There is no defensible, consistently comparable list of the 20 most expensive pieces of jewelry ever made in the available auction records. The rankings often mix individual jewels with loose diamonds and entire collections, and they may treat estimates as sale prices. A more reliable way to compare headline-making results is to identify the sale, the auction house, the lot, and the currency—and to keep category records separate from claims about an overall record.
Why a definitive top 20 is difficult to establish
“Piece of jewelry” can mean several different things at auction: a mounted ring, a pair of earrings sold as one lot, a loose gemstone, or a collection containing hundreds of items. Those are not equivalent comparison units. A list that ranks them together can look precise while answering no consistent question.

Sale figures also need careful handling. A presale estimate is not a realized price, and a report’s currency conversion is not necessarily a like-for-like basis for ranking sales made in different years. Record descriptions may refer only to a category, a particular auction house, a country, or a single year. For example, a jewel described as the most expensive sold in 2023 should not be presented as the all-time leader today.
Documented high-value auction results
The examples below are verified sale results reported by the named auction house or, for the 2026 result, by the Associated Press. They are not a ranked top 20, and the different lot types mean they should not be read as a strict price comparison.

| Jewel or sale | What was sold | Sale and reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Pink Star | A pink diamond sold as a single jewel | Sotheby’s Hong Kong, April 2017: HK$553,037,500, reported by Sotheby’s as approximately US$71.2 million. Sotheby’s sale record. |
| Apollo and Artemis | A pair of diamond earrings sold together | Sotheby’s Geneva, 2017: US$57,425,478. Sotheby’s described the result as the most valuable pair of earrings sold at auction, a category-specific claim. Sotheby’s account. |
| Bleu Royal | A 17.61-carat fancy vivid blue diamond ring | Christie’s, November 2023: more than US$44 million. Christie’s described it as the most expensive jewel of 2023, not as a current all-time record. Christie’s sale report. |
| Princie Diamond | A 34.65-carat fancy intense pink Golconda diamond | Christie’s New York, 2013: US$39,323,750. Christie’s called it a record for any jewel sold by the house and in the United States at that time. Christie’s lot record. |
| 101.73-carat pear-shaped diamond | A D-color, flawless diamond | Christie’s, 2014: US$26.7 million. Christie’s described it then as a record for a colorless diamond at auction. Christie’s report. |
| Ocean Dream | A 5.5-carat blue-green diamond | Christie’s Geneva, May 2026: more than 13.5 million Swiss francs, reported as US$17.3 million by the Associated Press. Associated Press report. |
Keep the Elizabeth Taylor result separate
Christie’s reported that 269 pieces from Elizabeth Taylor’s collection brought a total of US$137,235,575 in December 2011. Guinness World Records identifies it as the most expensive jewelry collection sold at auction. That is a collection total, not the sale price of one jewel, so it does not belong in a ranking of individual pieces. Christie’s collection account; Guinness World Records.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare jewelry auction prices fairly
- Compare completed sales. Estimates and unsold lots are not realized prices. In May 2026, for example, the Associated Press reported the Ocean Dream’s sale, while a Sotheby’s blue diamond lot in Geneva the day before went unsold.
- Set a rule for loose gemstones. Decide whether unset diamonds count alongside mounted jewelry, then apply that rule consistently.
- Rank individual lots separately from collections. A pair sold together is one auction lot; a multi-item collection is a different unit again.
- Retain the reported currency and sale date. If a source provides a dollar conversion, label it as that source’s reported conversion rather than implying a current or inflation-adjusted value.
- Read record claims narrowly. “Most valuable earrings” is a category record; “most expensive jewel of 2023” is time-limited. Neither alone establishes the current all-time record.
