The Secret to Saving Big on M4 Mac mini Storage Upgrades

The smartest M4 Mac mini storage upgrade is usually a fast external SSD, not Apple’s expensive factory capacity premium. Here are the speed, compatibility, backup, and repair trade-offs.

The best way to save on M4 Mac mini storage is usually to buy only the internal capacity you genuinely need, then add a fast external SSD. Apple’s factory storage upgrades can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, while the 2024 M4 Mac mini has fast rear Thunderbolt 4 ports designed for high-performance external storage.

There is also an unusual alternative: the internal SSD module is serviceable and replaceable in principle. But that is an enthusiast repair—not a simple expansion-slot upgrade—and compatibility, restoration, and service risks make it the wrong choice for most buyers.

The short answer

  • Most buyers: choose enough unified memory and the smallest sensible internal SSD, then add a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 external SSD.
  • Frequent travelers and minimalist setups: pay for the internal capacity you need from Apple.
  • Experienced repair enthusiasts: investigate an exact-compatible internal SSD-module replacement only after creating a complete recovery plan.
  • Everyone: keep an independent backup. Extra storage is not a backup.

On the regular M4 Mac mini, the three rear ports are Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports rated up to 40Gb/s. The two front USB-C ports support up to 10Gb/s. That makes the rear ports the right place for a fast working SSD. The M4 Pro model adds Thunderbolt 5, but a regular M4 Mac mini cannot reach Thunderbolt 5 speeds simply by connecting a Thunderbolt 5 drive.

How much Apple storage costs

The 2024 M4 Mac mini is offered with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options. M4 Pro configurations start at 512GB and extend to 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB.

On Apple’s U.S. configuration page for an M4 Pro example, the listed increments from 512GB were:

Storage increase Listed surcharge
512GB to 1TB +$300
512GB to 2TB +$500
512GB to 4TB +$1,500
512GB to 8TB +$3,500

These are U.S. prices shown on the cited configuration page when it was crawled in July 2026. Apple can change prices and available configurations, so check the page before buying. See the Apple M4 Pro configuration page and the full technical specifications.

The important comparison is not just the surcharge. Compare how much usable capacity each dollar buys. An external 2TB or 4TB SSD may provide substantially more capacity for the same money and can later be reused with another computer. The trade-off is an additional device, cable, and backup obligation.

Three ways to expand an M4 Mac mini

1. Buy more internal storage from Apple

This is the simplest and most self-contained option. The storage is installed at purchase, the desktop stays uncluttered, and the Mac is easier to travel with. It is particularly attractive if the computer will be moved frequently or if losing access to an external drive would disrupt work.

The disadvantage is cost. Apple’s premium may be worthwhile for convenience and the standard support path, but it is rarely the best capacity-per-dollar strategy.

2. Add an external SSD

This is the practical choice for most owners. It is reversible, requires no disassembly, and lets you buy capacity separately from the Mac. Use it for photo and video libraries, games, archives, development projects, virtual machines, and other large files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 10Gb/s USB-C SSD is generally sufficient for documents, backups, ordinary media, and many photo libraries. A USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 NVMe setup connected to a rear port is better for active video projects, large software trees, virtual machines, and frequently accessed libraries.

3. Replace the internal SSD module

This is technically possible in the 2024 M4 generation, but “replaceable” does not mean “easy to upgrade.” Apple’s Mac mini repair manual includes an SSD-module replacement procedure. Teardown reporting also identifies the storage as a removable module rather than soldered flash chips.

The computer must be opened, the replacement must match the exact machine, and the process may require initialization or system restoration. A damaged connector, incompatible module, failed reassembly, or unsuccessful restore can leave the Mac unusable until it is repaired again. Treat this as a service procedure for capable owners, not as the default buying strategy.

External SSD speeds: what actually matters

Connection Theoretical link speed Best use
Front USB-C/USB 3 Up to 10Gb/s Backups, documents, general files, and inexpensive SSD storage
Rear USB4/Thunderbolt 4 Up to 40Gb/s NVMe storage, active projects, large libraries, and virtual machines
Thunderbolt 5 on M4 Pro Up to 120Gb/s Higher-end storage setups with compatible peripherals

These are interface limits, not guaranteed application speeds. Real performance depends on the SSD, enclosure controller, cable, heat, workload, and sustained-write behavior. A USB-C plug alone does not tell you whether a device supports 10Gb/s, USB4, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt 5. A slower hub can also bottleneck a fast drive.

For demanding work, use a reputable NVMe SSD in a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 enclosure and connect it directly to a rear port with a short, certified high-speed cable. The OWC Express 1M2 is an example of the enclosure category. A Samsung 990 PRO is an example of a high-performance NVMe drive that could be used in a compatible enclosure; it is not a drop-in replacement for the Mac mini’s internal module.

Thunderbolt 5 products such as the OWC Envoy Ultra are most relevant to M4 Pro owners. They are generally unnecessary for the regular M4 Mac mini, whose rear ports are Thunderbolt 4.

External-storage setups by budget and workload

Cheapest sensible setup

Choose a 1TB or 2TB portable SSD for documents, photos, general media, and a secondary application or game library. Use a 10Gb/s connection when cost matters most, or connect through a rear Thunderbolt 4 port if the drive supports a faster interface.

Ready-made portable options, such as the models listed in SanDisk’s portable SSD range, are simpler than assembling a drive and enclosure. Check the specific model’s interface and advertised speed rather than relying on the phrase “USB-C.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best all-purpose performance setup

Pair a quality NVMe SSD with a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 enclosure. Connect it directly to a rear port, keep the enclosure ventilated, and test a large sustained transfer before entrusting it with important work.

Capacity-first setup

Use a 4TB or larger external SSD for media, games, archives, and project scratch space. Keep a separate backup; the large drive is still only one copy.

Desktop setup

A bus-powered or externally powered enclosure can sit beside the Mac mini. A hub or stand is worthwhile only when it provides useful ports or a properly designed SSD bay. A decorative accessory that merely claims to add “internal” storage does not change the Mac mini’s actual internal capacity.

How to format and prepare an external SSD

  1. Connect the SSD directly to the Mac mini.
  2. Open Disk Utility.
  3. Choose View > Show All Devices.
  4. Select the physical drive, not just an existing volume.
  5. Click Erase.
  6. Choose APFS for Mac-only use, especially an active working drive. Choose exFAT when the drive must routinely move between macOS and Windows.
  7. Give the drive a clear name and confirm the erase.
  8. Verify that it appears in Finder and Disk Utility.
  9. Copy a large test file before moving the only copy of important data.

Formatting erases the selected drive. Consult Apple’s current Disk Utility User Guide if the labels or available options differ in your macOS version.

What to move off the internal drive

Move large, deliberate storage consumers rather than relocating the entire home folder by default. Good candidates include:

  • Photos libraries.
  • Final Cut Pro libraries and media.
  • Music sample libraries.
  • Steam and other game libraries.
  • Virtual machines.
  • Large Downloads folders and project directories.
  • Archived documents, photos, and video.

Keep macOS, core applications, system support files, password databases, and critical documents that must remain available when the external drive is disconnected on the internal drive unless you have a specific reason to move them.

Some applications require libraries to remain mounted at a consistent path. If the external drive is disconnected, an application may report missing media or fail to find its library. Name the drive consistently, eject it before unplugging it, and avoid treating a removable working drive as though it were always present.

The internal replacement option: important reality checks

Apple’s repair manual confirms that an SSD-module procedure exists, but it does not turn the Mac mini into a consumer-friendly storage platform. Before considering the repair, verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the computer is an M4 or M4 Pro.
  • The exact model and board revision.
  • The replacement module’s capacity and type.
  • That the seller specifically supports the exact machine.
  • The seller’s return policy and technical support.
  • Whether initialization or restoration instructions are provided.

According to teardown reporting from MacRumors’ coverage of iFixit’s work, M4 and M4 Pro storage modules are not interchangeable. Do not assume that any standard M.2 NVMe drive will work. The Mac mini’s module is not simply a vacant slot for an ordinary desktop SSD.

  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Retain the original module. If a replacement requires firmware initialization or macOS restoration, you may need another compatible Mac and a recovery plan. Before opening the computer, create a complete backup, prepare for macOS reinstallation, and allow for downtime. Afterward, verify activation, user data, FileVault, and backup status.

Opening the Mac does not automatically void every warranty claim. However, damage caused by unauthorized or improper repair may not be covered, and third-party parts or modifications can complicate service. Coverage depends on the failure, Apple’s assessment, the plan terms, and applicable consumer law. AppleCare+ should not be treated as a guarantee that problems arising from a third-party modification will be covered.

Backup is part of the storage budget

An external SSD used for extra capacity is not automatically a backup. It can fail, be lost, accidentally erased, stolen, or corrupted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sensible minimum is:

  • Working data on the Mac or primary external SSD.
  • A separate Time Machine disk or other backup destination.
  • An additional off-site or cloud copy for irreplaceable files.

Use Apple’s Time Machine guidance to configure backups, and encrypt confidential external volumes and backup media. Keep FileVault enabled for the internal system volume, and store recovery keys or passwords somewhere accessible before erasing or moving data.

Which option fits you?

Reader Best choice Why
Desk-based buyer seeking value Base sensible internal storage plus external SSD Best capacity per dollar and easy to replace or reuse
Video editor or developer NVMe SSD in USB4/Thunderbolt 4 enclosure Better sustained performance for active projects
Frequent traveler More factory-installed internal storage One-box convenience and fewer disconnected-drive problems
Buyer who wants maximum simplicity Apple’s internal upgrade Least setup and the normal configuration path
Repair enthusiast Exact-compatible internal module, cautiously Potential capacity savings, but substantial technical and recovery risk

Common misconceptions

  • “The SSD is soldered and impossible to upgrade.” Incomplete. The internal module is replaceable in principle, but not casually expandable.
  • “Just replace the SSD; it is easy.” Misleading. Opening the compact computer, sourcing the right module, and potentially restoring the system make it a serious repair.
  • “Any M.2 NVMe drive works.” Unsupported. Exact compatibility is required.
  • “Every external SSD is slow.” False. A 10Gb/s portable drive and a 40Gb/s NVMe enclosure are different categories.
  • “More internal storage is always the best use of money.” Not necessarily. Unified memory, an external SSD, a faster enclosure, or a second backup drive may deliver more practical value.

For most owners, the winning strategy is straightforward: buy memory for the long term, purchase only as much internal storage as you truly need, and use a well-cooled external SSD for bulk capacity. Pay Apple’s internal-storage premium when portability and simplicity matter more than capacity-per-dollar; consider an internal replacement only if you knowingly accept the repair and recovery risks.
