Re:

The RAM shortage is here to stay, raising prices on PCs and phones

AI infrastructure is redirecting memory capacity toward HBM and server products, keeping consumer RAM tight. Here is what that means for PC, laptop and smartphone prices—and how to decide whether to buy now.

Short answer: memory is likely to remain structurally tight through at least 2027, because AI infrastructure is absorbing high-value HBM, server DRAM and enterprise SSD capacity. That does not mean RAM prices will rise forever or increase every quarter. Consumer prices can stabilize or fall if PC and phone demand weakens, inventories recover or new capacity arrives—but buyers should not assume that waiting guarantees a bargain.

Why RAM is expensive now

The current squeeze is not simply a matter of AI systems “using all the RAM.” The more accurate explanation is that AI infrastructure has changed what memory manufacturers prioritize.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

AI accelerators require enormous quantities of high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Servers running AI workloads also need large amounts of high-capacity DDR5 and other specialized memory. Those products can generate more revenue than ordinary PC modules or phone memory, and major customers often negotiate long-term supply agreements. Manufacturers therefore have a strong incentive to direct scarce production toward HBM and server products.

That leaves PC makers, phone manufacturers and memory-module distributors competing for the remaining supply. Prices generally rise first in volume contracts, then flow through to device makers, distributors, retailers and eventually consumers.

Samsung’s July 2026 results identified HBM, server DRAM and enterprise SSD demand as major sources of continued undersupply in the second half of 2026, even while PC and mobile demand showed some moderation.

What is—and is not—in short supply?

“RAM” covers several technically different products. A shortage in one category does not automatically mean every type will be equally scarce.

Memory type Main uses Directly interchangeable?
DDR4 and DDR5 Desktop PCs, laptops and servers No
LPDDR4X and LPDDR5X Smartphones and thin laptops No
HBM AI accelerators and high-performance computing No
NAND flash SSDs and phone storage No; it is storage, not working memory

HBM is a DRAM product, but it is stacked and packaged beside an accelerator. It is not a removable desktop module. Nor can a finished HBM package simply be diverted into a laptop or phone.

The connection is upstream: HBM consumes DRAM dies, wafer capacity, advanced packaging and engineering resources. Server memory also consumes manufacturing capacity that could otherwise serve conventional products.

How AI demand reaches ordinary buyers

  1. AI accelerators require large amounts of HBM for data movement at very high bandwidth.
  2. HBM uses advanced DRAM dies and complicated stacking and packaging processes.
  3. AI servers require substantial quantities of high-capacity server DRAM and enterprise SSDs.
  4. Suppliers prioritize these products because AI customers can pay more and provide relatively predictable demand.
  5. Ordinary DDR4, DDR5 and mobile LPDDR output becomes tighter relative to demand.
  6. PC and smartphone manufacturers compete for the remaining allocation.
  7. Higher contract costs eventually appear in device configurations, retail memory kits or both.

TrendForce’s July 2026 DRAM analysis said HBM and SOCAMM-related demand was consuming increasing wafer capacity and squeezing conventional server-memory availability. Its mobile DRAM analysis described similar pressure on memory used in smartphones.

Why manufacturers cannot fix the problem quickly

Memory fabs are not factories that can be expanded instantly when prices rise. New capacity requires site construction, equipment installation, process qualification, yield improvement and customer validation. The timeline is measured in years, not months.

Even a completed expansion may not produce the type of memory a consumer needs. A supplier must choose how to allocate capacity among commodity DRAM, server DRAM, HBM and NAND. HBM additionally depends on advanced packaging and qualification with accelerator customers.

Existing fabs can sometimes be converted, but conversion can temporarily reduce output and may make economic sense only for particular product categories. Memory companies are also cautious because the industry has a history of severe boom-and-bust cycles: investing too aggressively can create excess supply and collapse prices.

Micron said its fiscal 2027 construction-related capital expenditure was expected to rise by more than $10 billion year over year, with investment directed toward HBM and DRAM capacity. The company expects first wafer output from its first new Idaho fab in mid-2027 and from a second fab in late 2028, according to its announced construction timetable. Those dates illustrate why announced investment does not immediately relieve pressure in 2026.

How long will the shortage last?

The strongest current evidence points to a prolonged imbalance, but not permanent scarcity.

  • Micron: In its June 24, 2026 prepared remarks, the company said supply-demand conditions for both DRAM and NAND should remain tight beyond calendar 2027.
  • Samsung: Its July 2026 outlook called for continued undersupply of HBM, server DRAM and enterprise SSDs in the second half of 2026, despite some moderation in PC and mobile demand.
  • TrendForce: Its July bulletin said the growing share of wafer capacity devoted to HBM and newer server-memory products could prolong tight conventional DRAM conditions into 2027.
  • SK hynix: Its 2026 business outlook also described favorable pricing conditions for DRAM and NAND, though it is an interested party to the market.

These forecasts support the phrase “here to stay” only if it means likely to remain structurally tight for several years. They do not prove that prices will rise continuously.

Three plausible paths

Base case: Supply remains tight through 2027, with uneven pricing and occasional relief in particular capacities or regions.

More favorable supply case: New wafer output, better HBM yields and weaker consumer demand cause prices to stabilize before the overall shortage is fully resolved.

More difficult demand case: AI infrastructure spending continues to grow faster than new memory output, keeping prices elevated beyond 2027.

The key distinction is between tight supply, rising prices and a shortage ending. A market can remain undersupplied while price growth slows because buyers have reached their affordability limits. Tom’s Hardware, citing TrendForce, reported signs that price increases were moderating as consumers delayed purchases, even while DRAM and NAND prices continued climbing in the third quarter of 2026.

What happens to PC prices?

A large increase in memory-component prices does not translate mechanically into the same percentage increase in a laptop or desktop. Memory is only one part of a device’s bill of materials, and manufacturers may respond in several ways.

  • Raise the price of a complete PC or laptop.
  • Keep the headline price but offer less memory in the base configuration.
  • Charge a larger premium for 32GB or higher capacities.
  • Reduce production targets or discontinue low-margin configurations.
  • Use soldered memory to control allocation, even though that reduces future upgradeability.
  • Pass through only part of the increase by absorbing some cost in margins.

The effect depends on the device’s memory capacity, whether its maker secured supply under a long-term contract, its total component cost, currency movements, tariffs, shipping and retailer margins. A small PC builder buying modules at retail can be exposed much sooner than a large OEM with contracted inventory.

Retail listings can also exaggerate the apparent market increase. Distributors may have little stock, popular capacities may sell out first, and older standards such as DDR4 can become unusually difficult to source. Branded kits also include testing, packaging, heat spreaders and retailer margins.

Reported examples show the scale of possible volatility, not a universal price. Euronews reported a Hong Kong example in which a 16GB kit rose from roughly HK$300–400 to about HK$1,500, while Tom’s Hardware reported a product-specific G.Skill example rising from about $100 to roughly $600. These are market- and product-specific observations, not an average U.S. retail price.

What happens to smartphone prices?

Phones are exposed through LPDDR, not desktop DDR4 or DDR5. Memory is normally soldered, so buyers cannot add capacity later. That makes the original configuration more important than it is on an upgradeable desktop.

Manufacturers may respond by raising handset prices, reducing base-model RAM, delaying launches, cutting production or moving higher-memory configurations into premium tiers. Entry-level and midrange phones are particularly vulnerable because their margins are thinner. Premium brands may have more purchasing power and customers who are less sensitive to modest price increases.

  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8

Software optimization can reduce how much physical memory a phone needs, but it cannot eliminate component costs. Buyers should judge RAM alongside the processor, storage speed, software support and expected lifespan. A larger RAM number is not automatically a proportional performance improvement.

Samsung’s outlook described robust server-memory demand alongside some moderation in mobile demand. That consumer weakness may reduce pressure at the margin, but it does not remove the competition for manufacturing capacity.

Is this an allocation problem or a capacity problem?

It is all three of the following:

  1. Allocation shortage: existing capacity is being directed toward HBM and server products.
  2. Product-mix shortage: total DRAM output may be adequate while a buyer cannot find a particular density, DDR generation or LPDDR grade.
  3. Absolute capacity shortage: total memory demand is also growing, especially because AI servers use more memory per system.

This explains why one type of memory can disappear while another remains available. It also explains why a new fab may not immediately lower the price of the exact DDR4, DDR5 or LPDDR5X configuration a consumer needs.

Could Chinese suppliers solve the shortage?

Chinese producer CXMT and other suppliers could add competition in conventional DRAM, but they are not a guaranteed short-term solution. The practical impact depends on production scale, process competitiveness, access to equipment, export controls, customer qualification, regional availability and whether the new output matches demand for DDR4, DDR5 or LPDDR.

TrendForce’s DRAM coverage identifies CXMT as a potential source of additional conventional supply while still describing near-term conditions as constrained. TechRadar Pro has reported that PC makers were considering CXMT memory. That is an emerging supply development, not evidence that global consumer prices will quickly return to normal.

Should you buy RAM now or wait?

Buy now if:

  • You need the upgrade for work, gaming or production within the next few months.
  • Your system supports only a small number of compatible modules.
  • You use an older or increasingly difficult-to-source standard such as DDR4.
  • The current price is acceptable compared with recent prices and the upgrade solves a real problem.
  • You are building a complete PC and want to avoid a later compatibility or availability problem.

Wait if:

  • The purchase is discretionary and your current system is adequate.
  • You expect a new CPU platform, laptop generation or phone launch soon.
  • You are choosing common DDR5 with several capacities and suppliers available.
  • The product is temporarily inflated by a stockout or opportunistic listing.
  • You can tolerate the possibility that prices remain high or rise again.

Waiting is not a guaranteed bargain. Compare the price with recent history, buy only the capacity you need and avoid paying a large premium for cosmetic features or marginal speed gains.

Practical advice by product

Desktop upgrades and new builds

  • Prioritize capacity over small frequency differences when prices are high.
  • Check your motherboard’s qualified vendor list and supported memory density.
  • Buy a matched kit rather than combining unrelated modules.
  • Do not assume two kits with the same advertised speed will operate reliably together.
  • For DDR5, check BIOS maturity and the board’s support for the desired module configuration.
  • Before paying a premium for DDR4, consider whether a used or refurbished complete PC is better value than upgrading an aging platform.
  • Avoid “future-proofing” with excessive capacity while prices are unusually inflated.

Laptops

  • Prefer replaceable SODIMMs if repairability and long-term flexibility matter.
  • Treat soldered RAM as a permanent purchase decision.
  • Check whether the laptop has two slots, one soldered module plus one slot, or no upgrade path.
  • Compare the manufacturer’s 16GB-to-32GB upgrade premium with the cost and difficulty of replacing the system later.

Smartphones

  • Do not choose solely by advertised RAM; processor performance, storage and software support also matter.
  • Prioritize adequate storage because it usually cannot be upgraded.
  • For ordinary use, 8GB or 12GB may be sufficient depending on the software and expected lifespan.
  • Compare the exact RAM and storage variant sold in your region.
  • Watch for base-model RAM reductions hidden behind an unchanged headline price.

Business procurement

IT teams should budget for configuration changes rather than assuming a simple component surcharge. Confirm supplier allocations, lead times, warranty terms and whether a quoted configuration is actually reserved. Standardizing on upgradeable systems can provide more flexibility, but only if the platform’s supported memory capacity and module availability are documented.

What would signal that the shortage is easing?

Readers and procurement teams should watch for several signals rather than one dramatic headline:

  • Slower HBM and server-memory order growth.
  • New-fab wafer output reaching commercial volume.
  • Improved HBM yields and packaging capacity.
  • Rising inventory at suppliers and distributors.
  • Falling contract prices across more than one memory category.
  • PC and smartphone production cuts that materially reduce demand.
  • Weaker AI-infrastructure capital spending.

Micron expects HBM4E volume production in calendar 2027, while Samsung has said it is expanding HBM4 and expects HBM sales to more than triple in 2026 versus 2025. Those company forecasts show where investment is going; they do not guarantee that consumer DDR or LPDDR supply will loosen on the same schedule.
