s brightest stars and its all-time greats. 7 cards per pack. 6 packs per box. A strong release for collectors seeking both today’s stars and all-time greats. Topps Signature Class is built to celebrate the art of the signature and the identity behind it.
  • 2025 Topps Signature Class Football features a 250-card base set highlighting top veterans and rising stars, including 150 rookies in Paper and Chrome parallels with a full range of colors.
  • The product offers multiple ways to collect. It introduces Short Prints like Fluidity and Roses, plus Super Short Prints such as Draft Dreams, First Class, and Odyssey.
  • Autographs are led by Chrome and Crystal Clear editions, alongside subsets like Supreme Signers, Preeminent Ink, and HOF Signs, with rare Dual and Triple Autographs also in the chase.
  • The checklist is packed with talent, featuring rookies like Jaxson Dart and Tetairoa McMillan, stars like Josh Allen and Jaxson Smith-Njigba, and legends including Tom Brady and Roger Staubach.
  • Sport, athlete, and era: Collector attention can vary by sport, player, career moment, and generation.
  • Year, set, and card number: These establish which issue is being discussed; cards of the same player from different sets are not equivalent.
  • Parallel or insert: A variant or subset may have different characteristics and demand from the base card.
  • Autograph or memorabilia feature: A signature or piece of memorabilia changes the card’s attributes. The signature’s type and provenance matter; an aftermarket signature is not the same feature as an original card issue.
  • Condition and authenticity: Wear, damage, alteration, and whether a card has been authenticated can affect buyer confidence and comparability.
  • Provenance: Documented ownership or authentication history can help a buyer assess what is being offered, but it does not make otherwise dissimilar cards comparable.

What recent eBay figures do—and do not—show

eBay’s 2025 Collected Report offers a view of activity on eBay, not a census of collectors or transactions across the entire market. Its top-collectibles search rankings use eBay.com searches from January through October 2025. Its athlete rankings use searches in eBay’s Sports Memorabilia Cards and Fan Shop category from January through September 2025. “Football Cards” appeared among the report’s ten most-searched collectibles; the report also listed leading searched athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, and WNBA categories, including Michael Jordan, Jayden Daniels, Shohei Ohtani, Wayne Gretzky, and Caitlin Clark.

The same report compared average sale prices for global sold items in eBay’s Trading Cards category in January–September 2025 with January–September 2020. These are category-level comparisons on eBay, not returns for a specific card or an individual collector:

Category Average sold-price change
WNBA cards +130% — eBay’s 2025 report; global eBay Trading Cards sold items, January–September 2025 versus January–September 2020.
WWE cards +125% — eBay’s 2025 report; same category and comparison periods.
NHL cards +40% — eBay’s 2025 report; same category and comparison periods.
F1 cards +35% — eBay’s 2025 report; same category and comparison periods.

The report also says global eBay searches for Nick Kurtz rose 23,000% and searches for Jayden Daniels rose 1,900%, comparing January–September 2025 with January–September 2024. Those are search changes, not price changes. They illustrate how attention to athletes can show up in platform activity; they do not establish that card prices rose by the same amount.

For a different kind of signal, eBay’s report says a signed 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card sold at Goldin for $2.7 million in October 2025, describing it as a record for a trading card with an aftermarket signature. That is one high-end transaction, not a typical price or a benchmark for unsigned copies, other Jordan cards, or cards generally.

How do raw cards, graded cards, and population reports compare?

A raw card is not encapsulated with a third-party grade. A graded card has been assessed by a grading service, which may authenticate it, assign a condition grade, and encapsulate it. Services may also publish population reports that count cards they have graded at different grades. This can give buyers a more standardized description and one additional source of information, but it does not remove every uncertainty.

Consideration Raw card Graded card
Condition assessment The buyer evaluates the card from available images or in person; seller descriptions are not a third-party grade. A grading service assigns a grade under its process; the grade is one input into assessing the card.
Authentication and holder No grading-service authentication or encapsulation is implied by raw status. Eligible cards may be authenticated and encapsulated by the service.
Population information Not represented in a grading company’s graded-population count unless later submitted and counted under that company’s conventions. A service population report may show how many items it has graded at different grades.
Cost and process No grading submission is required for the card to be offered raw. Submission involves a service and its applicable process and charges; compare current terms directly with the provider.

A population report is not a census of every copy in existence. Ungraded cards, cards submitted to other companies, and cards not represented under a service’s counting conventions may be outside the count. A low reported population can inform a scarcity comparison, but it does not by itself prove total scarcity or predict demand.

PSA says it had certified over 30 million collectibles since 1991. PSA’s eBay guide also displays a 76.8% share figure for PSA-graded items on the eBay marketplace. Both are PSA-published claims on an undated page; the visible page does not provide the graph’s date, full methodology, or a market-wide definition for the share figure. They should be read as PSA’s own statements, not independently established totals for all grading or all cards.

PSA’s guide quotes former MLB pitcher and collector Tom Candiotti saying that checking for alterations, grading, and placing a card in a holder puts buyers and sellers in a “comfort zone.” That is Candiotti’s opinion as published by PSA, not a guarantee that grading eliminates uncertainty or settles every disagreement about authenticity, condition, or value. A numerical grade is only one part of a card’s appeal; the CFA Institute’s discussion of sports memorabilia also notes that condition preferences can depend on the item—for example, visible wear may add appeal to a game-used object even as pristine condition is prized in other contexts.

How should a buyer compare cards and prices?

  1. Write down the exact identity. Record sport, athlete, year, set, card number, parallel or insert, and whether the card has an autograph or memorabilia feature.
  2. Match condition and grading details. Compare raw with raw or graded with graded where possible. For graded cards, note the company and grade; do not treat two labels as identical without considering the card and service.
  3. Look for realized sales of close matches. Compare completed transactions for the same card and similar condition rather than relying only on asking prices, category averages, or a headline auction record. The sources here do not establish a current value for any individual card.
  4. Check what supports authenticity and provenance. Read the seller’s description, inspect available images, and understand what a grading or authentication service did—and did not—certify.
  5. Calculate the transaction cost. Include applicable marketplace and payment fees, shipping, insurance, grading or authentication charges, and any storage costs. Fee schedules and buyer or seller protections can change, so verify the current terms before committing.
  6. Decide the purpose before setting a budget. A card for a personal collection or set completion can be chosen for its meaning to the collector; a resale purchase also depends on finding a future buyer at a price that covers costs and risk.

Where do marketplaces and services fit?

General marketplaces, specialist marketplaces, and auction houses can connect buyers and sellers, while grading and authentication providers assess eligible cards. Some platforms may also offer storage or vaulting. These functions are not the same: a marketplace listing is not itself proof of authenticity, and an announced partnership does not establish that a particular service is currently available to every user.

In an April 10, 2024 announcement, eBay and Collectors, PSA’s parent company, described a planned, more integrated U.S. experience for buying, selling, grading, and storage, including an option intended to let a seller list a card on eBay when it is graded. The announcement describes the planned arrangement; it is not sufficient evidence of the current user flow, eligibility, or availability.

Fanatics announced Fanatics Collect on July 16, 2024 as a marketplace for trading cards and memorabilia with fixed-price listings and auctions. The launch announcement described vaulting and raw-card grading and authentication through PSA, CGC, Beckett, SGC, and MBA, and said the PWCC brand was retired, with those services offered under Fanatics Collect. That announcement documents the launch setup, not necessarily current partnerships, service scope, fees, or geographic availability.

Before choosing a venue or service, check its current terms for fees, protections, shipping, storage, eligible items, geography, and dispute handling. The cited announcements do not provide a current, comparable basis for ranking providers by price, turnaround time, accuracy, or buyer protection.

What can drive collector demand—and what does it mean for personal finances?

Interest can follow athlete performance, major events, nostalgia, scarce or distinctive card attributes, and personal connection to a sport. The eBay search increases for Nick Kurtz and Jayden Daniels show how attention can shift quickly on one platform. The different category-level eBay price comparisons show that categories do not move uniformly. Neither type of evidence establishes what will happen next, and selected high-end sales do not demonstrate that typical buyers earn a profit.

For a household budget, treat a card purchase as discretionary collecting unless there is a well-supported reason to do otherwise. Set a limit that does not displace essential expenses or savings goals, and account for transaction costs and the possibility that a card may be difficult to sell at the expected price. The CFA Institute article notes that collector interest differs by sport and geography and presents personal knowledge and interest as useful guides; that is practical collecting advice, not an endorsement of sports cards as investments.

There is no verified, comprehensive market-wide total or forecast established by the sources cited here, and they do not provide a basis for estimating a typical collector’s return. For a personal decision, the more useful questions are whether the exact card is appealing at the asking price, whether comparable completed sales support that price, and whether the buyer can afford to hold it without relying on resale proceeds.
