There is no well-supported single “most expensive private jet” price for 2023: a manufacturer’s aircraft price is not the same as the cost of a finished, custom VIP aircraft. The clearest comparable published figures in a 2023 chart are $96.5 million for the Boeing BBJ 3 and $82 million for the Airbus ACJ319, both manufacturer list prices—not all-in completed-aircraft costs. Converted airliners such as Boeing’s BBJ 787s belong to a different comparison class, and their bespoke completion costs are not established by the available published figures.
What “most expensive” means for a private jet
A price comparison is useful only if it says what the price includes. For business aircraft, three different figures are often blurred together:
- Manufacturer list price: the aircraft’s published price before a buyer’s bespoke cabin completion and other custom systems.
- Typically equipped price: a reference price for an aircraft configured with a typical set of equipment. It still may not include a custom VIP interior.
- Completed VIP aircraft cost: the cost of the aircraft as delivered with its selected interior and systems. For bespoke or airline-derived aircraft, that total can differ substantially from a basic airframe price.
Business Jet Traveler’s 2023 chart labels its figures as manufacturer list prices for current or most-recently produced models. It does not provide comparable all-in completion costs. Boeing’s announcements describe cabin customization and aircraft orders, but do not publish an all-in price for each finished aircraft. For that reason, the figures below are reported price anchors, not a definitive ranking of completed private jets.

These are not equivalent to the amount a buyer necessarily pays for a finished aircraft: equipment, cabin choices, and completion work are not captured as a comparable all-in figure in the chart. They do establish that, on this specific 2023 list-price basis, the BBJ 3 is listed above the ACJ319.

Why converted airliners are a separate price comparison
Boeing Business Jets (BBJ) also includes VIP versions of large commercial aircraft. Those aircraft can provide a much larger cabin and long-range capability, but they are not directly comparable to purpose-built business jets on an airframe list price alone. The final VIP aircraft depends on its completion, and Boeing’s public material does not give a consistently comparable finished price for each model.
In October 2019, Boeing announced an order for two BBJ 787-9 aircraft with a combined list-price value of $564 million. That is a dated combined value for two aircraft—not a 2023 quote, a per-aircraft completed price, or a like-for-like all-in cost. Boeing described the 787-9 as offering extensive customization, but did not disclose a completed VIP price in that release.

In May 2023, Boeing documented VIP orders for the BBJ 737-7 and BBJ 787-8, and an option for the BBJ 777-9. The release did not establish a ranking by completed price. Boeing stated manufacturer-stated ranges of up to 6,600 nautical miles for the BBJ 737-7, up to 9,945 nautical miles for the BBJ 787-8, and up to 11,025 nautical miles for the BBJ 777-9. These are the manufacturer’s figures, not independently verified operational results.
Customization changes the buyer’s finished aircraft
A list price does not describe the interior a particular owner receives. Boeing’s BBJ Select program, announced in October 2023 for the BBJ 737-7, offered 144 modular cabin combinations across three color palettes. It was intended to offer pre-designed cabin choices rather than require a fully bespoke interior. Boeing did not publish a comparable all-in price list for those completed configurations.

The distinction matters for a personal-finance comparison: two aircraft with the same model name can represent different delivered products when their interiors and systems differ. A quoted airframe or manufacturer price should therefore not be presented as the cost of a turnkey luxury jet unless the source explicitly says the completion is included.

- Check the price basis. Look for “manufacturer list,” “typically equipped,” or a clearly defined completed-aircraft cost.
- Check the date and scope. A combined order value from 2019 is not a 2023 model quote, and a price for two aircraft is not a single-aircraft price.
- Separate aircraft classes. Purpose-built business jets and converted airliners should not be ranked together using unmatched price figures.
- Look for what completion includes. If an article gives no specification for cabin work or systems, it has not established an all-in VIP cost.
A 2026 price comparison by CRAFT illustrates why methodology matters, but it is not a source for 2023 prices: it describes its figures as typically equipped prices, excludes custom interiors and operating costs, and limits its list to in-production purpose-built business jets rather than converted airliners. Those boundaries differ from a completed-aircraft comparison.
