Steve Cohen is the only MLB owner for whom the supplied figures support a dated personal-wealth comparison: Forbes estimated his net worth at $23 billion as of March 12, 2026, in its 2026 list of the world’s richest sports team owners. That is an estimate, not an audited statement—and the available figures do not support a reliable ranking of every MLB owner.
What the available figures say about MLB owners’ wealth
Forbes identifies Cohen as the owner of the New York Mets and lists him at $23 billion in its 2026 sports-team-owner ranking. The date matters: the figure is a snapshot, and Forbes also displays a separate real-time estimate on Cohen’s profile. For a year-specific comparison, use the dated list estimate rather than treating a changing real-time figure as interchangeable. Forbes’ Steve Cohen profile provides both figures.
This evidence does not establish a complete, consistently dated ranking of MLB owners. Wealth estimates may use different dates and methods, and team control can belong to an individual, a family, a corporation, or an investor group. Without comparable estimates for each owner and clarity about the ownership interests counted, a league-wide order would imply more precision than the figures support.
Owner wealth is not the same as team finances
A franchise’s revenue, estimated value, and payroll describe the team or its operations—not the owner’s personal net worth. They should not be added to an owner’s wealth or used as substitutes for a personal estimate.

Dodgers revenue and ownership
Forbes estimates the Los Angeles Dodgers generated $850 million in revenue in 2025, making them MLB’s highest-revenue team in that estimate. That is a team-level figure, not Mark Walter’s personal wealth. Forbes discusses Walter’s wealth separately and identifies him in connection with the Dodgers; the team’s revenue does not become his personal net worth simply because of that ownership relationship. See the Forbes Dodgers profile and Forbes’ Mark Walter profile.
Payroll and popularity
Payroll measures spending on players, not an owner’s assets. A May 9, 2025 Forbes article, citing Roster Resource projections, reported projected 2025 payrolls of $390 million for the Dodgers and $332 million for the Mets. The same article described a survey of 4,000 baseball fans about owner popularity. Neither payroll projections nor survey responses measure personal wealth, and spending alone does not establish future success. Forbes’ report on the survey and projected payrolls covers those separate measures.

How to read an owner net-worth ranking
- Check the date. A net-worth estimate is tied to a point in time; a dated annual list and a live estimate can differ.
- Check whose wealth is being counted. An owner may control a team through a family, company, or investment group, so the franchise’s full value is not necessarily that individual’s asset.
- Keep categories separate. Personal net worth, franchise valuation, team revenue, and payroll answer different questions.
- Look for comparable sourcing. A ranking is meaningful only if its estimates use a consistent date and approach. The figures cited here do not provide that coverage across all MLB owners.
