The ranking language should stay attached to its category. Guinness’s jacket record concerns an auction sale, while its denim record is a separate second-hand clothing milestone. Neither establishes a comprehensive ordering across every type of jacket and every sale channel.
Why the “Thriller” jacket sold for a record price
The 2011 sale concerned a particular screen-worn artifact, not simply a jacket design available at retail. Julien’s describes it as black-and-red calf leather with winged shoulders and a “Marc Laurent Paris” label. The auction house says it was one of two jackets Jackson wore while filming the video, was designed by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, and was later given by Jackson to longtime costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. Julien’s also describes the sleeve as signed and the interior as inscribed. The auction house says the design “sparked a 1980s fashion craze.” Copies and fan versions helped make the look recognizable, but a replica is not the historical video-worn garment and does not carry its documented provenance.

On October 7, 2026, Julien’s Auctions announced that a “Thriller” music-video jacket was scheduled for auction on December 7, 2026. As of October 8, 2026, that sale had not taken place, so there is no result to report. The announcement alone does not establish that the upcoming lot is the same physical jacket sold in 2011; that would require confirmation in the lot documentation. - Keep the source’s currency and wording. The Guinness and Julien’s “Thriller” figures are both published results, but they differ slightly and Julien’s identifies fees separately.
