The Simpsons: How Animation’s Royal Family Built a Lasting Business

The Simpsons’ commercial success spans television, licensing, home video and streaming. Official announcements show continued distribution, but not a current franchise-specific revenue or profit figure.

The Simpsons’ financial success is best understood as a franchise business built across television, licensed products, home video and, more recently, streaming—not as one verified all-time revenue figure. Its commercial reach has expanded beyond its original broadcast, but current official announcements do not disclose how much revenue or profit the show itself generates.

How the franchise’s business model changed over time

Period Commercial opportunity What the evidence establishes
Early franchise growth Licensed merchandise and character use A secondary historical overview documents licensing and merchandise activity, but does not establish a current audited annual revenue figure. Wikipedia’s franchise overview is useful here only for identifying those historical business categories.
Mature television distribution Continuing television distribution and home-video releases, including DVDs Home-video editions are a documented way viewers could buy the series. The sources do not establish present-day DVD sales or their contribution to franchise earnings. The franchise overview documents the category, not current availability or sales.
Current broadcast and streaming era New broadcast seasons alongside a streaming catalog and exclusive episodes Fox and Disney announced four additional seasons in 2025, while Disney+ announced three exclusive episodes for summer 2026. Neither announcement gives a Simpsons-specific revenue amount. Fox’s renewal announcement and Disney+’s announcement establish the programming plans.

Television kept the franchise in circulation

The show began as Fox programming and remains on Fox’s schedule for new episodes. On April 2, 2025, Fox Corporation announced a four-season renewal covering seasons 37 through 40 and continuing through the 2028–29 broadcast cycle. The announcement names 20th Television Animation, part of Disney Television Studios, as the production company. Fox’s announcement is evidence of the continuing production and broadcast relationship, not a breakdown of who receives what from each episode.

That distinction matters to the business story: the company producing or controlling franchise elements and the network carrying new episodes are not interchangeable roles. Long-running television also creates opportunities for continued distribution, but the reviewed sources do not quantify current syndication receipts, broadcast advertising income or their respective shares.

Licensing and merchandise extended the characters beyond television

Licensed merchandise and use of the characters in consumer products are documented parts of the franchise’s commercial history. Licensing can put a familiar property on products without making the rights holder the manufacturer or seller. But the amounts involved depend on what is being measured: consumers’ retail spending, license fees received by rights holders, a distributor’s receipts and profit after costs are different figures.

The historical overview available for this subject is secondary and does not establish an audited, current accounting series. Its legacy monetary claims therefore should not be treated as present-day annual sales, current licensing income or studio profit. The evidence supports identifying licensing as a revenue opportunity, not assigning it a current dollar value.

Home video offered a physical way to own episodes

The series has had home-video releases, including DVDs. Season sets and episode collections are a direct-to-consumer physical-product format: unlike a television airing or streaming catalog, a purchased edition gives the buyer a copy to keep, subject to the edition’s format and playback compatibility.

Current stock, regional editions and completeness by season were not established in the sources reviewed. Nor do they show whether home-video sales remain a material source of income. The existence of DVD releases demonstrates an additional monetization channel historically; it does not establish a current sales trend.

Disney+ adds streaming distribution and new exclusive episodes

In an announcement dated May 28, 2026, Disney+ said three all-new exclusive Simpsons episodes would stream that summer. It described its collection as including all 36 seasons, The Simpsons Movie, more than ten shorts and additional material. Disney+’s announcement shows how the franchise is being extended on the platform through both catalog availability and new platform-exclusive programming.

The announcement does not disclose a Simpsons-specific subscription price allocation, licensing payment, subscriber-acquisition figure or revenue total. A large catalog and exclusive episodes can support a streaming service’s offer, but those facts alone do not reveal the show’s financial contribution to the platform.

Why there is no reliable current all-time revenue total here

The reviewed official company materials do not provide a standalone current revenue or profit figure for The Simpsons. Fox’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, for the year ended June 30, 2025, is a corporate filing, not a franchise-level financial statement. Disney’s annual-report page is likewise corporate reporting context rather than a show-specific account. Fox’s annual reports and Disney’s annual reports index should not be read as disclosing the show’s standalone economics.

The Simpsons - The Complete Third Season

A defensible financial comparison would need comparable, franchise-specific figures across channels—such as licensing receipts, broadcast and syndication income, physical-product proceeds and streaming payments—along with the relevant costs. The sources reviewed provide none of those matched current amounts. Adding older merchandise estimates to company-wide revenue or treating retail spending as owner profit would produce a misleading total, not a measure of the franchise’s earnings.
