The Onion Won the Infowars Auction, but the Sale Was Rejected

The Onion was named the winning bidder for Infowars parent-company assets, but the proposed sale was rejected. A later temporary-license plan was separate and was paused by a Texas court, according to April 2026 reporting.

The Onion’s parent company was named the winning bidder in November 2024, but the bankruptcy judge rejected the proposed sale the following month. The Onion did not thereby acquire Infowars.

How the auction and later license proposal differ

Route What was proposed Reported status
November 2024 bankruptcy auction The Onion’s parent, Global Tetrahedron, was named the winning bidder for assets of Free Speech Systems, Infowars’ parent company. The auction was part of efforts to satisfy defamation judgments. In December 2024, Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez rejected the proposed sale after finding problems with the auction process and the treatment of bids, according to reporting by Engadget and PBS NewsHour.
April 2026 receiver proposal A separate plan would have temporarily licensed Infowars intellectual property from a state-appointed receiver while the receiver worked toward liquidation. The Associated Press reported that a Texas court paused the proposal amid new court proceedings. The reporting cited here does not establish whether a later order resolved the pause.

What Ben Collins meant by “clear next steps”

Engadget’s headline attributed the phrase “clear next steps to complete the sale” to Onion CEO Ben Collins. That was Collins’s characterization of the process at the time, not a court finding or confirmation that a transfer had taken place. The proposed auction sale was subsequently rejected, and the later license proposal was a different legal route—not completion of the 2024 purchase.

Why the distinction matters financially

A winning bid is not the same as a completed sale. Here, the bankruptcy court’s rejection meant the auction result alone did not transfer the assets to The Onion. Nor should the later proposal be described as a sale: it concerned a temporary license of intellectual property through a receiver.

There is no settled completed purchase price to report from these proceedings. The available reporting does not establish a reliable auction price that should be treated as the price of a completed transaction.

A separate Texas judgment update

On August 21, 2026, the Associated Press reported that a Texas appeals court reduced a separate Texas judgment against Alex Jones to about $6 million. AP said the ruling did not affect the separate Connecticut judgment. That appellate decision is part of the broader financial and legal backdrop, but it did not decide whether Infowars’ assets were sold or whether the proposed license could proceed.
