What the LiFT Scholarship provides
LiFT is intended to increase diversity in open source technology by helping selected applicants access technical training and certification. The Linux Foundation says it has awarded more than 4,250 scholarships since 2010. The award is described as access to Linux Foundation training courses and certification exams at no cost to recipients. The published information reviewed does not specify how 2027 recipients will choose courses, how long they will have to redeem an award, or whether other conditions will apply.
When applications open and what is known about 2027
The official program page and scholarship overview say the 2027 program will open in April 2027. They do not state an exact opening day, application deadline, notification date, or full application rules. The 2025 cycle is useful for context, but its timetable is not a 2027 schedule: applications opened April 1, closed at 11:59 p.m. PDT on April 30, and awardees were to be notified by June 30, 2025. 2025 application announcement
Eligibility: use the current application, not last cycle’s categories
The 2025 application listed 16 categories with different requirements. Examples included full-time students or IT professionals with less than two years of experience; students aged 16–19 in teen categories; women working full-time in IT with open source technology; unemployed IT professionals seeking work; and public or government employees or military members who used open source in their roles. When the 2027 application opens, compare its stated requirements category by category. Apply under a category only if you meet its actual criteria, including any age, role, employment, or career-stage requirements. Do not assume that a category from 2025 will be offered again.
What to expect from the application
The reviewed sources do not establish the 2027 application questions, scoring method, required materials, or selection criteria. The 2025 announcement asked applicants not to submit AI-composed or copied answers, warning that this could lower an application’s score or disqualify it, and encouraged original answers grounded in personal insights. For 2025, Linux Foundation Education reported more than 3,800 applications across 16 categories and more than 500 recipients from 117 countries. It also reported that recipients had an average age of 27. These are organization-reported figures for that cycle, not an independently audited selection rate or a reliable way to calculate an individual applicant’s odds. 2025 recipient announcement

- Read the new eligibility categories and compare their requirements with your own circumstances before choosing one.
- Review the application’s instructions for questions, supporting materials, and rules on writing assistance.
- Consider which Linux Foundation training or certification would support your goals, while recognizing that course selection and award redemption terms for 2027 have not yet been stated.
