Was Lady Gaga’s meat dress really sold as a Halloween costume?
CBS New York reported that Old Homestead Steakhouse offered the $100,000 meat costume in October 2010. The report establishes the offer and its materials, not that anyone bought it. The steakhouse’s co-owner Marc Sherry described the promotion as, “We are ‘meating’ a demand for the most sought after costume of Halloween 2010,” as quoted by CBS.
Are movie costumes part of the same record?
No. A movie costume’s production cost is a different category from a Halloween costume’s retail price, listing, or custom commission. Guinness World Records identifies Edith Head’s fur-trimmed sequined showgirl ensemble for Ginger Rogers in Lady in the Dark (1944)—a mink bolero, bodysuit, and overskirt—as the most credible candidate for the most costly movie costume. Guinness cautions: “Hollywood studios are famously secretive about the accounting of production costs, which makes it difficult to know the identity of the holder for this title with certainty.” That uncertainty concerns film production accounting, not Halloween costume sales (Guinness World Records, “Most costly movie costume”).

Seasonal product prices can also be mistaken for costume prices. TIME cited a $299 Home Depot 12-foot skeleton and a $180 Target jack-o’-lantern in 2023 as examples of costly Halloween merchandise; both are decorations, not costumes (TIME, 2023).
