MINISO is a China-founded retailer. According to the company’s brand profile, founder Guofu Ye encountered specialty shops selling attractive, inexpensive goods during overseas travel, then opened MINISO’s first shopping-center store in Guangzhou in November 2013. That is MINISO’s own account of its origins.
The Japanese association is understandable: the brand’s visual presentation and early positioning evoke the specialty-goods retail format familiar in Japan. But that impression should not be mistaken for the company’s national origin.

The company also says design, quality and affordability are central to its portfolio. Character collaborations add emotional pull
Licensed characters give familiar designs a place in ordinary product categories, while limited or changing assortments can make browsing feel fresh. MINISO says it has established partnerships with more than 150 global IPs since 2020 and sold over 800 million IP-driven products cumulatively over that period. These are company-reported totals in its February 4, 2026 update, not independent measures of customer preference or repeat demand.

MINISO’s growth has been built around physical retail rather than a shopping experience defined only by a website. In company materials, the store is where assortment, display and discovery come together. That format gives the brand a way to present ordinary goods and character products side by side, though the available figures do not establish how much each element contributes to sales or growth.

How large is MINISO’s global footprint?
Company-reported figures show substantial expansion, but the dates and geographic descriptions differ. The earlier figure counts countries and regions; the later annual-report figure uses different wording, so the totals should not be read as a like-for-like measurement of geographic reach.

What is MINISO LAND?
MINISO LAND is the company’s experience-led store format for displaying, interacting with and selling IP merchandise. In its February 4, 2026 update, MINISO said it planned to accelerate the format’s global rollout during 2026. That was a plan announced by the company, not evidence that a global rollout had already been completed.
The same update describes a growing proprietary-IP pipeline, naming YOYO, Kumaru, Angry Amiee and Carrot Street, alongside a creator-incubation program. These are strategic initiatives announced by MINISO; the announcement does not independently establish that the characters have achieved lasting popularity.

What is the “good” behind MINISO’s rise—and what remains unproven?
The strongest explanation is the combination: a varied, accessible-looking assortment gives shoppers reasons to browse, while recognizable characters and IP-themed products add emotional and collectible appeal. The physical store format puts those elements together in a way that can turn routine shopping into discovery. MINISO’s own founder and CEO, Guofu Ye, summarized the company’s IP focus in the February 2026 update: “IP represents emotion, culture, and meaning. The next stage of competition will be defined by who understands culture and IP more deeply.”
For a shopper deciding whether MINISO is worth a visit, the practical takeaway is to treat its reputation as a promise of variety and discovery, not a guarantee that every product offers superior quality or value. The cited company materials do not independently verify customer sentiment, product performance, comparative prices or market share. A specific purchase is best judged on its own price, materials and intended use.
