The best-documented vintage T-shirt auction result found is a 1967 Grateful Dead shirt that sold through Sotheby’s in 2021 for $17,640. That is the reported auction result; the buyer’s total including fees was reported separately at about $19,300. The available evidence supports two notable Sotheby’s sales—not a verified ranking of 11 shirts—so the figures below distinguish documented auction-house results from other kinds of sales.
Documented vintage T-shirt auction results
These are the two best-supported auction-house results identified in published reporting. Both were sold through Sotheby’s in 2021 and came from the collection of Grateful Dead sound engineer Dan Healy.
| Shirt | Sale and reported price | What is documented |
|---|---|---|
| 1967 Grateful Dead shirt designed by Allan “Gut” Terk | $17,640 auction result; $19,315.80 buyer total including fees and expenses, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The Art Newspaper reports a total of $19,300 with fees. | Sold at Sotheby’s in October 2021. It is described as one of the earliest or among the first mass-produced Grateful Dead shirts, not definitively the band’s first T-shirt. Winning bidder Bo Bushnell said he bought it to keep Terk’s memory and history together, as reported by The Art Newspaper. |
| 1977 Grateful Dead shirt associated with the Cornell show | $15,120, as reported by The Boston Globe; The Art Newspaper rounds the figure to $15,000. | Another shirt from Healy’s collection, featuring the band’s skull-and-lightning-bolt “Steal Your Face” logo. Reporting connects it with the band’s 1977 Cornell show. |
The reports do not establish a single reconciled buyer total for the second shirt. More generally, an auction result, a price inclusive of the buyer’s premium, and the buyer’s final cost are different measures. The sources give both the $17,640 result and the higher fee-inclusive total for the 1967 shirt; they should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why these shirts drew collector interest
The reporting gives several details that help explain the shirts’ appeal, but it does not prove that any one feature caused a particular price. The 1967 shirt is tied to Terk’s design and the early history of Grateful Dead merchandise. The other is connected with a specific performance and carries a recognizable band logo. Both came with provenance linking them to Healy’s collection.

Rarity, condition, design history, provenance, and a connection to a memorable event can all matter to collectors. The available reports do not provide enough comparable condition detail to isolate the effect of condition on these results or to quantify how much any factor added to the price.
Why this is not an 11-shirt ranking
The headline’s promised count cannot be substantiated from the documented results available here. Published reporting supports two distinct Sotheby’s sales, not eleven individually verified auction-house prices. Filling the remaining places with asking prices, marketplace transactions, or unverified figures would make the ranking misleading.

Other reported sales belong to different datasets and should not be silently combined with these auction-house results:
- Marketplace auction: A 1979 Led Zeppelin Knebworth shirt reportedly sold for $10,000 on eBay in 2011. The San Francisco Chronicle describes it as the prior record before the 2021 Sotheby’s sale. It is an eBay transaction, not an auction-house result.
- Specialist auction in another currency: Weber Auction reported successful tender prices in its August 30–31, 2025 sale of ¥600,000 for a 1990s Rage Against the Machine shirt and ¥583,209 for an 1980s Red Hot Chili Peppers shirt. The figures do not establish a global all-time ranking or a direct comparison with the Sotheby’s results.
- eBay roundup: Defunkd’s 2025 roundup covers eBay sales and says it attempts to verify transactions while not authenticating the shirts. Its highest reported sale was a Wolfman Mosquito Head shirt at $5,000. That is marketplace context, not an auction-house record.
What auction prices do—and do not—tell you
A high reported sale establishes what a particular buyer paid under a particular sale’s terms; it does not set a reliable value for every similar shirt. A buyer evaluating vintage memorabilia also needs to consider how confidently the item’s identity, history, and condition are documented. Those details are not fully established for the two shirts in the news reports, and their absence limits direct comparisons.

Auction-house condition information also has limits. Julien’s Auctions’ guidance says condition reports reflect staff opinions, encourages bidders to request reports to assess condition, provenance, and validity, and states that lots are sold as-is. That is general auction guidance, not a condition assessment of either Sotheby’s shirt.
For any reported collectible price, check which number is being quoted, what fees it includes, where and when the sale happened, and whether the item’s provenance and condition are described. Without those distinctions, a list of “most expensive” shirts can mix unlike transactions and give a false impression of a settled record.
