The Real Cost of Keeping $45,000 in a Big-Bank Savings Account Through 2027

A dated 0.01% APY example earns about $4.50 on $45,000 in a year, while a $5 monthly fee can total $60 if charged every month. Future rates through 2027 are unknown.

There is no reliable way to know today how much $45,000 will earn at a big bank through the end of 2027: savings rates can change. A dated illustration shows why the rate and monthly fee matter. Chase listed a variable 0.01% APY for its savings account, effective June 26, 2026. At that rate, $45,000 earns about $4.50 over one year before taxes, assuming the balance and rate stay unchanged. The account’s $5 monthly fee can be avoided under stated conditions, including maintaining at least $300 at the beginning of each day.

What $45,000 earns at a big bank

Chase’s consumer savings offer page listed 0.01% APY for all balances in all states, effective June 26, 2026. The rate is variable and subject to change. At an unchanged $45,000 balance, 0.01% APY produces about $4.50 in interest over one year. That is a simple illustration, not a promise of what the account will pay through 2027. The FDIC’s national savings rate was 0.39% in its table revised March 16, 2026. The FDIC says this benchmark is based on the $2,500 product tier; it is a national statistic, not a survey of the best available rates or a current quote for a particular account. At an unchanged 0.39%, $45,000 would earn roughly $175.50 in simple interest over one year. The roughly $171 difference from the 0.01% illustration is arithmetic, not a forecast. FDIC national rates

How the monthly fee changes the picture

Chase Savings lists a $5 monthly service fee, or $60 over 12 months if charged every month. Its stated waiver conditions include keeping at least $300 in the account at the beginning of each day. A continuously maintained $45,000 balance meets that particular condition; account holders should check the full terms and their circumstances rather than assume a fee will or will not apply. Wells Fargo’s Way2Save account also lists a $5 monthly service fee and waiver routes that include a $300 minimum daily balance or qualifying automatic transfers. The retrieved fee page does not establish its APY, so it cannot support a rate comparison. Wells Fargo Way2Save fees

What a through-2027 estimate can—and cannot—tell you

To calculate a future total, you would need the account’s APY over time, the dates and amounts of deposits or withdrawals, how interest is credited, and whether any fees are charged. The cited Chase rate is dated June 26, 2026; the FDIC benchmark is dated March 16, 2026. Neither establishes the rates that will apply from October 3, 2026 through December 31, 2027.

The Federal Reserve reported an effective federal funds rate of 3.88% on October 1, 2026, in its H.15 release dated October 2, 2026. That is a policy-market benchmark, not the APY a consumer savings account pays, and it does not predict a bank’s future deposit rate. Federal Reserve H.15 release

“Real cost” can refer to interest forgone compared with another account, fees paid, or purchasing power lost to inflation. The figures above address only dated account-rate illustrations and fee exposure; they do not calculate inflation-adjusted returns. Any comparison should use an explicitly stated period and inflation measure rather than treating nominal interest as a complete measure of purchasing-power change.

How to evaluate where to keep the money

Compare the terms that determine both earnings and access, rather than choosing on APY alone:

  • Rate and date: Confirm the APY for your location and balance, and whether it is variable or fixed. A variable savings APY can change.
  • Fees and waivers: Check the monthly fee and each exact waiver condition, including balance measurement and qualifying transfer requirements.
  • Access: Consider how quickly you can withdraw or transfer funds and whether the account’s convenience suits your needs.
  • Protection: Verify applicable FDIC or NCUA insurance and ownership limits for the account and institution.

A higher quoted rate is not a guaranteed 2027 return, and an account with a fee may still avoid that fee if you meet its waiver terms. Compare live disclosures before moving money.
